A series of six total dual heavy turbolaser turrets, also referred to as heavy turbolaser defence turrets[2] or simply heavy turbolaser turrets[3] were the heaviest shipboard armament installed aboard Imperial I-class Star Destroyers.
Description
These twin-barreled turbolasers had a diameter of 50 meters and were mounted alongside the flanks of Imperial I-class Star Destroyers, where they served as heavy anti-capital ship weapons. While they were too slow to reliably target fast starfighters, even a glancing hit of these weapons could destroy a small craft. Each of these turbolasers could overload deflector shields or penetrate the hulls of the most heavily armored starships.[3]
Three separate control rooms were used to man the massive weapons: a power feed control room, a targeting room and the firing control itself. These rooms were stacked on top of each other behind a proton-shielded armor plate and each could employ as many as ten crewmembers at once. An intricate system of primary and auxiliary power cells and cooling pumps were located underneath each weapon and helped regulate the extreme power required to fire them, while each turbolaser sat atop a traverse motor that allowed it to rotate.[3]
