Plot summary
Yoda's distress signal
The Jedi younglings Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay and Nubs travel with the pilot Nash Durango and her droid RJ-83 aboard the Crimson Firehawk through an asteroid field to watch a pod of purrgil. Brightstar says that Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna will be happy that they found them. Solay activates a sonar recorder which allows them to record the songs generated by the purrgil. While recording the purrgil's songs, they hear a distress signal from someone asking for help. Durango recognizes it as a distress signal and plays back the recording.
Over the intercom, they hear Master Yoda telling the listener that his starship has crashed and that he needs help before the transmission jams. Solay recognizes the voice as belonging to Master Yoda. When Brightstar expresses surprise that the "greatest Jedi" would need help, Solay replies that everyone sometimes need help and Nubs agrees. Durango tracks the transmission to a nearby moon called Vrant Tarnum, which she describes as rough place covered by empty deserts, strong winds and rough volcanoes. Nubs is fearful but Solay and Brightstar are determined to help Yoda.
The volcanic world
The Firehawk descends into the planet Vrant Tarnum. Durango tracks Yoda's signal to the top of a volcano. Brightstar wonders what he is doing at the top of the volcano. The ship's proximity alarms ring as strong wings buffet the Firehawk. The younglings exit the starship and find the planet covered in volcanic smoke. Solay also spots several holes in the rock created by lava beetles. Nubs asks what they are. Solay explains that these beetles live near the volcano and eat rocks with minerals inside. She adds that they have been known to eat the hulls of starship. Brightstar tasks Durango and RJ-83 with keeping the Firehawk safe. Durango and RJ express agreement.
The Jedi younglings set out to find Master Yoda. Approaching the volcano, they sense the tremor of a groundquake. Continuing farther, they find their path block by a river of lava. The younglings use their Force powers to create an improvised bridge by levitating boulders across the lava river. Together, they run across the bridge. Several lava beetles fly away from a nearby rock and converge on the Firehawk.
The Jedi younglings pick up Yoda's signal. Amidst a second groundquake, they find Yoda operating a transmitter. Yoda is delighted that they found him and reveals that he has injured his foot during the crash. Yoda says that his foot will heal but it will be difficult to walk. The Jedi younglings offer to bandage him while Nubs helps him to his feet. While Nubs bandages Yoda's foot, Brightstar expresses surprise that a Jedi Master would need help. Yoda explains that everyone including Jedi Masters sometimes need help and thanks the three of them for coming to his aid.
Escaping the beetles and lava
Yoda believes he can make it down the mountain. Just then, the volcano rumbles, signaling a flow of lava approaching. Via holoprojector, Durango tells her friends that the Firehawk is surrounded by lava beetles. One of the beetles has damaged a thruster relay, preventing them from taking off until she can fix it. Durango tells them that she and RJ-83 are overwhelmed. The four Jedi head back to the starship to aid Durango. Solay is initially amazed by the large size of the lava beetles, saying that they are larger than those she has read in her Galactic Creature Guide. At Brightstar's prompting, Solay remembers her mission.
Durango is relieved to see Master Yoda and her Jedi friends. Yoda greets Durango and RJ. Yoda uses the Force to levitate the lava beetles, temporarily driving them away. However, they start to return as Durango beings to repair the thruster relay. Brightstar proposes that the Jedi keep the beetles off the ship while Durango completes the repairs. The Jedi younglings and Yoda work together to repel the vehicles. Just then, the volcano erupts, sending a river of lava towards the ship. Brightstar panics and asks Durango about the repairs. Durango says she is almost ready and sends RJ-83 into the ship to prepare to depart.
Yoda tells Brightstar and the others to stay aboard the ship. He approaches the lava river and uses the Force to temporarily hold back the flow of lava. However, the exertion of his Force powers strains his wounded foot. Yoda calls for help and Brightstar comes to his aid. Working together, the Master and Initiate use their Force powers to push back the flow of lava. After Durango repairs the thruster relay, she tells RJ-83 to fire up the ship's engines. Brightstar grabs Yoda's hand and pulls him aboard the Firehawk's gangplank. They escape moments before the ground around them is submerged in lava.
Aftermath
Once aboard the Firehawk, Brightstar asks Yoda what he was doing on Vrant Tarnum. Yoda explains that he was on a mission but that must continue. Yoda asks what they were doing here. Brightstar explains that Master Zia had sent them on a mission to record purrgil songs. Solay leads them to the bridge where a pod of purrgil have converged. Solay plays a recording of their songs. Yoda thanks the Jedi younglings for help. Brightstar says that it is good to know that even great Jedi Masters need help sometimes. Yoda expresses agreement.
Continuity
This episode occurs after the events of the IDW comic The High Republic Adventures (2021) 5, which was released on June 16, 2021. In that story, Master Yoda was traveling with the Elder Tromak to obtain half of the Rod of Seasons from the Kharvashark Ruins on the volcanic moon of Vran Tarnum. However, their ship was shot down by Nihil security drones, allowing the Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro and his protege Krix Kamerat to obtain the artifact first, which they intended to use to harness the Force-devouring Nameless creatures as a weapon against the Jedi Order.[4]
