Plot summary

After Luke Skywalker and General Hera Syndulla discuss recent rebel defectors, Poe Dameron pledges his support to the cause, saying that if Luke believes in it, that's all he needs. They learn that the Empire has put a system-wide alert on the defectors' shuttle and that its last signal originated from Coruscant, specifically from level 2685. Although Luke can't be more specific, he has a strong feeling that the defectors are important.

Meanwhile, on Coruscant, defectors Bevelyn and her family are on the run. Bevelyn's partner stays behind to slow down the incoming Coruscant Security Force Speeders, scavenging supplies from the shuttle before making his escape and reuniting with his family.

Luke decides he needs to go to Coruscant, but Dameron reminds him it's the Emperor's home world. Luke replies that both the Emperor and Darth Vader are known to be offworld at the moment, somewhere in the Mid Rim.

Luke arrives on Coruscant dressed as an Imperial Officer in the Works District. He hands his lightsaber to the rebels who flew him there, explaining that he doesn't want to be tempted to use it, as it would instantly give him away.

Elsewhere on the planet, Bevelyn and her family, who are still on the run, seek a warm place to rest and dry off. Bevelyn is forced to shoot at a menacing Corridor Ghoul that lives in the underground. Luke, approaching from another direction, is shot at by Bevelyn, who mistakes him for an Imperial officer.

As troopers close in on them, Luke uses the Force to bring down the ceiling of the tunnel, revealing a number of hungry Corridor Ghouls. Luke and the family flee to safety.

Later, aboard the rebel fleet, Luke reports to the rebel leaders, telling them that the family is now with intelligence, getting debriefed. He says he did get a chance to speak with them on the way back. When he asks for Leia, he is told she is with a separate division as part of a strategy to not have too much of the fleet together at once.

Luke reveals to the shocked rebel leaders that the parents are undercover Crimson Dawn agents. The mother is a cargo specialist and the father is the primary aide to the commander of a top-secret Imperial weapons facility. The Empire is building another Death Star. Mon Mothma remains optimistic, believing they can destroy it again.

Development

The scene in which Luke Skywalker meets Melton's family was inspired by the time Charles Soule met Mark Hamill, the actor who plays Skywalker, at New York Comic Con with a few of his friends and their kids. Soule added that like Skywalker in the issue, Hamill immediately bent down and greeted the kids, and noted their faces looked like those of Reen and Zelly in the issue.[3]

Continuity

The issue depicts Luke Skywalker informing rebel leaders Mon Mothma, Gial Ackbar, and Hera Syndulla about the Galactic Empire's construction of another Death Star. This contradicts Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, where the opening crawl establishes that Skywalker did not know of the construction.[4]
