Plot summary

The droid workshop

The Jedi younglings Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay and Nubs sit around a table at Dotti's Droid Workshop. Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna had sent them there to learn about taking care of droids. Solay is having fun but Brighstar is struggling with toggling a part. He enlists Nubs's help but the two accidentally break the object. Nubs falls backward and a female droid named Dotti helps him to his feet, explaining that repairing and building droids can be challenging.

Dotti then shifts the lesson towards "droid care" and explains that her workshop serves to care for and repair droids. She introduces them to a yellow cylindrical droid with two legs called JN-47, whose vocabulator has been damaged beyond repair. Dotti explains she has found a vocabulator that would fit JN-47 and begins explaining. Unknown to the four, they are being watched by two spider droids, who are hanging from the ceiling.

The vocabulator heist

Spotting the vocabulator, they ride a conveyer belt and jump onto the bench. One of the droids grabs the vocabulator and climb up a wall. Dotti explains the procedure to JN-47 before proceeding to commence the operation. However, she discovers the vocabulator is missing. Solay spots the two thieving spider droids, with one carrying the vocabulator. Brightstar leads the younglings after the thieves while Dotti reassures JN-47.

The Jedi younglings pursue the spider droids through the streets of Kublop Springs, with Brightstar using his Force powers to jump over roofs. Solay pursues the droids on the grounds and uses a Grappling hook to jump onto a wooden balcony. The droid jumps and Nubs continues the pursuit. Before he can grab the spider droid, a second spider droid jumps on him and tickles his belly. The two spider droids retreat to Hap's Sap Tap.

Inside the restaurant, Hap is stacking several cups while a band of alien musicians is playing. One of the spider droids causes the cups to topple. When the Jedi spot them, they jump onto the stage and knock over the stands before leaping onto separate tables. One of the droids squares some juice into Hap's face. After evading Nubs, the droids flee the restaurant. When Hap asks what is going on, Solay explains that the spider droids stole something from Dotti's workshop. A Rodian customer suggests that the Jedi follow the trail of purple juicy footprints that the spider droids left behind. Hap says he and his customers will clean the store.

New droid friends

Following the trail of purple footprints, the Jedi younglings discover a large starship parked at the edge of the forest. They see a green and white astromech droid named Dozer and a yellow and white astromech droid named Gigi remonstrating with a tall armored security droid. They tell the droid that they do not want to help Rek Minuu because they have learnt that he steals things. Before the security droid can rough up the two smaller droids, Solay and Brightstar confront the security droid and tell him to stop bullying the smaller droids.

The security droid orders them to leave before attacking them with two electrobatons. The Jedi block his attack with their training lightsabers. Dozer and Gigi decide to help the Jedi younglings. Dozer bumps into the security droid, knocking him face first into the ground. Gigi's drone detaches from his head and then switches off the security droid's rear power button. Dozer and Gigi introduce themselves to the Jedi younglings, who return the favor.

Solay explains that they are looking for two spider droids who stole a vocabulator from Dotti. Dozer explains that Rek built and owns the spider droids. When Solay asks if he built them as well, Dozer explains that Rek only upgraded Dozer and Gigi, explaining that he made Dozer strong and gave Gigi a flying drone. Dozer explains that he and Gigi learnt that Minuu has been stealing, which they regard as morally wrong. Dozer says that Rek has been wanting to upgrade their friend Beepers. Solay deduces that this is why Minuu stole the vocabulator.

The unscrupulous droid-builder

The Jedi and two astromechs agree to confront Rek about his delinquent behaviour. The two astromechs lead the Jedi into Minuu's large workshop where they find a green, orange and white astromech droid named Beepers. Gigi's drone powers on the hibernating Beepers while the Jedi locate the stolen vocabulator. Brightstar introduces himself and his friends to Beepers and promises to get him out. Before they can leave, they are confronted by Rek Minuu himself, who emerges from a ceiling hatch with the two spider droids.

He asks Dozer and Gigi why they are not doing their chores. Dozer tells Rek that he and his droid friends are leaving because they have learnt that Rek is a thief. Rek descends down a pole and attempts to convince Dozer and Gigi to stay by saying that he gives them upgrades that makes them better. Brightstar confronts Minuu over the stolen vocabulator. Rek replies that he needs it and claims to be the greatest droid-builder in the galaxy. He says that he will do what it takes to get what he wants.

When Solay counters that he stealing, Minuu counters that it is for a good cause and asks if Beepers agree. Beeper voices his concerns in Binary, with his voice echoing due to his faulty vocabulator. Rek is sad that Beeper does not approve of his actions and permits him to leave. However, he insists on keeping the stolen vocabulator and flicks his finger, activating two stationary blue security droids who are armed with electro baton s. He orders his security droids to keep the vocabulator safe and to expel the intruders. The spider droids join in.

Brightstar tasks Nubs with retrieving the vocabulator while he and Solay duel with the security droids. When a security droid corners Nubs, Dozer knocks a stack of boxes into the droid. Dozer compliments Nubs, saying they make a great team. Rek grumbles while Gigi's drone lures the spider droid inside a safe and locks it there. Solay cheers on the others but Brightstar is still preoccupied with the towering security droid. Beepers activates his rocket booster and flies onto the security droid. He slams the security droid to the ground, allowing Brightstar to switch off its power button.

Rek surmises that his droid friends were not as strong as he thought and suggests they need new upgrades. Brightstar tells Rek that they are leaving with the stolen part. Rek allows them to leave but reminds the three astromech droids Gigi, Beeper and Dozer that he made them better. Rek and the remaining spider droid head down to make repairs and upgrades on the damaged droids below.

A new home and family

Back at Dotti's workshop, Dotti thanks the Jedi younglings for retrieving JN-47's vocabulator and installs it into the droid. The droid begins chirping happily in Binary. Dotti then turns her attention to Beepers' damaged vocabulator, commenting that the droid's parts date back to the Old Republic. She operates on Beepers' vocabulator and restores it to an operational state. While the droid beeps in delight, Dotti welcomes Dozer, Gigi and Beepers to live and work at her workshop.

Recognizing the droids as special, she assigns them as companions to the Jedi younglings. Nubs is lauded with Dozer, Beepers with Brightstar and Solay with Gigi. She assigns the three tounglings with giving them a "tune-up", using the lessons they have learned at her workshop.
