The peasant dress disguise, also known as the Tatooine Disguise for the context of its use on the planet Tatooine, was worn by Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo while posing as one of her own handmaidens on Tatooine during the Invasion of Naboo. It was a plain, multilayered outfit with a sleeveless gray tunic, long-sleeved blue blouse, black pants, and gray shoes.

Description

The peasant dress disguise[2] was a multilayered outfit that was part of Padme Amidala's wardrobe when she was the Queen of Naboo. It included a sleeveless gray tunic worn over a blue blouse with long sleeves, both loosely fitted and made of heavily textured fabric. The top layers were cinched at the waist with a blue belt and at her wrists with gray fabric wrappings. Black pants and gray shoes completed the ensemble.[1]

History

When Amidala and her entourage were forced to flee in her J-type 327 Nubian starship from the Trade Federation's invasion of their homeworld[1] in 32 BBY,[3] the peasant dress was in the starship's wardrobe. Temporarily stranded on Tatooine, Amidala maintained her persona as one of her own handmaidens and pretended that "the Queen" wished for her to accompany Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, and astromech droid R2-D2 as they sought hyperdrive parts in Mos Espa. To further the ruse,[1] two of her actual handmaidens, Eirtaé and Rabé, assisted her in changing into the peasant dress disguise; it was the plainest outfit available. Due to running out of time, many of her hair braids were worn down instead of pinned up[4] with those that encircled her head. Amidala wore[1] the Tatooine Disguise[5] for the duration of the unplanned visit.[1]

Behind the scenes

The peasant dress disguise was created for the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.[1] It was conceptualized by artist Iain McCaig and realized by costume designer Trisha Biggar and her department.[6] The outfit appeared on John Tyler Christopher's variant cover of Star Wars (2020) 44, where it was identified as the "Tatooine Disguise."[5]
