Plot summary
Jedi Padawan Sav Malagán is aboard the Grim Devourer, a ship that belonged to the criminal syndicate The Dank Graks before it was stolen by Maz Kanata’s pirate crew. In return, the Dank Graks, led by Grand Graf Arkik Von, commandeered Maz’s ship the Venomed Scabbard, with Maz’s pilot Abadoo still trapped onboard. Sav communicates with her Jedi Master Kaktorf via holo, and attempts to explain why she has joined Maz Kanata and her crew in the effort to gain back control of the Venomed Scabbard. When Master Kaktorf orders Sav back to the Jedi Temple on Takodana, crew member Coromont Vizzle helps Sav fake a poor comms connection, giving her an excuse to hang up on her Master.
Meanwhile, the Dank Grafs set a course for Frander’s Hidden Depot, hoping to acquire some starfighters. Abadoo, hidden in the ship’s vents, overhears their plans, and goes to inform Maz of their destination. Crewmember Saya Keem senses Abadoo in the force, and when she warns Von of her suspicions, Von tells her not to worry, and that Maz following him is exactly what he wants.
Back on the Grim Devourer, the entire crew prepares to listen in to cyborg Alak’s nightly call with his ex-lover, the pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn. When Sav asks why the crew always witnesses the call, Maz explains that Alak was born and raised to a ruling family of the Scarlet Skulls, an assassin’s squad that underwent brutal training before an initiation rite that involved painting their faces red and removing their tongues. On the night of Al’s initiation, a baby girl was born in the Scarlet Skulls’ compound, and, hoping to one day save the girl from the horrors he had already lived through, he left the Scarlet Skulls before he could undergo the ritual. He returned for the baby girl, his protégée Quiet Shan, eight years later, killing most of the Skulls in the process of saving her. Maz and her crew trust Alak completely, but also know that he is prone to strong emotions due to his past, and agreed to keep watch over him on his calls with Raf to hold him accountable and prevent him from revealing any pirate secrets. After learning of the Dank Graks’ whereabouts from Abadoo, Maz’s crew head towards Frander’s Hidden Depot, hoping to intercept their enemies and steal back the Venomed Scabbard.
Arkik Von, Saya Keem, and Lavalox Verzen attempt to buy an Evsicerator from Frander, who refuses to sell any to them. Von has a bad reputation for engaging in the dark side of The Force, and the Republic is cracking down on the use of the Eviscerators, as they require The Force to operate, and, therefore, give force-users an unfair advantage. Maz’s crew arrives in time to witness Keem force-choke Frander’s Bonbraks, and Frander force-chokes Keem in response. When Sav sees that Von is willing to let Keem die, she reveals herself to those at the depot, claiming to be a bounty hunter by the name of Bazrip Ratht, who the Graf Clan have sent to oversee the deal. When the Dank Graks receive word from Drrn that the Grim Devourer is in the depot’s vicinity, they hastily take their leave.
All the while, Maz stays behind on the Grim Devourer, hoping to learn more about its tech. Drrn and the rest of the Dank Graks sneak onto the ship and reclaim it while Maz is still onboard, firing on the depot below and scattering Maz’s crew. The crew makes it back to the Venomed Scabbard to pursue The Dank Graks and save Maz, before realizing that Sav is not with them. Instead, she has stolen one of Frander’s Eviscerators, and pursues the Dank Graks on her own, telling them over her comms that she want to become one of them.
