- "Red Five standing by."
- ―Luke Skywalker
Red Five was the callsign for the fifth member of Red Squadron.
History
Red Five became a famous callsign under its usage by Luke Skywalker (pictured).
- "Stay close, Red Five! Where are you going?"
"This is Red Five! I need help!" - ―Red Leader Garven Dreis to Red Five Pedrin Gaul during the Battle of Scarif
The callsign was used by Pedrin Gaul of the Massassi Group during the battle over Scarif; however, Gaul was killed in the battle, leaving the position vacant.[3] It was later taken up by Luke Skywalker when he joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic shortly before the Battle of Yavin,[1] and he would use this callsign in that battle as well as in several subsequent missions.[4]
After Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star, the callsign became synonymous with the actual X-wing fighter he flew.[5] Red Five remained famous as Skywalker's call sign[6] but would see use by other pilots, such as Grizz Frix, who used the callsign during the Battle of Endor.[7] Rey utilized the old Red Five callsign by taking control of Skywalker's old X-wing ahead of the Battle of Exegol.[6]
