- "Tak Rennod's the most infamous pirate the galaxy's ever known. For years, he roamed the skies, plundering, terrorizing whole star systems. Anything he wanted… he took it. The story goes, he was after the treasure of At Attin aboard the mysterious ship the Onyx Cinder when he just… [blows air sharply] disappeared. Crew, ship. All."
- ―Silvo recounting Tak Rennod's history
Tak Rennod was a legendary dread pirate captain who went down in history as the most infamous pirate in the galaxy by the New Republic Era. Obsessed with finding the planet At Attin, which allegedly yielded infinite supplies of Old Republic credits, Rennod roamed space aboard the Onyx Cinder along with his crew and pirate droid SM-33, seeking to discover the isolated world. Suspecting an imminent mutiny, the captain preemptively locked his crew members out of the controls, causing them to die during the crash landing on At Attin after he was betrayed by his first mate and fatally stabbed by his concubine.
Remembered as the most infamous pirate, Tak Rennod was integral to pirate lore, with his name figuring prominently in mild expletives and pirate songs. Around 9 ABY, Captain Silvo and the four youthful Skeleton Crew members sought to reconstruct Rennod's route to At Attin. Having visited the deceased pirate's lair, Silvo promised a crew he had once led to take them to At Attin, while the Skeleton Crew younglings prepared to use Rennod's coordinates on their own to make their way back to their homeworld.
Biography
Overview of life
- "Tak Rennod soared away, away,
Aboard the Onyx Cinder,
And never was he seen again,
For At Attin, he did plunder." - ―A pirate song about Tak Rennod
Tak Rennod was considered the most feared pirate in the history of the galaxy due to being accused of plundering multiple starships with ferocity.[4] He[3] also became obsessed with finding the legendary planet At Attin[4] and had a private lair on Lanupa, where he kept his datalog.[6]
Sometime before 9 ABY,[1] Rennod visited the Fallen Sanctum on the planet At Achrann. There, he and his crew found coordinates to At Attin inscribed on a pillar alongside the coordinates to the remaining Jewels of the Old Republic. However, Rennod killed any of his crew who saw the coordinates to At Attin; in addition, he ordered the pirate droid SM-33 to destroy the inscription on the pillar so that no one else might find the isolated world. Finally, Rennod ordered SM-33 to forget everything he knew about At Attin, and ordered that anyone looking for the planet's treasure to be pulled apart limb from limb.[3]
At some point before arriving on At Attin, Rennod stole the Onyx Cinder, a ship made by At Attin's mint, so he could safely fly back through the Barrier. [7]
On the way to At Attin, Rennod suspected that there would be a crew mutiny. Proving his suspicions correct, the First Mate of the Onyx Cinder challenged him. In addition, Rennod's concubine betrayed him and stabbed him with his own dagger. Prior to his death, however, Rennod had locked the mutinous crew out of the ship's controls. With the crew unable to stop it, the Onyx Cinder crashed into the forested surface of At Attin, killing all who were aboard.[4]
A pirate legend
- "Rennod's ghost. I can't believe it."
- ―Silvo
Over time, Rennod became a prominent figure in pirate lore,[4] his name repeated in pirate songs[6] or used in expletives.[3] Around 9 ABY, four younglings from At Attin—Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB—found the Onyx Cinder wreck and boarded it, unintentionally leaving the planet upon inadvertently starting the vessel.[8] The children found Rennod's droid SM-33, who remained loyal to[9] his[10] one-time owner, unaware that Rennod was long gone. In order to win SM-33 to their cause, Fern claimed to have killed Rennod, so that the droid followed[9] her[11] as his captain from then on. SM-33 took the crew to Borgo Prime, where Wim attempted to pay with At Attin's Old Republic credits in front of Vane and[9] his[12] fellow crew. Although the pirates did not give credence the children's story about At Attin, a story they downplayed as a myth, Captain Brutus had them locked down pending further interrogation.[9] When in the brig, the younglings allied themselves with former Captain Silvo and join their forces in escaping from prison. After Silvo and the kids escape, Silvo found a dagger on a corpse,[13] although he was unaware it belonged to Rennod himself.[4] With the help of astronomer Kh'ymm, they arrived on At Achrann, which the astronomer had mistaken for At Attin due to the two planets' close similarity.[3] Finally, by utilizing SM-33's memory, they made it to Lanupa, where they accessed Captain Rennod's Lair and data log before splitting up again.[4] While the Skeleton Crew younglings sought to reach At Attin on their own, Silvo was arrested by his former crew, with Captain Brutus conditioning sparing his life on whether At Attin would yield the "eternal treasure". During the trial, when Brutus noted that Rennod was dead, Silvo started singing a shanty about the deceased captain, and other pirates joined in, knowing the lyrics by heart.[6]
Equipment
Tak Rennod utilized a lightsaber, which he kept in his lair on the planet Lanupa. When the lair was discovered by the pirate Silvo and the youthful Skeleton Crew members, the lightsaber was briefly used by Wim before Silvo took it as his own, dragging it through the Force.[6] In addition, Rennod possessed a giant dagger that he was ultimately killed with by his concubine, and had a symbol.[4]
Captain Rennod traversed the galaxy aboard his ship, the Onyx Cinder.[4] He had a pirate droid, SM-33, who remained loyal to the captain long after his death, unaware that his owner had in fact been killed.[9]
Behind the scenes
Tak Rennod was first mentioned in the Disney+ live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Originally alluded to by SM-33 as his former captain, Rennod's last name was first pronounced in the forth episode of the series, "Can't Say I Remember No At Attin", where Silvo used it as part of a mild expletive upon seeing what he thought was At Attin. Rennod's connection to SM-33's one-time captain—and much less their being one and the same—was not revealed until the fifth episode, "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates", where Rennod was also first identified as "Tak". In addition, the same episode presented Rennod as a holographic recording, in which he was voiced by Sam Witwer.[source?]

Notes and references
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition,
"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well.
SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
