Biography
Training on Coruscant
- "You don't need to do everything alone, Kai, that's what friends are for."
- ―Lys Solay to Kai Brightstar
The Force-sensitive Pantoran, Lys Solay, was born on the moon of Pantora during the High Republic Era.[1] As a child, she was brought into the Jedi Order and lived at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Here, she became good friends with two other young Jedi: the human boy, Kai Brightstar, and the Pooba boy, Nubs. The trio would frequently train together and attempt to beat their previous training course record.[8]
Around 233 BBY,[9] Lys Solay was stationed on Tenoo by Grand Master Yoda. However, as Zia Zaldor Zanna checked over the list of younglings to be transported to Tenoo, she noticed that Solay, along with Brightstar and Nubs, were missing. The trio had snuck off to the training facilities and were facing off against several training remotes. Solay tried to distract the remotes, leaving Brightstar and Nubs to attempt to grab the beacon. When this failed, Brightstar tried to reach the beacon alone; however, Brightstar tripped over a ledge. Solay quickly rushed over and helped him up, reminding him that he didn't need to do everything alone. Brightstar agreed, and the trio took the beacon together, finishing the course in record time. Solay and Brightstar were then picked up in a hug by Nubs.[8]
Just as the celebration ended, the trio received an urgent holomessage from Jedi Master Zanna telling them to hurry as the shuttles to Tenoo were leaving. She informed them that they would be on the last shuttle and she would meet them on Tenoo. Solay rushed out the door to the hangar, where she greeted Nash Durango and RJ-83. She was shocked to discover that Durango was the pilot of the Crimson Firehawk, as she was just a kid, but quickly adjusted to the situation and shook hands with the other girl. Solay then boarded the ship.[8]
On board the shuttle, Solay met Giggs, a Gedonian ground weevil that Durango was transporting to an animal preserve on Tenoo. She was excited by the presence of the creature and quickly rushed over to pet him, while Brightstar told Durango about Solay's affinity for creatures.[8]
Defending the Hap Sap Tap
Just as the Firehawk jumped out of hyperspace, Durango received a holomessage from Hap. He informed her that the pirates he had told her about had returned and that he had heard that she was transporting Jedi. Solay and her friends promised to take care of the pirates. Once the ship had landed, the younglings rushed to Hap's Sap Tap and confronted Taborr Val Dorn. Solay easily stopped EB-3 by throwing a table at the droid's legs. Val Dorn, who had been dueling Brightstar, used a repulsor blast to break off several tree branches directly above the cafe. Solay quickly rushed to Brightstar's aid when he asked for help to keep the branches from destroying the cafe. As the Jedi moved the branches, Taborr's gang was able to run off with their hovercart of stolen goods. Durango was able to stall the pirates just long enough for Solay, Brightstar, and Nubs to catch up, and the trio was able to return the stolen goods. Durango then escorted the Jedi younglings to the Tenoo Jedi Temple with Master Zanna complimenting the trio for defending the cafe.[8]
Personality and traits
- "I like your purple hair."
- ―Sep, to Lys Solay
Solay was a female Pantoran with blue skin and blue eyes. She also had facial tattoos, which represented her Pantoran heritage.[4] Her hair was purple.[10] Solay was Force-sensitive and had a special connection with animals particularly the wildlife of Tenoo.[4]
Solay was a hardworking student who was eager to learn the ways of the Force. Though Solay was usually willing to follow the rules, she was also eager to support her fellow younglings if they got into trouble.[4] She was known for her incredible patience, especially with creatures and fellow younglings.[11]
Behind the scenes
- "She's super smart. She's quick-witted. She's super acrobatic, and she always lands on two feet. She's super observant. And I love how she puts people and creatures before herself and is always willing to help out."
- ―Lys Solay's voice actor Juliet Donenfeld describing her character
Lys Solay is a character that was developed for the Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures television series where Solay is voiced by Juliet Donenfeld.[13] Donenfeld auditioned for the role of Solay during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to lockdown conditions, she used her father's closet as an improvised recording studio. Donenfeld likened her character Solay's appearance and personality to General Leia Organa, noting that Solay's two space buns were patterned after Organa's hairstyle and that Solay shared Organa's willingness to help others.[12]
Donenfeld also said that she and other young viewers could relate to Solay's love for animals. Donenfeld and co-star Jamaal Avery Jr., who voiced Kai Brightstar, said that the dynamic between the three main characters Brightstar, Solay and Nubs were meant to teach children the importance of teamwork, friendship, and resolving differences. Avery Jr said that Solay's role in the series was to remind Brightstar that it was alright to accept help from others.[12]
During a video interview with Star Wars Explained host Alex Damon, Michael Olson revealed that Lys Solay's traits were based on his daughter.[14]
