Jon Melton was a human male who lived during the reign of the Galactic Empire.^[1] At some point he met and married the human female Bevelyn, and the couple had two children, Reen and Zelly. Melton and Bev eventually came to serve the Empire, though during their service they became disillusioned with the Empire and, believing Lady Qi'ra, the leader of the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn, had a worthwhile goal of taking down the Empire, became spies for Qi'ra,^[2] who Melton referred to as "Auntie Q." The couple eventually came to serve on the second Death Star, where Melton served as a lieutenant and aide to Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod.^[1] Between 3 ABY and 4 ABY,^[4] Jerjerrod called upon Melton to inform ISB Major Sharin of the policies used to keep the station's location safe and secret.^[1]

At the same time, Qi'ra activated her agents, including Melton and Bev, within the Empire and instructed them to cause chaos against the Empire. The couple decided that they would defect from the Empire and leave the Death Star to inform the Rebel Alliance about its existence.^[1]
