"I am aboard an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer. Built at the Kuat Drive Shipyards. It possesses many useful systems and capabilities."
―The Scourge[28]

The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer was a model of Imperial-class Star Destroyer in the service of the Imperial Navy. A wedge-shaped capital ship manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, it bristled with weapons emplacements, assault troops, boarding craft, and TIE fighter series starfighters. In the era of the Galactic Empire, its command bridge was staffed by the finest crewmen in the navy.

At first, Star Destroyers were deployed to sectors and systems caught in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, where they would crush any signs of sedition. During the Galactic Civil War the Destroyer's role changed to hunting down high value Rebel targets and bases. They fought in notable battles such as the Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor. The Imperial II-class Star Destroyer was a derivative of the Imperial I-class.

The Imperial I-class Star Destroyer was a class of capital ship used by the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy, and was one of the most powerful ships fielded by the Empire. The Imperial I had a long, arrowhead-shaped hull, with a towering, heavily armored superstructere.[1] With a length of 1,600.52 meters, or 5,251 ft 1 in,[2] the massive Imperial I-class Star Destroyer[1] was essentially a flying city.[7] Manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, the Imperial I-class cost 150,000,000 credits.[1] Imperial I-class vessels had a width 985.17 meters (3,232 ft 2 in) and a height of 455.40 meters (1,461 ft 3 in).[2] The iconic[1] vessels where the chief warship used by the Empire,[14] and they where possibly the most common warship in the Imperial Fleet,[1] with 25,000 Imperial-class Star Destroyers in service,[29] including Imperial IIs.[11] Keeping with the Empire's habit of favoring muted colors whenever possible,[30] the hull of the Imperial-class was painted in whitish gray.[14]

To complement its impressive crew size, every Imperial-class vessel carried consumables for 2 years,[22] with its liquid stores and holds for raw materials being located near its bow.[8] The ship had a heavily armored,[1] multi-tiered habitable superstructure,[2] with crew barracks, gunnery crew quarters,[11] meeting rooms, training areas, and cell blocks were located in the vessels second 'step',[31] along with the typical officer's recreation station.[2] Imperial Is had four gradually upsloping smaller 'steps' eventually leading to the ships 'neck' which connected it to its upper bridge section, deflector shield generators, and communications array.[31] The medical substation was usually located on the third 'step'.[2] On the "side" of the ship existed the port lateral umbilical restocking vestibule.[11]

In addition, ISDs also had multiple tactical rooms, including a most secure room, with battle analysis holotables that could access Republic and Imperial databases. They had a tall castured stool at the massive table with a computer with complex controls, including a keypad, and a holoprojector. The most secure rooms had security cams which would be turned off if the proper codes were entered[19] Imperial I-class vessels had commander offices with desks,[32] a cabin for the commander of the vessel[12] or owner? with a holoprojector and a viewport,[33] a command conference room,[21] a medbay for prisoners,[33] a pilot's mess,[32] at least one escape pod,[20] a preparation room[12] a standard medbay equipped two 2-1B surgical droids that could be used as an examination room, and an onboard library that typically did not include an exobio package,[21] and officers for crew officers with door, and a screen on the desk in the offices.[34] In addition to the main bridge the ships had an auxiliary bridge.[24] Crew quarters for enlisted personnel was located on the port side of the ship, in the ship's trench.[2]

They had long-range sensors[1] that included a fore starboard active sensor array pallet in the ship's 'trench',[11] and passive sensors.[12] Usually, it additionally had dorsal sensor pallets.[2] Its sensors could detect energy concentrations, power usage, sensor emission,[21] and Cronau radiation emissions.[19] They had antiresonance plates next to a subsidiary reactor that powered its turbolasers, and towards the front of the ship liquid stores and raw materials were stored.[8] The ship had corridors with metal-mesh floors and a ventilation system that had a faint hissing sound.[24]

The distinctive dome on the ventral hull of the ship contained the powerful Sienar Fleet Systems I-a2b solar ionization reactor[10] to give energy to the ship's primary systems, including propulsion, weapons and hyperdrive;[7] this star-like core was able to give enough energy for all the ship's systems, with a sizable reserve.[10] Well shielded by durasteel and carbonite, the solar ionization reactor gave the vessel enough power to accomplish any task at hand.[7] The vessel had a HoloNet transceiver[7] and internal communications.[21] On the underside of the ship was a high-frequency communication transmission station.[2]

Hangars

The main hangar of an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer

Imperial I-class vessels had two major hangars. The first was a main ventral attack hangar, located toward the middle of the ship. The main hangar was used for landing craft and TIE fighters. The main hangar was connected to the main TIE landing bay. From the main tie landing bay, ties could be transferred to service and fueling bays or the launch bay. TIE bombers were kept in a separate compartment to limit the impact if their bombs went off. The Tie bomber hangar was located more towards the stern of the ship and was connected to the main hangar by a set of armored doors. ISD's also had a small forward backup hangar for shuttles and high-ranking officials. In addition to their two more prominent hangars,[8] they also had several ancillary hangars equipped with spotlights.[19] There were several different slots in the hangar bays of an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, including spots Number One, Two, Three, Four and Six. It was a clear violation of Imperial Navy protocol to have the captain's shuttle in a spot lower than Number Two.[12]

Crew requirements

"This ship usually runs with a crew of thousands. We've got 200 rebels. None of which have even set foot on a Star Destroyer."
―Han Solo, to Princess Leia, on the Harbinger.[17]

Imperial-class Star Destroyers had 37,360 crew on board— 9,235 officers, 27,850 enlisted personnel and 275 gunners.[7] Imperial Is also carried a full-scale army[5] of 9,700 stormtroopers.[14] There were multiple different positions of crew aboard an Imperial I, including chief hanger master, helm officer, tech, sensor officer,[12] chief gunnery officer,[34] and forward turbolaser crew.[21] As there were thousands of officers on board every Imperial I, the rigid hierarchy of the Empire saw large numbers of lieutenants composing the junior ranks of the command personnel.[7] A Internal Affairs officer was stationed aboard the ship to scan the crew for signs of disloyalty and sedition, as well as interrogate any captured prisoners.[24] When the Harbinger was captured by the Rebel Alliance, a force of 200 rebels was used to crew the vessel.[17] "guards"[24] "Courier droids"[24]

Armament

The Imperial-class Star Destroyer bristled with weapons emplacements, giving them devastating firepower[8] and a well-earned reputation for power.[1] Their main offensive systems on the vessel where included 60 Taim & Bak XX-9 heavy turbolaser batteries located on the dorsal and ventral hull of the ship. Although the vessel was used mainly for capital ship to capital ship combat, for targeting smaller starfighters, it was equipped with a LeGrange computer-assisted targeting system. It additionally possessed 60 Borstel NK-7 ion cannons, which could neutralize a chosen ship without dismantling it.[10]

It was also equipped with ten[10] powerful[36] heavy[1] Phylon Q7 tractor beam projectors on the outer hull[10] usually equipped with jamming fields.[21] Some of its tractor beam projectors were arranged in a forward pursuit tractor beam array at the front of the ship,[11] and others were located ventrally.[2] Once Imperial I disabled a vessel with its ion cannons, it would often use its ion cannons to draw the incapacitated ship into its docking bay.[10] Its tractor beams could also be used to help friendly vessels into its hangar bay.[32] The ship also featured six dual heavy turbolaser turrets, two quad heavy turbolasers, three triple medium turbolasers, and two medium turbolasers. The Imperial I-class also featured two dual heavy ion cannon turrets that lined the dorsal superstructure flanking the command tower.[11] "Twelve hundred kilometers was well beyond the turbolasers usual range, at least for something carrying any decent armor"[21] At both "ends" of the Star Destroyer existed an aft point defense laser cannon.[11]

While Imperial I-class Star Destroyers typically had a tractor beam targeting array between its bridge deflector shields,[13] some Imperial Is such as the Conquest,[37] Devastator,[23] and Harbinger.[38] where upgraded.[23] However, an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer with a tractor beam targeting array participated in the Battle of Endor.[39]

By far the heaviest weapons on the ship were the six turbolaser turrets positioned alongside the two ion turrets. With a diameter of 50 meters, each turbolaser was capable of ripping through heavy armor and overloading shields. Although it was difficult to hit small, fast-moving craft, even a glancing blow would destroy them.[8] Despite the fact that many Imperial Is had double heavy turbolaser turrets, starships of the seventh fleet had octuple barbette turbolasers, like Imperial IIs.[source?] While the armament aboard an Imperial I-class was formidable, its weapons did have some blind spots that allowed small vessels to destroy it.[1]

Shielding and armor

"They're not even attempting to attack our forward shield generators."
―A officer, on the Harbinger[17]

Imperial I-class Star Destroyers had a titanium reinforce alusteel hull,[10] and thus where heavily armored[5] and had a well-earned reputation for resiliency.[1] In addition to their heavy armor,[5] the vessel was equipped with multiple deflector shields.[11][6] On the underside of the very tip of the Imperial I was the navigational deflector generator[11] and the vessel's had a ventral hull deflector shield projector.[2] It had two KDY ISD-72x shield generator domes located inside[10] multipurpose geodesic sensor domes[2] on the dorsal surface of the bridge tower. These easily targeted globes were an obvious target for any assailant, although any attacker must first prevail against the ship's formidable array of weapons.[10] Its deflector shields gave the ship heavy[1] and dense shielding.[5] It shields were strong enough to withstand a collision with a GR-75 medium transport with no damage to the hull.[40]

Complement

TIE/ln fighters where stored aboard Imperial I-class Star Destroyers

An Imperial-class Star Destroyer carried an impressive complement of starfighters, consisting of a wing of seventy-two TIE fighter series starfighters, divided into six squadrons. It typically carried fourty-eight Tie/ln starfighters, twelve TIE/sa bombers and twelve TIE/IN interceptors[15] or TIE Boarding Craft.[8] They would occasionally carry a squadron of twelve TIE/d defenders,[21] It also carried many attack craft,[8] landing craft, landing barges, ultility vehicles and shuttles,[1] including eight Lambda-class T-4a shuttles. The Imperial-class carried fifteen Delta-class stormtrooper transports, five assault gunboats, twelve Sentinel-class landing craft, a variable number of GAT-12 Skipray Blastboats, and at least one Gamma-class assault shuttle.[7] Imperial I-class Star Destroyers also carried numerous ground vehicles,[1] including twenty AT-AT walkers, thirty AT-ST or AT-DP walkers, and fifteen Imperial Troop Transports.[14] While Thrawn's forces where fighting against Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren at the extragalactic planet Peridea[18] around 9 ABY,[41] the Chimaera deployed LAAT/le patrol gunships from its hanger.[18] When the Harbinger was captured by the Rebel Alliance, the YT-1300 light freighter Millennium Falcon[17] and T-65 X-wing starfighters where docked aboard the ship.[16]

Propulsion systems

Powering the Destroyer were seven main engine units: 3 KDY Destroyer-I ion engines and four Cygnus Spaceworks Gemon-4 ion engines for emergency use.[6] It's seven engines[13] could accelerate to speeds of up to 975 kph (606 mph)[5] or 60 megalight per hour.[4] The Imperial I-class was equipped with a primary hyperdrive of Class 2, and a backup hyperdrive of Class 8, which utilized a navicomputer,[14] and alluvial dampers;[12]

Conning tower

The distinctive elevated hexagonal conning tower of the Imperial I-class gave its commanding officer an unhampered view of the ship down to its prow, and housed the vessels main command bridge as well as its primary computer controls, protected by twin ISD-72x shield generators.[10] Located atop the tower was a tractor beam targeting array.[13] The command bridge itself featured two elongated[42] data pits[19] set below floor level, whose walls were lined with monitors and control panels.[42] The crew pits could be used for private holocommunications[19] and had stairs leading up to the higher level.[21] In addition, six more duty station consoles were mounted freely in each pit. The superior officers stood on a[42] command walkway[19] surrounding the pits at the normal deck height. All the consoles were aligned perpendicular to the walkway. A small room behind[42] and below[19] the main bridge existed separated by a single blast door, which had access to advanced communications equipment and a holographic imaging table.[42] This arrangement was considered beneficial for denoting rank hierarchy within the ship.[43] The command bridge had trapezoidal viewports,[19] a bridge speaker, a monitor that could display sensor recordings possibly the sensor station, a turbolift in the aft brige[21] and a bridge comm station for outgoing transmissions[32]

Role

Despite being powerful and intimidating vessels, Imperial I-class Star Destroyers possessed several weaknessess.

Despite being powerful and intimidating vessels, Imperial I-class Star Destroyers possessed several weaknessess.

Imperial I-class Star Destroyers were the considered "face of the Imperial Navy".[1] They were used by the Galactic Empire to maintain order and wage war in the galaxy. They were also used to hunt down high-priority targets, instill fear in civilian populations, and attack centers of rebel operations.[14] The imposing and terrifying vessels were designed as much for intimidation as for ship-to-ship combat.[1] Compared to the Venator-class, their role as a starfighter carrier was lacking, with a greater focus on the ability to sunder planets.[2] and as such were capable of taking an entire planet unaided or laying a planet to waste with a powerful orbital bombardment. A battlegroup anchored by an Imperial I-class was able to easily pacify an entire sector.[1]

Despite being larger and more powerful[11] than their predecessor, the Ventator-class, Imperial I-class Star Destroyers proved less effective against skilled rebel pilots than the Venator-class had been against droid starfighters. During the Battle of Hoth, the vessels were easily disabled, allowing the rebel transport to escape, and during the Battle of Endor, rebel pilots exploited the weaknesses of in their shield generators and exposed bridges,[14] and destroyed at least on Imperial I-class, the Devastator.[23] In addition, their weapons had blind spots, including one in the aft quarter, where its cannons could not reach. By exploiting these blind spots, a skilled pilot could fly a starfighter or small gunboat through the defenses, and deliver a killing blow of bombs and torpedoes. However, experienced commanders knew about these weaknesses and would deploy their focus to minimize the vulnerabilities.[1]

History

The Sovereign and two other Imperial I-class Star Destroyers during the invasion of Mon Cala

During the Clone Wars (22 BBY-19 BBY), between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems,[26] the Galactic Republic's naval forces used the versatile[36] Venator-class Star Destroyers as battleships,[14] starfighter carriers and troop transports,[36] and they where one of the first examples of the wedge-shape design philosophy that would later feature in Imperial-class vessels.[14] Immediately following Palpatine's declaration of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, work began for a new warship that will embody this era[2] per Palpatine's decree of a massive military buildup.[26] Palapinte orders KDY to construct a formidable fleet, the center of which is the Imperial I[44] Kuat Drive Yards is giving the exclusive contract to produce new Star Destroyers for the Empire, and reworks the Imperator-class Star Destroyer into the[26] Imperial I-class.[2] Building off the strengths of the Venator-class,[36] the Galactic Empire developed the Imperial-I-class Star Destroyer.[14] The great shipyards of the galaxy that were fired up during the Clone Wars remained lit well into the Age of the Empire. The enormous construction facilities at Kuat, Corellia, Ringo Vinda, Fondor, and elsewhere were converted from civilian graving docks into military starports capable of churning out Imperial-class Star Destroyers.[11]

Imperial I-class vessels, including Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's Sovereign would see action during the invasion of Mon Cala[45] in 18 BBY.[26] Tarkin's Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, the Executrix, participated in a battle at Agaris[46] in that same year. In 17 BBY,[26] the Executrix took part in the Salient Campaign against Saw Gerrera's Partisans,[33] and in 14 BBY,[26] it saw action in the Obroa-skai system incident. In 11 BBY,[26] the Imperial I Ultimatum played a part in the Gorse Conflict.[47] By 9 BBY,[48] Kuat Drive Yards had stopped manufacturing the Imperial I-class with the production of the Devastator, the final ship of its class.[11] In 5 BBY,[49] the Lawbringer, an Imperial I-class commanded by the Imperial Security Bureau's Alexsandr Kallus fought against the rebels in a mission to free Wookiee prisoners, but where unsuccessful in stopping the Spectres from freeing them.[42]

Around that same year, Kuat Drive Yards began production of the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, the next-generation successor to the Imperial I. While the outward appearance of the Imperial II-class was nearly identical to that of the Imperial I, there were several notable differences. The Imperial I featured a Communications tower instead of a tractor beam targeting array,[1] and the Imperial II traded the Imperial I's turbolasers and ion cannons for octuple turbolaser barbettes,[1] giving it greater firepower.[2] The Imperial II also featured a reinforced hull and more advanced deflector shields.[1] When introduced, the new Imperial IIs begin to slowly supplant the Imperial I-class.[2] In 4 BBY,[26] the Sovereign was destroyed during the Action at Mustafar.[50]

Action in the early rebellion

Thrawn and the Chimeara

In 11 BBY, Thrawn is assigned the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Chimaera.[26] It sees heavy action during this period, including during Nightswan's campaign (11 BBY-2 BBY). And in 2 BBY, the Chimaera saw role in battle in Sector 56 and in the mission to Batuu.

Battle of Scarif

The Persecutor crashs into the Intimidator

The Persecutor crashs into the Intimidator

In 1 BBY,[26] two Imperial I-class Star Destroyers,[40] the Persecutor and the Intimidator where stationed above the Golan M3185 space station Shield Gate oribiting the Mid Rim planet Scarif. They were placed there in order to protect the Imperial Center of Military Research, which contained the technical schematics for the first Death Star.[11] Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor led a strike team to steal the Death Star plans. In orbit around the planet a fleet commanded by Admiral Raddus arrived, anchored by the MC75 Star Cruiser Profundity.[25]

While the strike team on the ground tried to recover the plans, the rebel task force in space was taking heavy losses from the Persecutor and the Intimidator. In order to draw the TIE fighters away from the shield gate, Raddus decided to attack the Star Destroyers head-on. The Y-wings of Gold Squadron disabled the Persecutor's already weakened systems, leaving it dead in space. Then the Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvette Lightmaker, which had previously been damaged and was taken out of the fight to cover the line of retreat, rammed into the Persecutor, causing it to crash into the Imperial flagship Intimidator. Both vessels fell onto the shield gate, allowing the team on the ground to transmit the Death Star plans. As the Profundity prepared to retreat with the plans, Darth Vader's personal Star Destroyer, the Devastator, emerged to cut off the Profundity's line of retreat. The Devastator's elite gunners quickly began to destroy the Raddus's forces, and began to close in on the Profundity. As the Devastator began to close in, the Profundity launched the CR90 corvette Tantive IV, which was carrying the Death Star plans.[25]

Chasing the plans

The Tantive IV set course for the planet Tatooine in order to locate Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, a hyperdrive substem malfunctioned, which caused the Devastator to track them to the planet and catch them in orbit. The Devastator began to fire on the Tantive IV, and the corvette's shields were breached, damaging its main reactor. Captain Raymus Antilles ordered to reactor to be shut down in order to avoid being destroyed. The Devastator then used its tractor beams to pull the now disabled Tantive IV into its hangar bay.[25] However, princess Leia had stored the plans in the droid R2-D2 which jettisoned.[51] To prevent their targeting accuracy from going down, the Devastator's gunners did not fire on the escape pod carrying the droids.[34]

Legacy

The Imperial-class Star Destroyer was a harbinger of the larger vessels that would serve in the Galactic Empire,[11] such as the 19,000 kilometer long Executor-class Star Dreadnought.[14] It would ultimately see service in the First Order's Navy thirty years after the Battle of Endor, and would be regarded as a highly respected ship, with many of its design flaws rectified with the construction of the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer, a newer, more powerful vessel based on the Old Empire's dreaded warships[52] that supplanted the Imperial-I on the front lines.[53]

There are some inconsistencies over the armament and length of the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer. Starships and Speeders states that the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer possessed both light and heavy turbolasers, and two different types of ion cannons.[1] However, Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide and Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles do not support different types of ion cannons or light and heavy turbolasers,[11][5] and Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition states that it had 60 Taim & Bak XX-9 heavy turbolaser batteries and 60 Borstel NK-7 ion cannons.[14] This article assumes Starships and Speeders is incorrect. In addition, Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition establishes the length of the Imperial I as 5,250 feet and its crew complement of 9,235 officers,[14] whereas Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles gives a length of 5,249 feet, and a crew complement of 9,200 officers[5] This article assumes Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition rounded its length, and Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles rounded its officer capacity.
