Plot summary
The escaped critter
Jedi younglings Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay and Nubs are walking through Kublop Springs's waterfront when a rat-like creature escapes and scurries their way. The three children corner and trap the creature under a stall, with Solay calming it down and telling it they don't mean any harm. Shortly later, they are joined by the bounty hunter Ansen Strung, who tells them he is looking for a faloen hopper. Speaking in Poobian, Nubs points the way to the stall. Strung tells the younglings to lift the stall at his signal so that he can funnel the creature into a carriage cage.
Strung uses a smoke bomb to force the faloen hopper out of the stall while the Jedi younglings use the Force to levitate the box. They then guide the critter into its carrier cage. Via comlink, Strung tells Weebo that he has found his lost pet rodent and will return it to the farm. The Jedi younglings think that the faloen hopper is cute.
An unexpected reunion
The group are joined by Rhugo Tar, one of Strung's former bounty hunting associates. Strung introduces Tar to the younglings, who reciprocate. Tar tells Strung and the younglings that he has been searching for a starship thief named Sty Trune, who had escaped Tar following a fight. Tar has brought his ship to Kublop Springs for repairs but thinks that it will take a while. Tar asks Strung if he could borrow his starship and says that he has placed a tracker on Trune's ship. Tar invites Strung to help him catch the fugitive, suggesting it is preferable to tracking creatures. Strung and the younglings defend Strung's tracking skills.
Strung takes up Tar's challenge and agrees to help Tar capture Sty to prove that he has not gone soft. The Jedi younglings volunteer to help. After returning the faloen hopper to Weebo and his grandson, the group depart on Ansen's ship for the forested world of Aludia. Strung parks his wedge-shaped starship near a crashed starship. Solay and Strung look forward to meeting the wildlife but Tar reminds Strung of their mission. Tar explains that Trune had crashed his starship before fleeing into the while.
Strung sniffs around and decides to search for footprints. Disagreeing with Strung's methods, Tar activates his rocket boots and deciders to search from the sky. Strung and the Jedi younglings continue searching for footprints. After sneezing due to pollen, Nubs finds a trail of footprints. Tar mocks their methods, prompting an argument between him and Strung, with Strung likening Tar to a lost tooka. Brightstar and Solay calm the situation and remind them of their mission.
Capturing the starship thief
Continuing their search, they find Sty Trune trapped in a rope trap on a vine. Strung is unwilling to spook Trune but Tar decides to confront him head on. Tar confronts Trune, who mocks the time it took to find him. When Tar remarks that he is in a "bind," Trune explains that he climbed a tree to get a better view of the land and encountered a little accident. Tar prepares to apply magnetic binders on Trune. However, he is distracted by Strung, which allows Trune the opportunity to break free with his knife and run. He is cornered by the Jedi younglings and surrenders.
Taking this as a victory, Strung says the successful capture of Trune proves that his "animal tracking" method works. This sparks an argument with Tar, who disparages Strung's methods work. Trune claims there is an Aludian trumble pig nearby, which distracts Strung and the younglings long enough for him to flee. Tar is furious and regrets bringing Strung and the younglings. Brightstar tells them to stop arguing and focus on capturing the thief.
Trune runs towards Strung's starship. Working together, Nubs gives Brightstar a lift, allowing him to do a Force jump and leap over Trune. Brightstar and his friends attempt to block him but Strung and Tar argue about methods. Following a tussle, Strung accidentally fires his energy net gun while Tar fires his rope gun. However, this traps the Jedi younglings, which allows Trune to flee aboard Strung's starship. While the bounty hunters argue, Trune struggles with the custom controls but accidentally activates the disco player. Brightstar, Solay and Nubs tell the bounty hunters that they need to work together.
The two bounty hunters decide to put aside their differences. After freeing the children, they don their rocket boots as Strung's ship rises. Strung tells Tar to use his grappling cable to pull out an essential panel, which prevents the ship from taking off. With Tar's approval, Strung uses a smoke bomb to disorientate Trune while the Jedi younglings block his exit at the ramp. The three younglings work with the bounty hunters to corner the starship thief. Out of respect for Strung, Tar allows him to arrest Trune.
A renewed partnership
Later, Tar brings Trune's stolen ship to a repair and prepares to depart with the fugitive in tow. He thanks Strung and praises his creature tracking skills. He invites Strung to help him hunt other thieves. In return, Strung invites Tar to help with future hunting expeditions. Tar waves goodbye to Strung and the younglings, who watch as his ship departs Kublop Springs.
