- "Murderer? Is it murder to rid the galaxy of you Jedi filth?!"
- ―General Grievous
A Jedi hunter, also known as a Jedi killer, was an individual tasked with the hunting and killing of members of the Jedi Order.[8]
History
Republic Era
High Republic Era
The Children of the Storm were former Force-sensitives, all of whom had been experimented on by Baron Boolan,[9] who acted as Jedi hunters[6] during the Nihils' rule over the Occlusion Zone.[9] Part of their mission was to capture further Force-sensitives for experimentation.[6] Some Nihil under General Abediah Viess also served as Jedi hunters.[5]
Late Republic Era
- "Listen to me, Jedi. I do not care about your politics. I do not care about your Republic. I only live to see you die!"
- ―General Grievous
During the Clone Wars, Grievous, the leader of the Separatist Alliance army, eliminated many Jedi.
Nautolan pirate queen Zilastra held a vendetta against the Jedi Order due to Councilman Sifo-Dyas and, in her adulthood, plotted to unite various pirate factions to help her assassinate the Jedi High Council. She employed gas against Jedi and marks her Jedi kills with a sabaac card representing "The Idiot" within their mouth. She notably clashed with Jedi Master Depa Billaba and Mace Windu, developing a fierce enmity with the former.[10]
Thane Chulok was regarded as a Jedi killer and deadly warrior by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who survived a encounter with him. In a post-mortem message, he tasked Mace Windu with protecting the planet Metagos from his organization, leading to the Jedi Master to eventually confronting him several times before ultimately prevailing and killing him.[11]
The Kaleesh Supreme Commander of the Separatist military General Grievous was trained in the art of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku and claimed the lightsabers of Jedi he slew as trophies.[8] As the Clone Wars progressed, Grievous garnered a fearsome reputation as a formidable Jedi killer, striking terror into the hearts of Republic citizens.[12] Among Grievous' victims included Neebo, Nahdar Vebb,[13] a Mikkian Jedi, and a human Padawan.[14] Like their cyborg master, the IG-100 MagnaGuards were also notorious for being Jedi killers,[15] having been specifically constructed to take on Jedi Knights.[16]
Bounty hunters were also sometimes employed as Jedi hunters, as the bounty hunter Cad Bane was known for killing Jedi during the Clone Wars.[17] The Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon was a Jedi hunter who fought Jedi Masters Depa Billaba and Mace Windu during the war.[18]
Imperial Era
- "In actuality, I would say the Jedi hunt themselves. Do you know the key to hunting a Jedi, friend? It is patience. Jedi cannot help what they are. Their compassion leaves a trail. For example, in our line of work, rumors run rampant. Here's one I heard just recently. It involves a Jedi hiding right here in your lovely saloon. Let's say ours is a wanderer. Maybe he's looking for people like him. Comes across this establishment. Nice place. And then he sees you. A man in need. Perhaps the locals are stealing from you. Threatening you. So what is the Jedi to do? Help you and risk exposure? Or move on? Now, if he were smart, he'd keep moving, but the Jedi Code is like an itch. He cannot help it. So he steps in and saves your saloon. You offer him a place to hide. Fresh water, shade from the suns, but the stories, they begin and they travel quickly. His compassion has been his undoing."
- ―The Grand Inquisitor
Following the transformation of the Galactic Republic into the first Galactic Empire, the Inquisitorius rose as an organization of Jedi hunters trained by Darth Vader to harness the dark side of the Force and wield double-bladed spinning lightsabers as they assisted in the Empire's extermination of the Jedi.[20][21] Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine decreed that captured former members of the Jedi Order were to be converted into Inquisitors, or otherwise be killed, further cementing the downfall of the Jedi religion and perversion of the Force.[22] Vader himself would also carry out hunts for Jedi, particularly for high-profile Jedi like Tensu Run[23] and Obi-Wan Kenobi.[24]
Ochi also remained in the Emperor's employ.[18] He was sent to kill Sidious's Sith apprentice Darth Vader and manage to put up a fight against the damaged Sith Lord and former Jedi Knight.[25] During the New Republic Era, Ochi battled with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker during the quest for Exegol.[18]
