Plot summary

Meeting Diggles

Lys Solay accompanied SF-R3 ("Aree") and CAM on a creature safari on Aludia. Solay chatted with her friends Kai Brightstar and Nubs via holoprojector. They wished her all the best and hoped to see her after the safari. After sensing movement in a nearby bush, Solay bids her friends farewell and switched off the holoprojector.

A lizard-like creature emerged from the bush. After CAM consulted her database and found no record of the creature on their databanks. Solay said that they were here to find undiscovered animals and thought the creature was just a baby. Before Aree could catalog the creature, a large bird circled the baby lizard. Solay grabbed the lizard in her arms and used her lightsaber to drive off the creature. After several attempts, the bird flew away.

Solay suggested that the group try and find the creature's nest or burrow. Aree suggested that a nearby mud puddle could be his home. Solay responded that the creature liked to play in the mud but that she didn't think that the mud puddle was its home. Noticing that the lizard liked digging, Solay named him "Diggles." Solay wondered where Diggles' family was. Aree said that many creatures left their nest when they grew up and speculated that this may have been Diggles' first day out of the nest.

Searching for Diggles' family

Solay thought that Diggles must be lost. Aree wanted to catalog the creature but Solay insisted on getting the creature home. She said that a Jedi would always get a creature back to their home, whether big or small. Aree was reluctant but agreed to a short walk. After a period of searching, they were still unable to find Diggles' home. Solay thought that Diggles must live in a nearby creek since he had scales and tiny legs.

After seeing Diggles rummaging through several nearby root vegetables, Solay wanted to feed him. Aree opined that it was better to observe the creature's eating habits. Diggles took a liking to Solay. When Solay asked what happened if they couldn't find Diggles' family, Aree admitted that he didn't know but agreed to keep looking. Solay suggested searching the other side of the creek. Aree and Solay jumped across giant rocks while CAM flew over the rocks.

While crossing, Solay tripped and dropped Diggles onto some spiky fruits. Diggles scurried under a nearby bush made from leaves. Diggles was troubled by the spiky fruits but Solay managed to remove them. If they could not find Diggles' home, Solay suggested bringing him back to Tenoo. Aree was reluctant to take a wild animal from their natural habitat. Solay understood but said that Diggles was a baby and offered to serve as a surrogate mother.

Diggles' mother

Their presence attracted the attention of a large lizard-like creature which was covered in leaves. Thinking the creature was hostile, Solay and the droids fled with Diggles. The creature chased them through the forest and Aree got stuck in the mud. As the large reptilian creature approached Aree, CAM distracted it while Solay used the Force to free Aree from the mud. The creature cornered Solay and the droids at the edge of a waterfall.

The creature used its large tail to swing mud at the offworlders. Solay used her lightsaber to deflect the mud. Aree and CAM managed to trap the creature's tail under a tree trunk. They managed to flee back aboard Aree's ship. Once inside, Solay attempted to comfort Diggles but he wiggled away from her and burrowed at the door. She realized that the creature wanted to go back outside.

The large lizard creature broke free of the log and climbed on top of Aree's ship, preventing them from taking off. The group retreated to the cockpit where Diggles was still trying to break out. Watching a sad Diggles reaching out to the large lizard creature outside, Solay realized that the large creature was Diggles' mother. Aree agreed and said that some creatures looked different from their babies. Solay realized that Diggles wanted to get back with her family. Aree told Solay that they needed to do the right thing even if it meant approaching the large unknown creature outside.

Doing the right thing

Solay agreed to do the right thing and returned Diggles to his mother. Diggles was soon joined by several of his siblings, who had been nesting under the leaves on their mother's hide. Solay and Aree were fascinated with the new reptilian creatures they had encountered. Aree tasked CAM with recording the reptiles for the Galactic Creature Guide. The mother allowed CAM to film them. Solay was sad that she did not get to bring Diggles home but Aree reassured her that doing the right thing could be hard sometimes and that he was proud of her.

Before leaving, Diggles went up to Solay and bid her farewell. Diggles' mother allowed Solay to bring Diggles to her. Diggles climbed on top of his mother’s head. Back at the Tenoo Jedi Temple, Solay delivered a hologram presentation to Brightstar and Nubs and explained that Aree had named the species Mardorsh. She also showed them a picture of Diggles and his siblings. When Brightstar said that she helped Diggles, she replied that they had helped each other.
