- "Nothing wrong with a little order, right?"
- ―Freck, on Mapuzo's occupation
Mapuzo was a Galactic Empire–controlled mining planet located in the Mid Rim Territories. The planet was once lush and full of life, but had been rendered a wasteland due to the Empire's mining activity for vintrium. To protect the mining operation, the Imperial Army maintained a full battery on world. One Mapuzo citizen, Freck, was a strong supporter of the Empire and befriended the local stormtroopers.[3] After rescuing Princess Leia Organa,[4] Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to escape the planet Daiyu by hiding on a transport that was traveling to Mapuzo.[3]
The Empire's Inquisitorius was able to track Kenobi to Mapuzo. Three of their number—the Fifth Brother, the Third Sister, and the Fourth Sister, accompanied by Sith Lord Darth Vader—traveled to the planet in search of Kenobi. In the ensuing battle on Mapuzo, Kenobi and Vader clashed[3] for the first time since their duel on Mustafar.[4]
Behind the scenes
- "That was on location, and I always enjoy it when Star Wars goes on location. It sort of adds a different sort of slant to the whole thing."
- ―Hayden Christensen discussing filming a scene as Anakin Skywalker in a vision
Mapuzo was first pictured in the new Star Wars canon in the teaser trailer for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, a 2022 Disney+ television series. It was first mentioned in "Part II" of the series,[4] which aired on May 26, 2022.[6] It first appeared in the third episode of the series, which was released on June 1, 2022.[7] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Mapuzo was briefly mentioned in the context of a break-in that occurred there in Alliance Intelligence Reports, a 1995 West End Games supplement[8] to Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, although the sourcebook did not specify what Mapuzo was.[9] The Mapuzo system was then mentioned in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, authored by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry.[10]
The first scene shot with Hayden Christensen was when he played Anakin Skywalker in a vision seen by Kenobi[5] on Mapuzo.[3] The scene was shot on location, and Ewan McGregor,[5] the actor who played Kenobi,[3] insisted on staying on the set to be part of Christensen's first shot back.[5]
