- "We travel the galaxy far and wide,
To explore creatures wherever they hide.
With wilderness preservation top of mind,
We never disturb a habitat of any kind.
We care for species whether friend or foe,
And represent the Society wherever we go." - ―The society's creed
The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts (GSCE),[3] was an organization dedicated to studying and answering questions about the large variety of species that inhabited the galaxy. Originally founded during the High Republic Era to catalogue new creatures discovered on the Galactic Frontier, the Society expanded over the centuries to also promote conservation and wilderness preservation as core tenets. The group produced educational programming distributed across the HoloNet and maintained a monthly newsletter that was approaching nearly 5000 issues[1] around the time of the First Order-Resistance War.[4]
History
In order to properly document wildlife in dangerous environments, the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts commissioned the creation of Safari droids from Serv-O-Droid, Inc. These droids were programmed to autonomously explore the galaxy, observe creatures in their native habitats, and report the collected information back to the Society.[1]
High Republic Era
The Coronet City Chapter of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts was stationed in Coronet City on the planet Corellia and was led by Chief Inspector Deemus Abrus. They worked with local government to help make sure that certain creatures weren't sold on the black market.[5] In 230 BBY,[6] they stopped the Shani singer Crufeela from eating the Bonbrak Teetak, with Abrus suggesting that they bring the Bronbrak to the Blue Peaks of the planet in order to repopulate the area.[2]
Post-New Republic era
Rey and Chewbacca learn of a rathtar on the loose on a GSCE ship
One such example of these Safari droids was SF-R3, who traveled[7] during or after 34 ABY[8] alongside another droid[7] known as CAM.[1] Another example of these Safari droids was M1-RE, also known as Miree, who was a specialized member of the Society. She was stationed on the Youngling Care Space Station where she cared for several species of younglings,[9] and she was recorded by the cam droid CAM-E.[10]
Sometime after 34 ABY,[11] Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts members flew to Batuu on a starship that held several creatures, including a porg named Penelope, a dokma named Luna, a worrt, a Kowakian monkey-lizard, a dianoga, and a kouhun, all in the cargo bay. Other areas of the cargo hold below contained larger, more dangerous creatures such as a wampa and a rathtar.[12]
While handling the kouhun, GSCE member Quinn was bitten on the arm. Resistance operatives Rey and Chewbacca, who were secret stowaways on the ship en route to Batuu, arrived in time with medical supplies to save the handler. After some time, when droid BL-R4 went inside the rathtar enclosure to feed it, the creature managed to escape and was set loose on the ship. Rey and Chewbacca successfully teamed up with Quinn and other crewmembers, some of whom were Force-sensitive, to monitor the ship's cameras from the cargo bay in search of the rathtar, and to use the Force to lock down doors and corral the creature back into its cage.[12]
Behind the scenes
- "I've always been fascinated with those 'Adventure Clubs' that were around at the turn of the 20th century, like the Adventure's Club of New York. In my head, it's a bunch of Indiana Jones-types getting together to swap stories (but they probably weren't as cool as that). When we decided that we wanted Aree to be part of a group that researched creatures, the Adventure's Club concept came immediately to mind. So, we sort of took elements of that and elements of things like the National Geographic Society and created the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts."
- ―Matt Martin
The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts was created for Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures, an animated webseries that debuted on StarWarsKids.com on October 14, 2021, and aired until November 18, 2021.[7] When the idea came up that main character of the show Aree, was part of a research group, Lucasfilm Story Group's Matt Martin was inspired by the Adventurers' Club of New York and thus the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts was created.[13]
Lucasfilm created the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts Activity Book for families to complete as they watch the series. The sheet was released in an article announcing the series that was released on StarWars.com on October 14, 2021.[7] After completing the activity sheet, viewers can sign their name on a certificate, which certifies that they were elected as an honorary member of the Society and they are given the fellowship and privileges of membership.[1]

Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures — "Porgs" features porgs on Batuu, a species that Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge establishes were not present on the planet Batuu until the Resistance brought them there between the events of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Therefore, porgs must have been introduced to Batuu between those stories, which corresponds to 34 ABY per Star Wars: Timelines, meaning that the events of Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures take place during or after 34 ABY.
