- "Somehow, the lightsaber duels list has returned."
- ―Ratts T
This page aims to compile all lightsaber duels within the canon continuity. Originally created by Tomotron, the list was featured on the lightsaber duel page but was later removed after disagreement on its purpose and criteria. He maintained the list on his personal workbench for a time but eventually stopped updating it. With his permission, I have resurrected the list here and plan to update and modify it in my free time. Tomotron has my permission to edit this page, this was granted privately on Discord.
Please note that this page is a work in progress. Having ported this list over from previous versions, it may not align entirely with the new rules I've settled on below. Also, as this is a workbench, it is not beholden to the standards of mainspace articles, so it may lack substantial sourcing. But it's all canon, I promise, and just for fun anyway!
Methodology and structure
What is and is not a "duel"
Although a seemingly simple question, determining what events are suitable for this page grows more complex when looking at various battles throughout the saga, and in fact disagreement over the exact criteria of what makes a duel was one of the reasons that led to the list's original deletion. While attempting to define the term, I find that "you know one when you see one" is a good rule of thumb in most cases, but of course vision tends to get blurry when looking at Star Wars. So with that in mind, some ground rules have been established.
If an event meets one or both of the following criteria, then it does count as a duel for the purposes of this list:
- Two or more individuals armed with lightsabers engage each other in melee combat (example: Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader on Cloud City)
- Two or more individuals engage each other in melee combat, with at least one wielding a lightsaber and another wielding a lightsaber-resistant weapon (example: Ahsoka Tano and Morgan Elsbeth on Corvus)
- An exception is made for fights involving unnamed generic combatants (MagnaGuards, purge troopers, etc.). Fights against named individuals (FN-2199, IG-101 and IG-102) do count, however.
If an event meets one or more of the following criteria, then it does not count as a duel for the purposes of this list.
- Two or more individuals engage in combat with weapons other than lightsabers (example: Finn and Phasma aboard the Supremacy)
- Two or more individuals engage in combat, with one side wielding lightsabers and the opposing side wielding only standard melee or ranged weapons (example: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jango Fett on Kamino)
- Lightsaber combat takes place in a dream or vision, with no foothold in reality (example: Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader on Dagobah)
- Exceptions are granted to fights that involve the altering of reality but are still grounded in the physical world (example: Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren on Crait)
- Battles that occur between massive groups on a large scale, even if both sides wield lightsabers (example: the Jedi and Sith forces at the Great Scourge of Malachor)
Keep in mind that these rules may change over time as more media is released.
Organization
This list is structured in chronological order, broken up into sections based on the era divisions introduced in The High Republic comic series and later expanded upon in Star Wars: Timelines. The latter source places markers for the beginning and end of each era to specific BBY/ABY dates (which I was fairly close to to begin with anyway, just to toot my own horn), noted as follows:
- The High Republic: c. 500 BBY to 100 BBY
- Fall of the Jedi: c. 100 BBY to 19 BBY (Attack on Kamino)
- Reign of the Empire: 18 BBY to 1 BBY (Battle of Scarif)
- Age of Rebellion: 0 to 5 ABY (Battle of Jakku)
- The New Republic: 6 ABY to 27 ABY (Napkin Bombing Incident)
- Rise of the First Order: 28 ABY to 35 ABY (Battle of Exegol)
The order of individuals in the "Combatants" fields is determined by affiliation. The party that is generally associated with the light side of the Force or is otherwise aligned with the "good guys" is designated as "Combatant(s) 1," whereas adherents of the dark side of the Force or the "bad guys" are designated as "Combatant(s) 2." In cases where affiliation is unclear or shared between both parties, whichever party emerges as the victor is designated as "Combatant(s) 1." If there is no clear victor in the duel, combatants are ordered alphabetically.
Also, just for fun, the combatants' names are highlighted in the same color as the weapon(s) they used in each duel. Lightsaber-wielders are bolded to stand on from those armed with alternative weapons.
