Plot summary
The Jedi Initiates Nubs, Kai Brightstar and Lys Solay arrive for a Jedi Vector flying lesson on the grounds of the Tenoo Jedi Temple. Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna introduces her new Padawan Wes Vinik, who will be leading the flying lesson. Brightstar is excited since he regards Vinik as a skilled pilot. Vinik introduces himself, saying that the important lesson will be completion no matter how difficult the course. The training course involves flying through three sky rings above the Tenoo tree forest.
Vinik gives a test flight aboard his Jedi Vector which involves flying over the river and the forest. Before Brightstar flies his Vector, Vinik reminds him and the other younglings that the important lesson is finishing the course. An over-confident Brightstar flies his Vector too close to the first sky ring, causing a collision. When the alarm rings, Brightstar considers restarting the course but Vinik tells him to continue.
Brightstar ignores Vinik and restarts the course. He flies through the first sky ring without incident but flies too closely to a giant Tenoo tree. His Jedi Vector's canopy is covered in leaves, which limit his vision. His starfighter is hit by a waterspout from the river, damaging the engines. Brightstar flies back to the launch pad When he remarks that Vinik made it look easy, Vinik explains that he is not perfect and scuffed one of his Vector's wings while setting up the course yesterday.
Brightstar is surprised to learn that Vinik also makes mistakes. Vinik reassures him that he has made numerous mistakes but keeps trying. He encourages Brightstar by inviting him to do the course together. The two fly their Vectors through the rings, bypassing waterspouts. The two return back to the launch pad. Brightstar is excited and wants to do the course again. Vinik invites him to lead Solay and Nubs through the obstacle course. The three younglings fly their Vectors into the rings.
