- "We just need someone with a datapad and binoculars."
- ―Leia Organa, to Luke Skywalker
A datapad,[1] also known as a tablet,[4] was a small electronic device used for inputting, storing, and displaying information.[1]
Datapads have a datascreen[5] that displayed common data for its users, such as displaying a cargo manifest for an inspection crew during a ship inspection.[6]
Additionally, some datapads came with a built-in locator[7] and a scanner.[8] A training datapad was a type of datapad used for training by aspiring cadets of the Imperial Academy.[9] The datapads, such as those used by the Advanced Science Division of the Galactic Empire also held access codes, and were used as keys to open locked doors inside secured facilities.[10]
Datapads could be used by a technically proficient user to slice and gain access to other secured devices[11]. They could also act as a holodiary. [12] Some datapads also had a built-in holoprojector that could project holographic images, such as an identification hologram of a bounty target. [13] In emergency situations, some include a built-in distress beacon that sends a distress signal,[14] or secure transceivers to transmit/receive secured information like encrypted coordinates[15]
At least some datapads had reflective screen surfaces. Merei Spanjaf once saw a dim reflection of herself when staring at her datapad in consternation.[16]
