Plot summary
Difficult times, difficult decisions
In the present, Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis reflects that she has never seen Marshal Avar Kriss look so tired over the past few weeks. In a flashback, Kriss along with Treenis, Jedi Masters Sskeer and Estala Maru meet with Master Stellan Gios via holoprojector aboard Starlight Beacon. Maru informs Gios that the space station has successfully traveled to the Eiram system without incident. Trennis reflects that towing the Starlight Beacon to Dalna was only the beginning of the station responding to various natural disasters including the Eiram cyclone disaster and the Dalnan evacuation. She says that responding to these disasters is the Starlight Beacon's duty. In retrospect, she thinks that seems easier a few weeks ago before the events on Xais.
Earlier on Xais, Kriss attempts to use the Force to prevent Lourna Dee from escaping on her starship. She calls Sskeer and Trennis for help but Sskeer warns that Trennis is in no state to help. Avar tries to stop Dee's ship but her Force powers alone are not enough. She laments that they could have stopped her.
Back in the present, Kriss wishes that she could have done more. Maru tells the other Jedi that the pumps at the main Eiramian water purification site are at 45 percent efficiency. Kriss then turns her attention to the installation of the path engine on the Ataraxia. Maru confirms that Goonral Monshi has finished installing the engine. When Kriss asks if it is safe to use, Gios via holoprojector asks if this was the path drive that was salvaged from the Nihil ship that was destroyed at the Battle of Galov. Kriss confirms this is the cae and argues that the path engine will be helpful since it contains the location of the main Nihil base. She plans to attack the Great Hall of the Nihil.
When Gios warns that the Jedi Council has advised caution, Kriss counters that time is running out since the Nihil have a weapon that can turn people to dust. She believes that Dee is key to the weapon. Based on the information from the captured Nihil ships, Kriss explains that the pirates operate from an area called No-Space. She adds that the Great Hall is a platform protected by vacuum shields and was recently fortified following the events on Dalna. When Gios advises caution, Kriss argues that the Jedi must launch a counter-attack. She says that the events on Xais shows that the Jedi should not wait for the Nihil to attack first. She exits the meeting to prepare for the assault on the Great Hall, ignoring Gios.
Trennis blames herself for the recent failure on Xais. Later, she visits the twins Ceret and Terec in their hospital ward. The twins are still in a hibernation trance. She blames herself for what has happened to them. When Master Maru enters the room, Trennis tells him that the twins are still alive. Maru asks Trennis to watch Marshal Kriss because he is concerned that she has allowed her emotions to govern her path since the events on Valo. He is concerned that Kriss is not listening to her Jedi peers or the Force. When Trennis suggests that Sskeer be the one that watches over Kriss, Maru responds that they both know that is not possible.
Sskeer's suspension
In a flashback scene, Kriss says they need to contact the Ataraxia and all relay stations to track down Lourna Dee. Sskeer says they need to focus on evacuating the incapacitated twins and Trennis back to Starlight Beacon. An enraged Kriss responds that Sskeer will not get to advise him. She chastises the Jedi Master for ignoring her orders to use defensive maneuvers and instead slaughtering the Nihil warriors like a rancor. She says that his actions are unworthy of a Jedi. Sskeer conceded and tries to explain himself.
Kriss is having none of that and orders him to hand over his lightsaber as part of proceedings to relieve him of his duties as a Jedi. Trennis protests but Sskeer advises her not to get involved in his disciplinary proceedings. Trennis pleads with Marshal Kriss but the Jedi leader is unmoved.
In the present, Sskeer meditates inside his quarters aboard the Starlight Beacon]]. Padawan Trennis visits him but Sskeer wants to be left alone. Trennis insists on talking. Sskeer tells her that he is ashamed that he withheld a secret from his fellow Jedi. Regarding Trennis as someone he can trust, he explains that he has Magrak Syndrome, a rare disease that affects Trandoshans. He explains that Magrak causes the Trandoshan brain to give into base urges like aggression, fury and rage. Sskeer says he has been struggling to deal with the condition but that has left him unable to connect with the Force.
When Trennis asks if there is a cure, Sskeer says that Doctor Gino'le says that there are possible cures but that Sskeer might lose the ability to wield the Force. Sskeer says that he must focus on maintaining his balance so that he does not become a danger to others. Trennis says she won't give up on her Master and encourages him to persevere. She explains that Master Maru wants her to keep an eye on Kriss and says that the past few months have been a series of disasters. Sskeer disagrees. Trennis tells Sskeer that she needs him to accompany them for their mission aboard the Ataraxia.
Mission departure
The Ataraxia is parked in a hangar aboard the Starlight Beacon. Monshi confirms that the path drive has been fully integrated into the Jedi ship but dismisses it as pirate junk. An irritated Kriss counters that this "pirate junk" is going to take them to Dee, whom she believes is the orchestrator of the Valo Atrocity and who reduced their fellow Jedi to husks. Monshi confirms the engine is operational. When Trennis enters the bridge, Kriss expresses relief that the Knight has decided to join them. Kriss says she would understand if she wanted to sit out of the mission after the events on Xais.
Trennis says that she is doing this for Ceret, Terec and Sskeer. The suspended Sskeer enters the bridge, saying that he is still a Jedi until the Jedi Council passes judgment on him and says that he must serve until then. Trennis vouches for Sskeer and promises that she would deal with him if he steps out of line. Kriss orders her crew to take their positions and tells the hub that they are clearing the bay doors. As the ship rockets into space, Kriss wishes that the Force will be with them and orders Monshi to activate the path drive on her mark. Deep down, Trennis struggles with fear of the future but resolves to not let it hold her back.
