- "We're all hungry! Because credits are scarce, there's never enough."
- ―Silvo
Silvo's pirates were a multispecies pirate crew adhering to the Pirate's Code. Active during the New Republic Era, they lived off plundering cargo ships from their massive pirate frigate, occasionally docking on the pirate asteroid Borgo Prime. Around 9 ABY, a mutiny briefly deposed Silvo, replacing him with Brutus. During this period, the crew became known as Brutus's pirate crew or Captain Brutus' crew. After reclaiming his leadership by killing the mutineer, Silvo led the pirates in the Invasion of At Attin, an isolated world housing an Old Republic credit mint. The pirates' plan to exploit the planet's credit production failed when a New Republic squadron, alerted by the young Skeleton Crew, arrived to thwart the invasion.
Silvo's crew mutinied against him after a failed raid on a merchant freighter. Escaping from prison, he used the help of the Skeleton Crew—a group of young At Attin residents—to locate Captain Tak Rennod's datalog and access the planet's coordinates. Although captured again, Silvo delayed his death sentence by sharing his findings with his former crew. Seizing an opportunity, he soon regained the pirates' loyalty by killing the mutineer Brutus. As captain once more, Silvo bypassed At Attin's Barrier by stowing away on the Skeleton Crew's ship, the Onyx Cinder. Posing as a Galactic Republic emissary, he infiltrated the planet and disabled its credit minting overseer, "the Supervisor," allowing his crew to invade. While Gunter commanded the pirate frigate, Silvo coordinated the attack from the Supervisor's Tower. However, the Skeleton Crew contacted astronomer Kh'ymm, who summoned a New Republic squadron. Silvo's conquest came to an end as his frigate was shelled and sent adrift into a water canal.

The Onyx Cinder, with the pirate frigate in the background
Silvo's pirates,[7] also known as Brutus's pirate crew[8] or Captain Brutus' crew,[9] were a group of space pirates who were headquartered aboard Silvo's pirate frigate. The crew consisted of individuals of different species[1] and genders.[10] Though divided by their specific motivations, the pirates were united by the common goal of getting rich through acquiring credits.[6] To this end, they assaulted other starships and plundered their cargo,[1] divvying up the loot.[6] On some occasions, the pirates would stop by the asteroid Borgo Prime, a starport infamous for pirate and underworld activity, which at least one captain of Silvo's pirates recognized as[2] his[6] own property.[2]
The crew was led by a single captain,[1] with a First Mate acting as their right hand.[8] The pirates would address their captain as "captain"[11] or "sir."[6] A captain could be ousted through so-called "mutiny," in which several crew members rebelled against their leader to establish a new one.[1] A new captain could have their predecessor detained pending trial.[12] During trials, the captain would serve as a judge, occupying a throne-like seat, and was free to issue a death sentence, with another crew member overseeing the process. Committed to the stipulations of the Pirate's Code, Silvo's pirates honored equal time and the Right of Last Appeal, which allowed the defendant to deliver a speech as long as a dedicated plasma hourglass continued to run.[6] A crew member could also replace a captain by killing them and regaining the trust of their comrades.[11]
The captain's seat aboard the frigate
The pirates also different personal rivalries[12] and alliances.[13] While Brutus sought to humiliate his predecessor Silvo,[12] the latter was on good terms with Chaelt, whom he knew very well.[13]
Operating from a[1] massive[14] frigate, the pirates captured other starships using drill-like boarding tubes, which would pierce through the target ship's hull. Several waves of attackers would subsequently enter the ship, with the first few waves being most exposed to death. Finally, the captain would enter the ship at last.[1] The pirates also deployed at least two types of armed transports—a larger and a smaller one—to travel to other worlds[8] and Pirate Snub Fighters to explore nebulas,[11], as well as pirate dropships to transport assault teams to the ground during planetary invasions.[3] Since their massive frigate was equipped with an airlock, the crew employed airlocking as a penalty measure, in which an individual—whether a former captain[11] or an enemy—would be tossed out of an airlock.[1]
History
Empty vault, full mutiny
- "I know these cycles have been lean. That some of you have all but given up on me, your good old captain. It's all forgotten now. Because at long last, I've brought you to the only thing that matters. Cold… hard… credits."
- ―Silvo, to his underlings
The mutiny against Silvo
Silvo's pirates were active during the New Republic Era.[1] The crew was formed by around 9 ABY,[4] by which point the Nikto Vane had joined its ranks after Gorian Shard's pirate crew was dissolved during the siege on Nevarro.[15]. Around 9 ABY, the pirates were led by a[1] Force-sensitive[12] human individual[1] known as "Mad" Captain[6] Silvo, with the Shistavanen Brutus serving as[1] his[12] First Mate.[6] At some point, Silvo realized that some of hisunderlings had come to doubt his leadership skills. To reassert his position, he launched a raid on a merchant freighter, believing it was transporting a valuable cargo of credits. The pirates attacked from their frigate, piercing through the freighter's hull with drill-like boarding tubes. As the boarding team clashed with the defending merchants, a group of spacesuited pirates disabled the freighter's cannons from space. At last, Brutus boarded the ship, clearing the way for Silvo by gunning down the remaining survivors. Turning back,[1] he[6] informed Silvo that the ship was now his. A helmeted Silvo, clapping his hand in praise of the Shistavanen, boarded the vessel in the company of Chaelt and Gunter. With the enemy defeated, the pirates gathered by the magnetically sealed vault. When the merchant captain refused to collaborate, Silvo had him tossed out of the airlock. As the vault door was being opened, the captain paced around his crew, boasting about leading them to "cold, hard credits" despite his earlier failures. However, when the vault was finally opened, it held nothing but a single credit. Brutus shouldered past the others to see the coin his own eyes before lamenting the futile loss of many pirate lives. As several crew members aimed their weapons at Silvo, he suspected mutiny and launched a counteroffensive. While many pirates joined the rebellion, a few—such as Chaelt and Gunter—did not take part in the mutiny.[1] Silvo's defense was eventually in vane, as Brutus was soon established as the new leader,[2] and the gang came to be known as "Brutus's pirate crew"[8] or "Captain Brutus' crew."[9]
Skirmish on Borgo Prime
Captain Brutus and his pirate underlings—Gunter, Vane, Pax, and Chaelt
With Brutus serving as the new captain, Gunter rose to the position of First Mate.[8] When the pirates shortly arrived on Borgo Prime—a starport that Brutus claimed to be his own—separated and each went about their own business. An Ishi Tib had a cybernetic implant welded into[2] his[1] injured eyestack to compensate for the eye loss he had suffered during the raid, while Beef had[2] his[16] knife hone at a local kiosk. Meanwhile, Vane was hanging around a local noodle bar, and a Warthog pirate strolled along the docking area alongside an eyestalked companion. The Warthog happened to walk past a group of four younglings[2] from the Skeleton Crew[17]—Fern, KB, Neel, and Wim. It being the first time they had ventured out of their home planet, the children remarked that these aliens looked weird. Some time later, the younglings approached a dance club, where they were spotted by Beef, who eyeballed them as they made their decision to look for direction somewhere else.[2]
Straddling off, Neel and Wim decided to stop by the noodle bar, where they tried to pay with Old Republic credits. As the fry cook attempted to con the younglings into leaving him a tip for good service, Vane approached the food counter to see the coin for[2] himself.[18] The boys insisted they hailed from the legendary world of At Attin, known as the mythical "planet of eternal treasure" in pirate lore. While originally skeptical about the authenticity of the currency, Vane eventually rushed off in pursuit of the youngsters after Wim flipped[2] his[16] bowl into the grill to cause distraction. When Vane caught up with the Skeleton Crew, he all but caused the children to surrender by disarming Fern. However, the young travelers were defended by the pirate droid SM-33, who regarded Fern as its captain. During the fight, Vane was pushed backwards, and the Warthog alien—who led a barrage of blaster shots—had his snout burned by SM-33's arm shield, red-hot from the impact. Having shaken off the pirates[2] and thugs,[16] the Skeleton Crew attained the docking area and was just about to board a space dinghy when a sudden shot from Brutus's ion rifle disabled their droid. Surrounded by his pirate underlings—including Gunter, Vane, Pax, and Chaelt—Brutus closed in on the children, wondering how they had obtained the coordinates to his port and how they had gotten past their cannons. Finally, the captain ordered locking the younglings down in a brig to cool off before further interrogation.[2]
Ex-captain at large
- "Do you want me to go after 'em, Captain?"
"[growls] Put a bounty on his head. I want him groveling at my feet. And those pups." - ―Gunter and Brutus
Brutus and his First Mate Gunter at Starport Borgo
A former member of his old crew,[6] Silvo happened to share one brig with the Skeleton Crew younglings. Taking advantage of his Force-sensitivity,[12] the man[19] managed to break free and make it aboard the Skeleton Crew's starship. The younglings, however, persuaded him to return for SM-33, who remained behind in a droid repair shop. In the meantime, Brutus's pirate crew realized that the inmate had escaped. As Beef urged everyone to report any suspicious activity, Silvo was sneaking right behind him on his way to his destination. Upon locating SM-33, the man encountered the Ishi Tib Benjar Pranic. Benjar was surprised to see Silvo on the loose right before his trial, and Silvo clarified that he had escaped on his own. During the ensuing conversation, Benjar remarked that Silvo had been a better leader than Brutus. However, as Silvo was about to leave, Benjar announced that the encounter would be reported to the new captain.[12]
As Silvo piloted a dinghy back to the starship, a Quarren pirate gave chase, but he managed to shake them off before docking. However, Silvo found the vessel tethered by a reinforced fuel line that he could not snap. Watching the commotion from the landing platform, Brutus ordered his crew to open fire with laser cannons. To evade the incoming blasts, Silvo and the Skeleton Crew younglings jumped into hyperspace. The sudden maneuver snapped the fuel line, sending it recoiling into one of the asteroid's platforms just as the ship narrowly escaped destruction. Brutus and several of his crew—including Beef and the Ishi Tib with a prosthetic eye—watched as a scaffolding collapsed right in front of them. When Gunter asked the captain whether[12] he[16] should pursue the runaways, Brutus instead ordered him to put a bounty on Silvo's head, as he wanted him groveling at his feet.[12]
Silvo's hunt for At Attin
- "Now, why is it he decided to let you loose right before your trial?"
"I let myself loose. I just might have finally found the big score I always talked of."
"Oh, that's interesting. Wouldn't have nothing to do with those children what showed up, eh, pockets full of sparkling dataries." - ―Benjar Pranic and Silvo as he reveals his finding and motivations for his escape
Kh'ymm's guidance helped establish the coordinates to what he believed was At Attin.
A new member of the Skeleton Crew,[17] Silvo led the way to the Observatory Moon, seeking advice from his friend Kh'ymm, an avian astronomer. Kh'ymm informed the crew about the Jewels of the Old Republic, which were a group of planets whose populations were dedicated to minting credits for the Old Republic. Hidden from the rest of the galaxy, these words did not explicitly appear on any charts; however, by analyzing clues provided by the younglings, Kh'ymm was able to locate one planet that would match their descriptions. Concerned about the children's safety and their involvement with Silvo, the astronomer also alerted a New Republic unit. Upon returning back to their ship, the Skeleton Crew managed to shake off the New Republic forces, ho remained cautious due to the presence of children on board.[12]
Upon reaching their destination and landing on the planet, the Skeleton Crew realized they were nowhere near At Attin. Instead, they had arrived on At Achrann, a former Jewel of the Old Republic now ravaged by a military conflict between the Troiks and the Hattans. In the Fallen Sanctum, the crew discovered coordinates leading to other Jewels of the Old Republic, but those for At Attin proved indecipherable.[20] After departing At Achrann, the crew overrode SM-33's memory circuit, revealing that the droid had once belonged to the renowned pirate Captain Tak Rennod. Infamous for his bestiality, Rennod was remembered for plundering multiple starships, going down in history as the most feared pirate to have ever lived. According Silvo, Rennod had been searching for the treasure of At Attin when he and his crew mysteriously vanished. Moreover, the ship the younglings had found on At Attin—and were now travelling aboard with Silvo—turned out to be none other than Rennod's own vessel, the Onyx Cinder, which suggested the captain had indeed reached At Attin and ultimately crashed on its surface. Guided by SM-33, the Skeleton Crew set course for Lanupa, home to Captain Rennod's Lair, where they hoped to access his datalog and uncover the true coordinates to At Attin.[5]
Pokkit's tip and and invasion on a hotel
- "Zentin, Silvo, whatever you call him. I'm claiming your bounty."
"[on comms] Where is the cowardly wretch?"
"Here is the coordinates. Now how about my payment?"
"You'll have your payment when I have Silvo. I'm sending two ships." - ―Pocket and Brutus
Pokkit contacts Brutus to report on Silvo's whereabouts.
Upon reaching Lanupa, the Skeleton Crew discovered that Skull Ridge Mountain—the location of Captain Rennod's Lair—had been transformed[5] into Skull Ridge Mountain Hotel & Spa.[21] To infiltrate Rennod's hideout, Silvo bribed the hotelier and assumed the identity of Professor Umiam Gorelox, while his young companions posed as the "Most Wise Elders." While checking in, Silvo was spotted by the bounty hunter Pokkit. Suspecting she might alert Brutus to his presence, he attempted to warn the Skeleton Crew younglings about an approaching crew of murderous pirates. However, they were too preoccupied with a pillow fight to take the threat seriously. When questioned about why the crew was mad at him and why Pokkit hated him, Silvo dismissed their inquiries as idiotic.[5]
The Skeleton Crew split into two teams to search for the lair. Meanwhile, Pokkit contacted Brutus to claim her bounty and transmitted the coordinates to Lanupa. In response, Brutus informed her that he would be dispatching two ships to capture the runaway prisoner. As the search continued, Lanupan security guards grew suspicious of "Umiam Gorelox" and began tracking him, forcing the crew to flee. They eventually reached the Mud Pits, where they discovered a hidden well they believed would lead to Rennod's lair. At the same time, two transports—one larger and one smaller—emerged from hyperspace over the planet. As two[5] Lanupan security vessels[8] glided to flank the larger transport, the smaller ship ambushed and destroyed them from behind. With the security forces eliminated, the pirate ships descended onto the spa's landing pad.[5]
Beef, Gunter, and other pirates in the company of Pokkit and security officers
When the pirates launched their attack, the Lanupan security guards—who were pursuing Silvo and the children—were instructed to hurry up and capture the fugitive as soon as possible to return to the surface immediately. Meanwhile, a pirate subgroup, including First Mate Gunter and Beef, descended underground. With Pokkit at his side, Gunter gunned down a security grunt.[5] The man, his[8] chest pierced by a blaster bolt, was sucked into a trap and impaled on ceiling-mounted pikes.[5] Other guards, however, had their lives spared and accompanied the pirates during their chase.[22] Gunter screamed Silvo's name as the fugitive reached a chamber filled with toxic acid. When the Skeleton Crew disabled the trap, they descended further, finally reaching the lair. Since SM-33 had gained access to the trap system, Silvo had it refill the chamber with acid. As the liquid poured in, the pirates screamed, with Gunter once again calling out Silvo's name.[5] However, he survived unscathed and. together with Pokitt, soon returned to the surface.[6] In the meantime, Silvo challenged Skeleton Crew Captain Fern under the Pirate's Code. When[5] the girl[2] yielded, SM-33 recognized him as its new captain and—following his orders—attempted to arrest the younglings, who ultimately managed to evade capture by triggering a trap that sent them sliding outside.[5]
Apprehension of Silvo
- "Don't move. You're not going anywhere. Oh, we've got a very special cabin in our ship all ready for you, Silvo."
"I was coming to find you. Down there is the biggest pile of loot you will ever lay your eye on."
"Save it, Silvo. You're going straight to Captain Brutus. Let's go." - ―Gunter and Silvo during the latter's apprehension
Beef and a Weequay seize Silvo amid a deactivated SM-33 and a crowd of on-lookers.
As Captain Brutus' crew loitered around the hotel, arresting several security guards, Silvo emerged from an access hatch, adorned in Tak Rennod's jewelry. He moved addressed the hotelier, Bubbles, the bellhops, and various guests, completely unaware of Gunter lurking behind him. The First Mate raised his blaster, taking his former captain at gunpoint. Silvo, caught off guard, attempted to plead his case, but before he could get far, he was seized by Beef and a Weequay.[5]
As Beef and his companion prepared to haul him away per Gunter's orders, Silvo called out to SM-33, instructing it to attack the pirates, despite having only promised to cut them in. His defense plan, however, failed instantly, as the moment the droid emerged through the access hatch, it was disabled by a ion blast. The pirates pressed forward, tightening their grip on Silvo. Just then, Pokkit approached Silvo and put her arm on him, leaving a smooch on his cheek and saying it had been nice to come across him. Suddenly, a New Republic X-wing squadron roared into view. A Quarren crew member spotted them first, quickly warning Gunter. Wasting no time, the First Mate issued the order to retreat to their two transports.[6]
Trial of Silvo
- "Wait! Wait! What of equal time? Right of Last Appeal. So says the Pirate's Code."
- ―Chaelt, in defense of former Captain Silvo
The Trial of Silvo
The trial took place aboard the pirate frigate, where the crew gathered upon their return. Captain Brutus, who served as the judge, sat on a throne-like chair with a plasma hourglass on the armrest. Beside him stood Chaelt and the Keteerian Snobbius Snee. Snee, overseeing the trial, announced that Brutus was about to pronounce the verdict. The crowd erupted in applause upon hearing that Captain Silvo was found guilty and sentenced to death by airlock. Silvo looked to Chaelt,[6] who hesitated before finally speaking.[18] An elderly woman suddenly shouted, stopping the applause and invoking the Pirate's Code, which guaranteed equal time and the Right of Last Appeal. The crowd fell silent as Brutus turned to Snee, who agreed that the appeal must be honored. Brutus then struck the hourglass, marking the start of Silvo's allotted time.[6]
Silvo's intitial silence concentrated on him the focus on the pirates,[18] with one shouting for him to "open his glob." Instead of addressing his guilt, Silvo shifted to the crew's hardships, speaking about hunger and scarcity. His words drew mixed reactions: one pirate asked what he meant, another called for his execution, and a third dismissed his speech as a desperate plea. Silvo then asked how long they had been hungry, surprising the same pirate who had urged him to speak. When he tried to continue, Brutus interrupted, claiming a convict's words were worthless. Silvo countered by pointing to the still-running plasma in the hourglass. Turning back to the crew, he declared they were all starving because credits were always scarce. Continuing his thought, he then asked everyone to imagine a place where credits were unlimited, intriguing two pirates. He turned to the Quarren Glerb, suggesting[11] he[9] could buy an ocean instead of a glow-weed plantation. Glerb admitted that "would be something." Silvo then addressed the human Kona, apologizing for failing[6] her[18] and insisting she deserved a fleet of her own. Skeptical about his words, Kona asked where the trick was, but Silvo assured her there was none—only fresh Old Republic credits. He pulled out a coin and flipped it, catching the crew's attention. The Nikto Vane eyed it and confirmed it looked identical to the credits used by younglings in Starport Borgo. Silvo agreed, adding that Tak Rennod had believed so, too. Brutus interjected, stating that Rennod was dead. Rather than argue, Silvo began singing a shanty about Rennod's fate and his alleged plundering of At Attin. The crew joined in, and when they failed to complete the stanza, Kona quickly supplied the lyrics, so that they could finish the song.[6]
After the singalong, Gunter asked if Silvo truly believed the myths about At Attin. Instead of answering directly, Silvo suggested Brutus had made a fine First Mate and urged the crew to follow him instead, promising them the entire galaxy. When the hourglass ran out, Gunter and Kona seized the defendant and dragged him to the judge. Brutus hauled Silvo to the airlock, pressing him against the glass to watch trash being ejected into space. He warned that if At Attin—where he agreed to set course using Silvo's coordinates—held no real treasure, Silvo would share the trash's fate. Thus, the execution was postponed until they reached the legendary planet.[6]
Arrival at At Attin
- "This is At Attin? It's a toxic maelstrom. Is this right, Chaelt?"
"Position's correct, cap'n." - ―Brutus and Chaelt over At Attin
As the pirate frigate emerged from hyperspace over At Attin, Brutus strode across the bridge to the viewport. One glance at a green gas giant with flashing lightning bolts led him to conclude they were nowhere near At Attin and had instead arrived at a toxic maelstrom. After Chaelt, seated at the navicomputer, confirmed their position, Brutus noticed that a maelstrom of such magnitude would obliterate any ship attempting to breach it. Subsequently, he grabbed a chained Silvo by the arm and pulled him forward, declaring that the destination they had reached did not resemble to him a treasure planet at all. Therefore, he ordered the airlock to be prepared, deciding that the previously postponed death sentence would be carried out after all now that At Attin had apparently rutned out to be nothing but a myth. As two pirates stepped forward to seize him, Silvo called Brutus "stupid" before calling the rest of the crew "fools." He insisted that the gas giant was only a camouflage. Calling on SM-33, he had the droid cite Tak Renno's datalog, which described the treasure planet as being concealed within an endless storm. Roaming among the crew as they gazed at the giant, he bet his life on At Attin being hidden inside—a bet Brutus accepted. Despite Silvo volunteering to fly in himself, the captain preferred to send out another volunteer.[11]

Silvo and Brutus served as captains around 9 ABY.
During the New Republic Era, when the human Silvo was the captain of the crew,[1] the Shistavanen Brutus served as his First Mate.[6] Conversely, when Brutus became captain, the human[5] cyborg[16] Gunter served as his First Mate.[5] Gunter retained his position after Silvo regained his function by killing Brutus.[11] During the Invasion of At Attin, he commanded the frigate while Silvo coordinated the action from the planet. At that time, the human Kona and the Nikto Vane were in charge of their respective assault teams.[3] In addition, the Keteerian Snobbius Snee served as the overseer of Silvo's trial under Captain Brutus.[6] Chaelt[11]—a human female[18]—was, in turn, responsible for operating a navicomputer.[11]
A crew consisting of many different sentient species, Silvo's pirates had several Quarrens in their ranks, such as Glerb, who was saving up for[6] his[9] own glow-weed plantation, and another Quarren.[6] The remaining species included Grans (Pax), Ishi Tibs (Benjar Pranic, an Ishi Tib), Klatooinians (a helmeted pirate),[12] Shydopps,[11] Snivvians (Pascoe), Warthogs (a Warthog alien),[1] as well as Weequays (Sweeda) and other humanoids (Beef). The pirates also briefly utilized a pirate droid, SM-33.[11]

Behind the scenes
Canonical debut
- "I've got a soft spot for— for pirate movies. Having worked on the first three of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, it was sort of fun to see some of those classic elements. Boarding tubes and kind of 17th-century–looking flitlock weapons incorporated into this."
- ―John Knoll, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew visual effect supervisor
Vane (Marti Matulis), Gunter (Jaleel White), Brutus (Fred Tatasciore, Stephen Oyoung), Pax (Mike Estes), and Chaelt (Dale Soules) as identified by Entertainment Weekly
Silvo's pirates made their canonical debut in the live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, appearing in the two premiere episodes, "This Could Be a Real Adventure"[1] and "Way, Way Out Past the Barrier",[2] which aired on December 2, 2024.[24]
Before the premiere of the show, Silvo had been first portrayed in a LEGO set, 75374 The Onyx Cinder, revealed by the German store Müller.[25] Brutus, Chaelt, Gunter, and Pax were first identified by Entertainment Weekly on September 18, 2024.[26]
Inspiration and development
- "There was always a richer, more complex layer to the internal politics of the pirates, which was fascinating, but it became a thing where it's like, we literally don't have time to get into all of those stories."
"It's fun because it kind of exists there as this residual layer that just makes it feel weirdly lived-in. There's this moment where Jod is just staring at that motherly pirate and they have this moment, and I remember seeing online that people were thinking, 'Is he using a mind trick on her?' And it's like, 'No, they just know each other really well." - ―Jon Watts and Christopher Ford on the dynamics between the pirates
Pirates Brutus, Silvo, and SM-33 as seen on a Star Wars: Skeleton Crew promotional poster
Jon Watts, the showrunner of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, cited classic LucasArts games, particularly Monkey Island, as an inspiration for the show's portrayal of pirates. He aimed to blend its adventurous humor with Star Wars's established take on piracy, creating a fresh yet familiar dynamic within the franchise.[26] While pirates added levity, Watts emphasized their role in reinforcing the series' mature themes, despite its young protagonists. He described the show as embodying the spirit of classic Amblin films, where characters face real danger—being "fried, blasted, or even eaten."[27] Executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were keen on expanding this aspect of the universe,[26] ensuring consistency in its portrayal.[27]
Co-creator Christopher Ford emphasized the lawlessness that emerged in the galaxy after the fall of the Empire as a setting that provided an opportunity to explore the resurgence of piracy in a post-Imperial era. He also noticed that pirates had been a recurring element throughout Star Wars history, frequently mentioned in relation to characters like Han Solo and depicted in various animated series.[26] Though time constraints prevented deeper exploration of pirate backstories, Watts and Ford expressed interest in developing them further. One example of subtle world-building was the dynamics between Silvo and Chaelt, which sparked speculation about a mind trick despite being simply a sign of their deep familiarity with each other.[13]
Jaleel White (Gunter), Stephen Oyoung (Brutus), and a performance artist (an Ishi Tib) on set
The series drew inspiration from classic pirate archetypes,[28] including pirate movies from the '30s[29] and notably Treasure Island's Long John Silver, shaping Silvo's characterization as a morally ambiguous figure rather than a straightforward villain, like Captain Hook. His actions throughout the series aligned with traditional pirate traits, such as self-interest, opportunism, and deception. The creators deliberately avoided a redemption arc, setting him apart from conventional hero narratives.[28]
Director David Lowery recalled that Watts had pitched Star Wars: Skeleton Crew as a story about "kids lost in the Star Wars universe" with "a bunch of pirates," which immediately resonated with him due to his recent work on a Peter Pan movie. He even drew a parallel between SM-33 and "Smee." Upon learning that Jude Law—his Peter Pan Captain Hook—would star in the series seemed like revisiting his previous project.[30] Visual effect supervisor John Knoll, a veteran of Pirates of the Caribbean, enjoyed integrating classic pirate tropes—such as boarding tubes and flintlock-style weapons—into the Star Wars setting.[23]
