Plot summary
On the provisional home of the New Republic, Chandrila, Chancellor Mon Mothma asks for updates from Admiral Gial Ackbar on what appears to be a dire situation for General Lando Calrissian in the Anoat sector. With no news coming from his forces, Ackbar fears they must assume all were destroyed by the rogue Imperial Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard's forces. Additionally, with New Republic resources spread thin, they cannot even send out a search party. The two are interrupted by a sudden alert of two incoming ships: An X-wing and one matching the description of Calrissian's Luxury 3000 space yacht. They are the only survivors of their battle with Adelhard.
Elsewhere on Chandrila, Princess Leia Organa discusses with her brother, Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, about how hard it is to decide how to handle Adelhard when New Republic resources are spread so thin. The siblings are soon joined by New Republic pilot Rynn Zenat who informs them they are all being summoned by Mon Mothma. In her briefing room, Mothma shares the bad news that Agent Calder Behrens has been killed on Krassis. Fortunately, he had sent a batch of intelligence to Mothma before his murder. Within the intelligence report, there was information about Adelhard's contact in the Acolytes of the Beyond, Reyna Oskure collaborating with Counselor Gallius Rax's Shadow Council, which she forwarded to the New Republic's spy on Adelhard's Imperial Star Destroyer Scepter, Kith Alaytia. The intelligence also confirmed some of the reports coming from the New Republic's mysterious informant "the Operator" alluding that the Empire will be combining their forces on the overlooked planet Jakku. Ackbar is ready to start mobilizing forces to the desert world, but Leia and Luke try to vie for some forces being sent to the Anoat sector to take down Adelhard since he poses such an unpredictable threat. Luke manages to convince Mothma and Ackbar to allow himself, Zenat, pilot Preeti Delmin, and Calrissian to take a small attack force to confront Adelhard and strike back against his treachery.
On the Scepter, Kith Alaytia approaches Adelhard to share a concerning revelation about Reyna Oskure. Adelhard expected Alaytia to merely question the loyalties of the Acolytes of the Beyond, but instead she shows him a recording of Reyna colluding with Grand Moff Randd of Rax's Shadow Council to take out Adelhard. This enrages Adelhard, and he calls for Commander Bragh to begin exacting his revenge on Oskure.
Skywalker's team prepares to breach the Iron Blockade around the Anoat sector. They are joined by the cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance, who has received vital information about a weak point in the blockade from a smuggler he knows. Meanwhile, Bragh and Alaytia bring a confident Oskure to Adelhard. She feigns being offended by Adelhard's mistreatment of her. She justifies her working with Randd as trying to play multiple sides in case any of them come out victorious. Adelhard subsequently asserts that it is he who will win since, for one, Darth Vader said that he will be the contingency plan. This evokes laughter from the Anzati mystic, and she tells him that he's far from being that since the other Imperials don't even include him on the Shadow Council and that he is incredibly deluded and misinformed. Her belittling continues, and she lets slip that Adelhard was not even supposed to still be alive. Adelhard orders Bragh to bring Oskure to the brig. Oskure, however, came prepared.
Adelhard is alerted to the voice of a Trandoshan approaching, warning the governor he is about to be murdered. The bounty hunter and assassin, Kranor enters to do the job, but Bragh engages in a brutal fist fight with the Trandoshan. Bragh eventually loses, but before Kranor can eliminate Adelhard, the New Republic's attack begins. Oskure gives Adelhard a kiss goodbye, and she and Alaytia leave for the bridge.
The New Republic's forces commence their attack, though with surprisingly little resistance. They see a strange object moving from the Star Destroyer, but disregard it as space junk in lieu of focusing on the incoming TIE fighters. They all soon receive a ship-to-ship comm from the Scepter. It is the voice of Reyna Oskure, laying claim to the fleet and the sector. She warns the New Republic to retreat and informs them of her loyalty only to herself as a show of might. Admiral Ackbar asks Lando and Luke to retreat, but the two men decide to do a quick spot-check of the area before doing so, as they know their struggles in the Anoat sector are not done yet.
In a disabled escape pod, Adelhard, Bragh, and a group of stormtroopers loyal to Adelhard spin uncontrolled towards an uninhabited planet. The governor is full of regret and shame with the realization that his core belief was a lie: The Empire he loves is dead. The escape pod crashes into the ground. A large hand reaches out from the rubble.
