Opening crawl

HOPE DIES
Part III
Queen Trios of Shu-Torun, instrumental in outfitting a
powerful new fleet of Mon Calamari ships for the Rebel
Alliance, has betrayed her new allies by sabotaging their
cruisers' vital systems and selling the rebels out to the
evil Galactic Empire.

Although Trios has evaded capture by Princess Leia, the
rebels have discovered that the devious queen's
sabotage did not disable the fail-safes of their hangar
bay doors, which will unseal should any fighter
broadcast a rebel signal.

With comm systems down across the fleet, the
Rebellion's only hope for survival rests with Han Solo's
ability to fly his way through the battle and deliver that
information to Luke Skywalker and the other pilots. But
first, Han's got to shake Darth Vader off his tail….

Plot summary

A chaotic battle unfolds at the Mako-Ta Rebel base. Darth Vader, piloting his TIE Fighter, relentlessly hunts Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon. Han, who appears panicked, maneuvers his ship towards the bay doors of a rebel cruiser as Vader fires several missiles at him.

Meanwhile, a nearby rebel cruiser, commanded by Lajaie, takes heavy fire, and its shields fail. As the crew evacuates in escape pods, Vader orders his TIE Fighters to target them, destroying many. Han realizes he cannot get close enough to the hangar doors, so Chewbacca places C-3PO in a device and blasts him out into space toward a nearby rebel cruiser.

C-3PO lands in a hangar bay and informs Luke Skywalker that the bay doors will open if a ship flies toward them. Against General Dodonna's orders to stand down, Luke starts his X-wing, declares that he will be the test, and flies directly at the hangar doors. They open at the last possible moment, allowing the Rebel fighters to launch. Inspired by this act, Luke names the newly formed group Rogue Squadron.
