Plot summary
Doctor Aphra awakens on the floor of an airlock, the effects of a neurotoxin wearing off. Her captors, the pilot Kharrek and the sniper Just Lucky, inform her that she is in Tagge Space and will soon meet Domina Tagge.
Before: Aboard her flagship, the Acquisitor, Lady Domina Tagge directs her corporate empire, ordering armed strikes against rival syndicates. Nearby lies the shrouded corpse of her nephew, Ronen, a subject she refuses to discuss. Her final command is for a new bounty to be issued. Elsewhere, the details of this 20,000-credit bounty for Aphra and her crew are received by a bounty broadcaster, who disseminates the information across the galaxy.
Almost Now: On Arveesh Station, Aphra is ambushed by mercenaries. The Wookiee gladiator Black Krrsantan violently intervenes, creating chaos that allows Aphra to escape. She hotwires a speeder bike, but a group of bounty hunters gives chase. After Aphra sabotages their bikes, her own is disabled by a sniper shot from Lucky. The mysterious hunter Kharrek then incapacitates her with a neurotoxin dart.
Present: Aphra is brought before Lady Domina. After a tense exchange, Aphra attempts a daring escape by grabbing Kharrek’s blaster, but Domina reveals the room is protected by a ray shield that would deflect any shot back at Aphra. When Aphra finds her breathing restricted by the shield, Domina states, "Ronen's mistake was underestimating you. Yours was underestimating me."
Domina then reveals her true intention: the capture wasn't for revenge, but a "job interview." She hires Aphra to investigate a rival, Beol De'Rruyet, who claims to have replicated an ancient and incredibly fast Nihil path engine. This technology threatens to ruin the Tagge Corporation, and Domina wants Aphra to discover if it truly works before its public unveiling.
Aphra agrees, on the condition that she can choose her partner—a professional she can trust. The scene shifts to Corellia, where Sana Starros is seen exiting the Volt Cobra.
