- "The coordinates will be hidden in the Captain's datalog."
- ―SM-33, about Tak Rennod's datalog
Tak Rennod's hologram recorded in his datalog
Datalogs,[1] also known as logs,[2] were a kind of data storage device utilized by pirate captains.
A figure well-known in pirate lore, Captain Tak Rennod, kept his own datalog, in which he hid the coordinates to the legendary planet At Attin,[1] a Jewel of the Old Republic yielding massive supplies of Old Republic credits.[3] Before his death, Rennod had left the datalog in his lair on Lanupa.[1] Around 9 ABY,[4] the lair was penetrated by former pirate Captain Silvo and four younglings from[1] the Skeleton Crew,[5] who hailed from At Attin. With the droid SM-33's help, Silvo accessed Rennod's datalog and obtained the coordinates to the planet.[1]
Behind the scenes
The datalog made its canonical debut in "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates," the fifth episode of the live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,[1] which was released on December 24, 2024.[6]
Before Skeleton Crew, datalogs were presented in the non-canon game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga as a form of physical media that could hold a written message. The astromech droid R2-R9 was tasked with delivering a datalog to a spatula-wielding Gungan in the city of Otoh Gunga on the planet Naboo. R2-R9 discovered that the many slopes of the city did not agree with its treads and asked another individual to deliver the message, which was from the spatula's original owner and asked for its return so that they could cook fish. The message was delivered, and the Gungan agreed to return the spatula, which he had been using as a slug-beetle swatter.[7]
In Legends, the datalog is a merchant's electronic catalogue.

- ↑ Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition,
"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well.
SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
