- "We have no credit shipment. This is a bulk freighter!"
"If this is a bulk freighter, why is your vault magnetically sealed?"
"We are protected by New Republic decree. I hereby demand all pirate scum leave this vessel immediately!" - ―A bulk freighter captain and the pirate captain "Silvo"
The bulk freighter Eravana
Bulk freighters[2] also known as heavy freighters,[3] were generally very large, slow, and cumbersome space-faring freighters whose role was to move essential supplies throughout the galaxy every day. They were built in orbital shipyards and rarely entered the atmosphere of a planetary body. Instead they tended to unload or load their cargo via space stations and transfer yards. Most freighters of this type were owned and operated by corporations as they were generally very expensive and difficult to maintain. Exceptions like the Eravana—Han Solo and Chewbacca's Baleen-class heavy freighter[2]—and the Yadeez—a carrier for the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing[4]—did, however, exist.[2]
History
The Galactic Empire often used Class four container transports.[5] One Corellian bulk freighter was being scrapped on the planet Ferrix[6] in 5 BBY.[7] Yadeez was a bulk freighter that served as a carrier vessel for the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing.[4]
A bulk freighter was attacked by Silvo's pirates in the hope of plundering its vault for a large sum of credits. Upon fighting past its crew and breaching the vault, however, the pirates discovered a single credit and mutinied against "Silvo" for his failures,[1] resulting in Brutus[8]—Silvo's former First Mate[9]—being installed as leader instead.[8] One heavy freighter was used to destroy a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer with the Holdo maneuver above the Forest Moon of Endor[3] in 35 ABY.[10]
