Plot summary
Prologue
In 231 BBY,[3] KL-03 ("KLO") asks Ty Yorrick if the Nameless creature did not affect the others in the same way as the Jedi. Yorrick explains that Pako, Ambar and the disciples of the Path of the Open Hand regarded the Nameless hatchling as a fierce and terrible monster but that Force-sensitive individuals like the Jedi in the store regarded it as their worst nightmare, something that only existed to consume the living Force.
The hunger of the Nameless
Back in 382 BBY,[4] Jedi Master Sula Badani reels from the effects of the Nameless's presence while the the three Path cultists retreat to fight another day and decide to seal the breaches. Pako reunites with Badani and brings her to Ambar and Xinith Tarl, who had also experienced a similar convulsion. Badani tells the others that she encountered the disciples of the Path and clarifies that they did not hurt her. She explains that the disciples fled when the unidentified threat began banging against the hull. When Ambar asks if that was the same creature that killed the people in the airlock, Badani believes the creature is one and the same. She said that she sensed that the creature was driven by a hunger and need to consume the Force.
Since Pako doesn't understand how something can consume the Force, Badani explains that the creature preys on the living Force within Force users and obliterates them in its search for sustenance. Ambar says she now understands why Badani and Tarl reacted the way they did towards the creature. The group then hear banging on the ship hull and realizes that the creature knows where they are.
The Weequay disciple
Meanwhile the Weequay disciple Kane attacks Padawan Coron Solstus with a piece of ship hull. Solstus dodges his blow but slips and falls. Kane swings his piece of metal but strikes a glass panel. Resuming his attack, the Weequay knocks Solstus' lightsaber out of his hand. Before he can deliver a killing blow, Master Rok Buran intervenes and slices through the metal shard with his lightsaber. A loose piece of metal strikes Solstus on the head but it does not cut him.
Buran forces the Weequay disciple to surrender. When Kane taunts him that a Jedi would not harm an unarmed man, Buran counters that he will use force to stop him if he attacks. Buran then checks on Solstus who tells him that he sensed a disturbance in the Force. Buran also recalls sensing something before the attack. Kane taunts the Jedi for showing weakness and accuse them of being pompous and arrogant. Solstus finds some cables which he uses to bind Kane.
When Solstus asks what the Path of the Open Hand is doing in this part of the galaxy, Kane responds that their hand is no longer open but rather a fist that would strike their opponents. When Buran challenges his assumption that the Jedi are the enemy, the Weequay accuses the Jedi of being warmongers during the Battle of Jedha and condemns them for bending the living Force to their will. He believes the Jedi are hypocrites for using violence and calling themselves peacekeepers. When Solstus asks about the mysterious creature outside, KaneKane. responds that the "thing" will bring the Jedi to their knees.
Ambar's idea
Elsewhere, Master Tarl tells Badani that the Nameless creature is so hungry. Badani tells her fellow Jedi to focus on their mantras. Ambar asks if she can helped the weakened Jedi, who want to get away from the creature. Due to Tarl's injuries, Ambar thinks that it will be too risky to move her and that they still need to find the medical supplies to treat her injuries. Badani insists on moving as the creature continues banging on the hull.
Pako speaks with Ambar in private and expresses his fear that the creature will breach the hull eventually. Due to the incapacitated state of the Jedi Masters, Ambar says that they as Pathfinders will have to fix the problem. She believes that the creature is also affecting Coron and Rok in the same way. Though Pako is fearful of being killed by the Nameless, Ambar tells him that they are not affected by the creature but need to come up with a plan to get away from it. When Pako mentions the ship's tough metallic hull, Ambar comes up with a plan to reroute the residual power in the ship's systems to the hull's metal plating in order to electrocute the creature. Pako agrees with Ambar's idea.
While it may not be enough to stop the creature, the two reason that it could buy them enough time to escape. Pako tasks EX-5A ("EX-Five") with finding the way to the engine room, where the residual power is stored in the latency circuits. Since they will have to navigate through the surviving Path disciples, the two agree that they have to be ready for combat. When Ambar reminds Pako they need to evacuate the incapacitated Jedi, Pako grumbles that he signed up to explore the galaxy and not to deal with exploding ships and monsters that eat Jedi. Ambar quips this is fun.
The approaching danger
Back in the front section of the Path starship, Solstus finds there is enough power aboard the starship to transmit a repeating distress signal but it will take time. Buran says that time is not on their side and that they need to warn the others. While working with wires, Solstus asks the Jedi Master what happened on Jedha that caused the Path of the Open Hand to change from a peaceful protest group into extremists.
Buran replies that he doesn't know a lot about what happened on Jedha but that peace talks between the planets Eiram and E'ronoh degenerated into a battle. While reactivating the scanner, the two Jedi discover that something is approaching the second ship where Sula and the others are based. Solstus asks what if the creature sees them. Buran decides that they will watch the readout until they have a clear path.
Meanwhile, Pako senses through a reader that the creature is still following them on the outside of the ship. Ambar advises them to head towards a hangar or cargo bay. Ambar finds a medical kit and Badani says they should find somewhere quiet to treat Tarl. The group enter a wrecked cargo bay which is littered with boxes of large purple gemstones.
In the present, Yorrick tells KLO that the Jedi had stumbled upon a room full of Nameless eggs, which she describes as a "proverbial time bomb." Consulting the ship computer, Yorrick notices that their ship has exited hyperspace. When KLO remarks that time has passed when they are having fun, Yorrick realizes that they have arrived at different coordinates from the ones she had selected. When KLO suggests that Yorrick was distracted and selected a different destination in error, she asks if he tampered with the coordinates. KLO denies doing so and says that he just wanted to hear what happened to Xinith, Sula and EX-5A. Yorrick reluctantly continues the store.
Different missions
Back in the past, Pako and EX-5A head towards the engine room. Pako bickers with the droid, who replies in Binary. Approaching the engine room, the two are attacked by the Path cultists, who shoot at them. While Pako returns fire, he asks EX-5A if there is an alternative way to the engine room. When EX-5A suggests exiting the engine room from outside, Pako objects and reiterates his order that the droid find another way that does not involve them getting killed.
Meanwhile, Solstus and Buran exit the front section of the Path ship with the captive Kane, who mocks the Jedi. After Solstus reports that the scanners showed that the creature was still on the roof of the rear section of the starship, Buran decides they should make a run for the other ship. The two experience a disturbance in the Force. Kane attempts to flee but is captured and mauled by another Nameless creature. Buran tells Solstus to fall back inside their ship.
Elsewhere, EX-5A discovers some access tunnels and unlocks them. Pako shoots one of the Path disciples and the pair take the opportunity to flee through the access tunnels into the engine room. Inside the engine room, Pako and EX-5A discover the power regulators. After confirming that the latent circuits are holding a good residual charge, Pako enlists EX-5A's help in rerouting the manifold processor onto the ship hull. Meanwhile, the first Nameless creature closes in on the Jedi and Ambar from the outside. The rerouted electricity hits the outer hull, electrocuting the Nameless.
Outside, Solstus and Buran witness the first Nameless creature being electrocuted. The two make a run for the rear section of the Path ship but discover that the Nameless creature is stirring. While Buran attempts to cut through the hull of the rear section with his lightsaber, Solstus senses that he is being attacked by the creature, which begins devouring the living Force within him.
