"Attack me with all your strength."
"I appreciate your courage, young warrior, I have no quarrel with you."
"Attack me, Jedi!"
"Jedi do not attack the unarmed."
"Yes, you do."

Indara was a human female who joined the Jedi Order as a youngling during the High Republic Era. As a Padawan, she trained under her Jedi Master's tutelage before later attaining the rank of Jedi Knight around 161 BBY. Around the same year, Indara was trapped in the mines of Seswenna during the Farlingan Collapse. Afterward, to recover from the traumatizing experience, she served as a Jedi archivist in the planet Coruscant's Jedi Temple. Around 160 BBY, the Jedi High Council sent Indara to bring Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh—who was traveling the galaxy as a Wayseeker—back to Coruscant. After Indara met Rwoh on the planet Cerifisis and helped the Jedi Master defeat the Strafes pirates plaguing the world, the pair returned to the Jedi Temple.

Rwoh and Indara were tasked with escorting Senator Jakob Garn to Coruscant, who had agreed to provide information on the production of lightsaber nullifier weapons. The pair's attempt to extract him from the planet Thelj was unsuccessful, prompting them to continue their search for the scientist working on the nullifiers by visiting the planets Hynestia, Ingae, and Ruathi. On Ruathi, Indara fought gheriol creatures in a fighting arena, having been kidnapped by underlings working for the weapons dealer Nilsson Summach. After Rwoh and Yorrick rescued her, the trio fled the planet and visited the hideout of Rwoh's former acquaintance, Deva Lompop. Begrudgingly, Lompop gave the group information on the scientist Florinda Jackard, who had been working for Summach to create the lightsaber nullifiers. Indara, Rwoh, and Yorrick's efforts to take Jackard into custody on the planet Pinara proved unsuccessful. Continuing their pursuit, they confronted Jackard and Summach in Summach's private laboratory on the planet Septra. On Septra, Summach's assistant, Grizela, killed her boss for his incompetence during a confrontation between Summach and Rwoh. After the incident, Grizela and Jackard were brought to Coruscant to face justice for their roles in the nullifiers' production. Upon her return, Indara submitted a request to the Jedi Council to become a Wayseeker, wanting to follow in Rwoh's footsteps.

By 148 BBY, Indara had become a Jedi Master and was training a Padawan, Torbin. Often commanding an authoritative presence, the Jedi Master was skilled in several forms of combat, including wielding the Force to protect herself and others. In 148 BBY, she was present on the planet Brendok with the Jedi Master Kelnacca, the Jedi Knight Sol, and Torbin to discover if a vergence of the Force had regenerated life on the world following the Great Hyperspace Disaster. While there, she and Sol tested the twin sisters Verosha "Osha" and Mae-ho "Mae" Aniseya to be potential Padawans after discovering them within a coven of witches led by Mother Aniseya. When Mae-ho tried to prevent Verosha from leaving with the Jedi, Sol rescued her from the fire that happened afterward, bringing her into the Jedi Order as his Padawan afterward when the Jedi—including Indara—departed the world.

At some point after leaving Brendok, Torbin completed his Jedi training under Indara, eventually ascending to the rank of Jedi Master. Around 138 BBY, Indara suggested to the Jedi High Council that Osha's training be ended, though the latter ultimately left the Order on her own. Meanwhile, Mae-ho sought revenge against Indara and the other three Jedi who had been on Brendok for perceived wrongs, though the Jedi had assumed Mae-ho had perished in the Brendok fire the year before. In 132 BBY, Indara fought Mae—now a Sith assassin—on the planet Ueda in a skirmish in Lomi Usqi Noodle Shop. The pair engaged in an extended spar, with the Jedi Master defending herself using the Force as Mae-ho used her knives to attack. However, Indara was ultimately killed by Mae-ho when the assassin stabbed her, as the Jedi had been distracted by acting to save the noodle restaurant's barkeep, Cabuck, from one of Mae's knives.

Following this, the Jedi Knight Yord Fandar and his Padawan, Tasi Lowa, brought Verosha in as a suspect in the murder. However, they ultimately cleared her of suspicion after discovering Mae-ho still lived and had been involved in Torbin's death on the planet Olega. Afterward, the Jedi continued investigating Indara and Torbin's murders and displayed their holograms in the Coruscant Jedi Temple. Meanwhile, Mae-ho continued her quest and sought to fight Kelnacca on the planet Khofar next, though her master, a Sith she knew as the trader Qimir, ultimately killed the Wookiee instead. In the aftermath of the investigation, Rwoh blamed Indara, Torbin, and Kelnacca's deaths on Sol following his death at Verosha's hands. Rwoh further insisted Sol was a rogue Jedi who had murdered his colleagues to prevent the truth of their confrontation with the witches on Brendok years before from coming to light, leaving on official record that Indara and her fellows had conspired to hide the truth—and while true that the group had not told the entire truth, neither did Sol kill his colleagues.

Biography

Jedi training

"My master's last words to me before I became a Jedi Knight were to chastise me for my unkempt robes. So you are correct. I do not have the fond memories of my master that you have of yours."
―Indara to Vernestra Rwoh, about her Jedi Master — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[4]

The human female[4] Indara was born around 186 BBY[2] during the High Republic Era. Days after her birth, she was left at the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant, joining the Jedi Order as an infant. As she grew up, Indara retained no memories of her life before becoming a Jedi[4] and considered Coruscant her homeworld.[1] At some point, she participated in a Gathering on the planet Ilum in which she collected a kyber crystal for her lightsaber in the world's Crystal Cave.[8] Later, Indara trained as a Jedi Padawan under the tutelage of a Jedi Master. As his student, she traveled the galaxy with her Jedi Master, learning about various cultures and their fighting forms and saving endangered tomes.[4]

Indara flew a Jedi Vector (pictured) during her time as a Jedi, though preferred other methods of transport.

Indara flew a Jedi Vector (pictured) during her time as a Jedi, though preferred other methods of transport.

When traveling, Indara's Master often chose utilitarian transport methods such as shuttles and hopper spacecraft for use during their missions. However, Indara also occasionally flew a Jedi Vector[4]—a swift and nimble vessel designed specifically for Jedi use[9]—though she disliked using the starfighters outside combat. Indara's Master regularly berated and belittled her during their training, such as during their lightsaber dueling sessions and when the former felt his apprentice looked unkempt. To please her Master, Indara spent significantly more time sparring and testing her skills with drills in training rooms than her peers. On at least one occasion as a Padawan, Indara fought pirates.[4]

During her time as a Padawan, Indara and her Master traveled extensively, including to the Lake Country of[4] the planet[10] Naboo and the waterfalls of[4] the planet[11] Dalna. Other locations they visited also had natural formations that Indara felt were impressive, including the shifting sands on the astronomical Leonit and the large tree cows on the celestial body Holpern.[4] Around 163 BBY,[12] Indara became aware of the Jedi Annexation Act, a piece of legislation that Galactic Republic Senator Jakob Garn and his allies were proposing in the Galactic Senate. At the time, Indara was focused on her research concerning the cultural relevance of shishi tea to the Kessarine population of the world Eriadu, having been asked for the research by a Jedi Master embarking on a diplomatic mission. As a result, she did not pay much attention to other Jedi's discussions on the piece of legislation. Indara and her Master continued to share a tense relationship until Indara was knighted and rose to the rank of Jedi Knight[4] around 161 BBY.[12]

Farlingan Collapse

"I was in the mines on Seswenna during the Farlingan Collapse. You may not have heard of it. I was there with four other Jedi. I was the only one who survived. It took them a week to find me. We went down there because the miners had been complaining about the work conditions and a lack of safety, holding up production. The Senate asked the Order to get involved, since the mines were crucial to the economies of a few different planets. We were supposed to be there to help keep them safe. Instead we were pinned behind some rubble. The other Jedi died instantly, but my leg was just pinned. And the Force … well, it wasn't much help."

At the request of the Galactic Senate (seal pictured), Indara and four other Jedi were sent to Seswenna to mediate with miners.

Around the same year,[12] Indara, her former Jedi Master,[1] and three other Jedi were sent to[4] the planet[13] Seswenna on a mission. At the request of the Galactic Senate, the group attempted to mediate with the workers in the mines of Seswenna—who had been complaining about their work conditions and lack of safety—to ensure production would resume, as the mines were heavily entwined with the economies of a few planets. However, though the five Jedi attempted to keep the workers safe, during a visit to the mines, they were buried by rubble deep below Seswenna's surface in an event that became known as the Farlingan Collapse.[4]

The four Jedi with Indara died instantly, though she survived with only her leg pinned. Stuck in stifling darkness, Indara listened to the cries of the miners dying around her, growing fainter by the day. Though Indara was able to ease her suffering by drinking from a nearby puddle, she otherwise waited for rescue while enduring excruciating pain, only alleviated by unconsciousness and attempts at meditation. While trapped, Indara envisioned that a Kessurian male wearing temple robes had comforted her.[4]

Eventually, she was rescued by a droid crew after a week had passed. She spent a few weeks in a bacta tank to heal upon returning to Coruscant, missing the remembrance ceremonies for her Jedi colleagues during that time. Upon waking up, Indara had lost confidence in her abilities as a Jedi due to the mental trauma of the incident,[4] which included her Master's abrupt passing.[1] Though she asked after the Kessurian who had been in the mines with her, she was told no individuals of that species had been present. After Indara submitted a request to be reassigned to Coruscant's Jedi Temple, the request was approved, and she was offered the position of a Jedi archivist until she felt ready to return to the mission roster.[4]

Jedi archivist

"I've studied it extensively. I've even written several analyses of the initial Jedi response in the aftermath of the incident on Valo. I've mostly been interested in the initial Emergences and—"
"I only ask because it seems as though the Order was quick to forget the failures of our leadership during that time. And since you're young, I wasn't sure how much you'd been exposed to, even as an archivist."
"Yes, well, I happen to have written my first treatise on the actions of the Order during the Nihil conflict and how the casualties could have been avoided at key junctures."

As an archivist, Indara answered to a supervisor while working in the Jedi Archives, often using the Archives' terminals to complete research requests. Though lauded by other archivists for her skills, Indara regularly brushed off their praise, assuming every kind word from her colleagues was made out of pity. Indara spent time researching the Nihil conflict, in which the Nihil marauders fought against the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. Though particularly interested in the initial Emergences of the Great Hyperspace Disaster[4] of 232 BBY,[11] the Jedi Knight also wrote several analyses on the initial Jedi response to the attack on the Republic Fair on the planet Valo. At another point, Indara drafted a treatise on how the Jedi Order might have avoided more casualties during the Nihil conflict by taking actions at various key junctures in the multi-year struggle. The Jedi Knight learned about Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh and her exploits against the Nihil and in other conflicts afterward, such as the Darnaburny Civil War. Indara also studied the treatises of Jedi Master Imri Cantaros, a renowned Jedi philosopher whom Rwoh had trained. After researching the Nihil conflict, Indara also studied the Great Hyperspace Rush[4] of 383 BBY.[11]

Though several assignments were announced during her year as an archivist, Indara shied away from adding herself to the mission roster, unsure of her skills and preferring to stay in the Jedi Archives. During this time, she researched the Shani species, finding the conflicting narratives about the species' history intriguing. Ahead of an upcoming celebration on the planet Tevu, Indara began researching a battle on Tevu that had taken place when Jedi Master Yaddle had been a Padawan. The archivist was concerned with the redactions and contradictions in the Jedi Archives' reports of the event and resolved to speak with Yaddle about her findings later, as the latter had been involved in the conflict.[4]

Finding a Jedi Master

A new directive

"You want me to go find a Jedi Master? I… wouldn't it be easier to just send her a message to return?"
"The first thing you should know about Vernestra Rwoh is that she is not easily swayed from her path. We have a matter that needs her personal attention, and the timing is urgent."

Around 160 BBY,[12] several recently reported usages of a lightsaber nullifier worried the Jedi High Council due to the risk it posed to Jedi. By this point, the Council's previous attempts to send Jedi to investigate the weapon had failed, having only received scattered reports of the device being used throughout the galaxy since its unveiling at the Valo Republic Fair nearly eighty years before. The Jedi Masters decided to assign Rwoh to track down the manufacturer of the nullifiers, tasking Indara with bringing the Jedi Master—who was currently traveling the galaxy as a Wayseeker—back to Coruscant's Jedi Temple. When Indara was summoned to meet the Jedi High Council, she briefly spoke with Yaddle on her way to the Council Chamber as she anxiously wondered why she had been called to a meeting.[4]

Expecting to be assigned a research request, Indara was surprised to learn her objective was to bring Rwoh to Coruscant. Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis indicated that Rwoh was not easily contactable. As the Council needed her to handle a specific, time-sensitive issue, the best option was to send an emissary. Indara was then dismissed and immediately sent to board her assigned Jedi Vector. Though displeased with having to fly the vessel, preferring a more utilitarian craft, Indara departed the Jedi Temple in the Vector and jumped to hyperspace. After noting that Rwoh's last known location was the planet Cerifisis, she mapped the route to the world and determined two potential locations for a pit stop: the planets Haileap and Eiram. Knowing Rwoh's first assignment as a Jedi Knight had been Haileap, Indara chose to travel to the former, wanting to visit a place the Jedi Master had once resided. Meanwhile, as Indara traveled, Yaddle informed Rwoh via transmission to expect a Jedi to escort her to Coruscant.[4]

Upon landing on Haileap, Indara took a brief stroll around Port Haileap. At the insistence of the Ugnaught woman Orna, Indara visited Kimnol's Gambling Hall, noticing the latter's worried expression as she tried to convince the Jedi to go inside. Indara surveyed her surroundings from a table, spotting the human man arguing with a human woman, who was accusing him of cheating her. As they spoke, the Gigoran Hinra entered the establishment, wielding a large repeating blaster. Indara was shocked at seeing such a large weapon, generally meant for a landspeeder, wielded and powered on her lightsaber to parry the blaster bolts Hinra began spraying the tavern with. When Hinra aimed at Indara, she sliced the barrel of his repeating blaster with her lightsaber, and Force pushed him out the door. With appreciation, the Ugnaught offered her a mug of a foamy beverage and a pastry as thanks. Afterward, Indara departed Haileap and continued toward Cerifsis. The Weapons dealer Nilsson Summach met with his subordinates aboard his pleasure cruiser, discussing the outcome of Indara's involvement in their affairs in Haileap.[4]

On Cerifsis, Rwoh's droid J-6 (pictured) took her to meet the Jedi Master.

On Cerifsis, Rwoh's droid J-6 (pictured) took her to meet the Jedi Master.

After arriving on Cerifsis, Indara met Rwoh's droid, J-6, who escorted her to where Rwoh was meditating. Indara introduced herself to the Jedi Master, recounting the Jedi Council's request for Rwoh to return to Coruscant. Rwoh was surprised by Indara's relative inexperience, having expected the Jedi Council to choose a stalwart colleague from her younger days to convince her to return. Sensing Indara's nervousness, Rwoh decided that Indara should help her defeat the pirates plaguing Cerifsis—the Strafes—before they departed the world. Indara and Rwoh boarded a hauler headed toward the Strafes' hideout, planning to attack them there. While in the vehicle, Indara reflected on her initial meeting with Rwoh, finding the older woman unlikable, though impressive. Upon noticing the younger Jedi Knight sweating, Rwoh taught Indara how to regulate her body temperature using the Force, though the latter felt that the former's tone was patronizing.[4]

After the Strafes stopped the hauler, the Jedi exited the vehicle and began combating the pirates. The pair eventually went down a hallway and found the pirates' leader, a Toydarian. Indara powered up her lightsaber, prompting the Toydarian to activate a lightsaber nullifier via a bangle on his wrist, rendering both her and Rwoh's lightsabers useless. The Jedi pair began using the Force as their weapon, subduing the pirates with objects such as their lightsaber hilts, dishes, pipes, and wire. Once Cerifsis's security team arrived to handle the situation's cleanup, Indara, Rwoh, and J-6 departed the planet aboard Rwoh's ship, the Cantaros. Aboard, Rwoh informed Indara about the lightsaber nullifier the Toydarian had wielded against them on Cerifsis.[4]

A dramatic report

"You sent me because you knew my inexperience would provoke Master Rwoh to action. She returned with me to the Temple because you made her curious."
"Vernestra has always loved a challenge, and you bear the unique distinction of being one of the few Jedi Knights who would not buckle under her withering gaze. You were the perfect choice to provoke her to action. Besides, the Council has let you hide in the archives for the past year. Have you never wondered why that is?"
"I haven't been hiding. I've been busy. I had to do the treatise on the Nihil conflict, and then on the Hyperspace Rush, and then there was the new research… you know this."
"I know that you are a highly capable Jedi who has buried herself in the past after a tragedy. I know that you have never requested to be placed on the mission roster despite your colleagues urging you to. And I know that you have never fully dealt with the trauma you lived through on Seswenna."
"That's… that's not fair. Or true. I just… I've been busy. It's only been a year, not ten."

Indara confronted Yaddle (pictured) in her living quarters after returning to the Temple.

Upon arriving on Coruscant, Indara promptly visited Yaddle's quarters to confront the Jedi Master. Indara expressed dissatisfaction with being chosen to retrieve Rwoh for reasons other than her competency, as the Jedi Master had only returned with her due to her curiosity. Yaddle countered, indicating that Indara was the perfect choice to prompt Rwoh into action, as her talents were not best used hiding in the archives, and she also needed to begin healing from the trauma of the Farlingan Collapse. Afterward, Indara and Yaddle left the latter's quarters to attend Rwoh's audience with the Council, which was also open for Jedi spectators. Rwoh extolled her adventures as a Wayseeker to the waiting crowd of Jedi, impressing those present, including Indara. Having surmised that the Council would not act on the threat of the lightsaber nullifiers, Rwoh publicly demonstrated using one of the devices she had acquired on Cerifsis during a mock duel with Yaddle.[4]

Most Jedi were then summarily dismissed from the room, leaving only the Council, Rwoh, and Indara. In their brief discussion, Indara expressed her belief that knowledge of the lightsaber nullifiers was best not kept a secret so that Jedi might be prepared. Afterward, in Yaddle's quarters, Yaddle relayed more information on the Council's past efforts to track down lightsaber nullifiers. Yaddle then assigned Indara and Rwoh to meet with Garn, who had been rumored to be connected with a weapons dealer selling the nullifiers nearly fifteen years before. The Jedi Master told Indara and Rwoh that Garn had recently expressed a willingness to cooperate with the Republic with what he knew about the weapons dealer in exchange for safety. Though both Jedi were displeased to work with each other again, they departed without voicing a complaint.[4]

Tracking a weapon

Escorting a senator

"Now, since you're the archivist, tell me what you found out about Garn that might be most useful."
"So, judging from his past and the way he uses his knowledge of relevant laws, this is not an honest request from him. I don't think he actually plans on turning himself in. He's escaped prosecution for a number of crimes and still holds a favored position on senatorial committees."
"Do you think this is a distraction of sorts?"
"I looked a bit deeper into the Jedi Annexation Act that Garn sponsored. It never truly had the support it needed to pass, but it kicked up enough fuss that people stopped asking questions about Garn's investment in some very unsavory corporations. The man is the master of the misdirect. I suspect there is some piece of information that hasn't yet come to light—a bargaining chip hidden up his sleeve, so to speak. I suspect that once we get him safely to Coruscant, he has some scheme he'll put into action. The senator has spent an entire lifetime avoiding consequences, and I don't think that kind of person gives up easily."

Indara and Rwoh departed for the planet Thelj aboard the Cantaros, with J-6 piloting. In hyperspace, Indara researched the Jedi Annexation Act that Garn had supported years before to understand the senator she was about to meet. The Jedi Knight was shocked by the plentiful documentation of Garn's alleged misconduct in several incidents throughout his Senate tenure. Demotivated by the information, she set down her datapad and left her quarters to meet with Rwoh. The Jedi pair discussed Garn's past while enjoying lompop liqueur in the Cantatos' galley. Indara and Rwoh then discussed the latter's practice of shaving her head and the significance of the Mirialan's tattoos. In return, Indara informed Rwoh of the trauma of the Farlingan Collapse, which was why she had been serving as an archivist on Coruscant for the last year. Afterward, the pair briefly conversed about Garn before heading to sleep.[4]

Upon landing on Thelj, the pair disembarked, discussing the planet's relative state of dilapidation after the world was left behind by their main benefactors, the Graf family. The two Jedi boarded a train, eventually making their way to Garn's office in the city center. After receiving word that Garn still intended to meet with them, droid escorted Indara and Rwoh into a waiting room. Shortly after, Garn arrived and welcomed them, inviting them to stay and talk with him. When Rwoh pushed for them to depart, he briefly apologized to her before diving to the ground as two gunmen stormed the room. Indara and Rwoh ignited their lightsabers, only for the weapons to flicker out due to the the attackers using lightsaber nullifier. The Jedi improvised, using the Force to throw pillows full of combustible lonara feathers at their attackers. When the gunmen fired at one of the pillows, explosions ensued as the feathers set off a chain reaction. Indara and Rwoh then split up as they left the governmental building, pursuing Garn.[4]

Next steps and healing

"So I apologize if my asking about your master was upsetting, but I still live by the principles mine taught me. I should never forget that not every master-Padawan relationship is as it should be, and I regret the misstep."
"You still watch old holos of your master? Isn’t that… is that not attachment?"
"I don't think so, because I have never put the people I loved over the will of the Force. People I loved have died, and I have always accepted that this is just the nature of the galaxy. I don't fear losing the people I care for, but I do feel each loss quite keenly. But regardless, I shared this with you so you can understand the kind of relationship I had with my master, and how he shaped the kind of Jedi that I am now. The things I tell you, the knowledge I try to impart, comes from what I consider to be the spirit of sharing and connection within the Order. I know you are a perfectly capable Jedi. I have seen you handle yourself admirably. I meant what I said in the restaurant, and I hope that going forward we can be a bit more open with each other. It is simply what Stellan would have done. And what I, as his eager student, now do as well."

As Indara pursued Garn, she reflected on her frustrations working with Rwoh, finding the woman's lecturing insufferable, but appreciating the sense of competency that participating in missions gave. When Indara exited the building's turbolift, she approached an ornate landspeeder, which she assumed Garn was hiding in. However, Indara quickly realized that the Gigoran she had encountered on Haileap—Hinra—was in the pilot's seat. Indara dove out of the landspeeder's way as it drove toward her, and though she was tempted to pursue it afterward, she resolved to continue searching for Garn. The Jedi Knight located Garn's body shortly afterward and informed Rwoh of the development. Upon inspection of Garn's holoemitter, Indara recognized the face of the woman displayed on it as an associate of Hinra's. The Jedi then informed the local authorities of the incident.[4]

After failing to find a noodle shop on Thelj, Indara and Rwoh settled for ordering dumplings at a local establishment. There, a famished Indara finished her first serving and ordered another, wondering why she was so hungry. Rwoh indicated that Indara's body might not be used to using the Force, which would feel taxing to her. Indara's demeanor became defensive, prompting Rwoh to ask whether the former's Master had been critical. Uncomfortable, Indara suggested they leave, though Rwoh left encouraging words for her partner. The two Jedi then returned to the Cantaros, with Rwoh reflecting on her previously combative interactions with Indara and resolving to do better.[4]

After contacting the Council with their findings, Rwoh showed Indara old recordings of her own Jedi Master, Stellan Gios, reflecting that Masters should never be as harsh as Indara's was to her. Rwoh imparted to Indara that her attempts to pass on knowledge were not meant to be patronizing but instead in the spirit of sharing and learning together in harmony. Indara thanked Rwoh for her candor, admitting that her Master had been harsh. Though the pair then separated to get some rest, Rwoh was contacted by Yaddle shortly afterward and eventually permitted to continue her pursuit of the manufacturers of the lightsaber nullifiers by heading to the Jedi temple on the planet Hynestia.[4]

Search for a scientist

J-6: "We are on the initial approach to Ingae. Time to sit down and fasten your restraining belt, because it is going to be a bumpy ride."
Indara: "I'm sorry, is that an asteroid belt?"
Vernestra Rwoh: "Asteroids as well as a few deep-space mines. The Collective takes their privacy very seriously."

On Hynestia, Indara and Rwoh disembarked, with the former reflecting on how Gios' advice had helped her realize she needed to have more confidence. The pair met Jedi Master Quintana, who greeted them and helped them to the temple's terminal so they could access the Jedi Archives. The trio briefly discussed the threat of the lightsaber nullifiers, with Quintana providing what knowledge she had. Indara and Rwoh then researched the topic in the Archives, unsuccessfully attempting to translate a phrase Garn had made in his last testament in his holoemitter. With that search method not working, Indara instead began to pull records of scientists specializing in small-scale power generation. After refining her search several times, she pulled up a record for the scientist Florinda Jackard, the woman pictured on Garn's holoemitter. Rwoh, upon hearing that Jackard had been associated with a group called the Collective, immediately told Indara to collect what records she could so they could depart immediately.[4]

On the Cantaros (pictured), Indara and Vernestra Rwoh discussed the latter's hyperspace Force visions.

On the Cantaros (pictured), Indara and Vernestra Rwoh discussed the latter's hyperspace Force visions.

Once aboard the Cantaros, Rwoh told Indara of her hyperspace Force visions and how they had been aiding their current mission, including pointing them to their next destination—the planet Ingae. The pair conversed about the nature of the visions and how the Collective—a reclusive group of scientists—may be able to help. The pair departed to get some rest; however, Indara was abruptly awoken sometime later when the Cantaros' alarms began blaring. Though confused, J-6 informed Indara that they were on the standard approach to Ingae, meaning she should strap in as they went through a field of asteroids and deep-space mines. Eventually, after a bumpy ride, the Cantaros landed on Ingae. Indara was awed by the idyllic surroundings, following Rwoh and J-6 to the Collective's council house.[4]

After arriving at a magistrate's office, Indara and Rwoh met Magistrate Felix Sunvale, who greeted Rwoh warmly. Rwoh explained they were seeking information about Jackard and the lightsaber nullifier, prompting Sunvale to take them to their library. As the group conversed, Rwoh discerned that Jackard had worked on developing sources of oscillating energy while with the Collective, which could be used as a replacement for recainium, the original fuel source of the first model of lightsaber nullifiers. Despite Sunvale offering to host them for an extended visit, Indara and Rwoh departed Ingae to continue their search for Jackard, hoping to reach her before others pursuing the scientist did.[4]

Into the fighting arena

"Who is Hinra? Is he the Gigoran I was following?"
"What a curious little Jedi you are. I'm surprised you can talk after the dose of lointy venom we shot you with."
"Who does Hinra work for? And why did they kill Garn?"
"I tell you what. If anything is left of you to talk to after you face the gheriol, then I will happily answer your questions."

Aboard the Cantaros, Indara continued researching Jackard among the records she had obtained. After informing Rwoh of her findings, the Jedi decided to head to the planet Ruathi instead of searching for Jackard on Seswenna, having surmised that she may have moved on from the latter location since she was seen there. The Cantaros eventually landed on Ruathi, with Indara eagerly making her way to the nearby dockyard, which boasted several noodle shops and grill stands. Rwoh and Indara made their way to the Rusty Droid tavern, where the former intended to meet with an old acquaintance of hers, the Force-sensitive operative Ty Yorrick.[4]

As Vernestra Rwoh (pictured) conversed with Ty Yorrick on Ruathi, Indara left their table to follow Hinra.

As Vernestra Rwoh (pictured) conversed with Ty Yorrick on Ruathi, Indara left their table to follow Hinra.

After introductions were completed, Rwoh told Yorrick of their search for information on lightsaber nullifiers. Noticing the tension between the two women, Indara excused herself to order refreshments from the establishment's bar. While waiting for her order, she spotted Hinra outside and decided to pursue him, surmising that it was not worth interrupting Rwoh and Yorrick to inform them. Indara continued following Hinra and a human woman through a crowd, listening to their conversation. As the Gigoran broke off to travel alone, Indara tracked him through a park and into a residential building. However, Hinra noticed her and threw a punch her way. Indara dodged, Force-pushing him against a wall and indicating she wanted to question him. However, one of the Gigoran's colleagues drugged the Jedi Knight with lointy venom, causing her to lose consciousness. Meanwhile, Rwoh and Yorrick continued their discussion, with the latter explaining that the latest batch of lightsaber nullifiers had been refined on Ruathi. Eventually, they noticed Indara had left the tavern and resolved to find her to ensure she was alright.[4]

Not long after, Indara awoke and found herself in restraints. The Jedi Knight surveyed her surroundings, finding that she had been taken to a dark cave and had her lightsaber taken. A Chadra-Fan noticed her stand up and told her to rest before her bout with gheriol creatures later, though the Jedi did not know what the creatures were. The fighting pit's owner, Kliva of Arnt, approached Indara and was surprised the Jedi could speak after being drugged. Indara tried to ask Kliva about Garn and Hinra, though the former waved the queries off. During this time, Hinra informed his employer, Summach, about encountering and subduing Indara. Summach instructed his subordinates that Indara should be killed, not trusting Kliva to keep her properly contained, and worried that she seemed to be following Hinra. Meanwhile, Rwoh and Yorrick investigated the local eateries around the Rusty Droid, not finding Indara. They continued their search and eventually met a young boy, who pointed them in the direction he had seen Indara go earlier. Rwoh and Yorrick resolved to search for Indara where the weekly fight night event was being held.[4]

Outsmarting gheriols

"So, you got yourself kidnapped?"
"I'm just glad you found me. I saw the Gigoran who killed Senator Garn walk past the tavern, and I followed him. I think he was here to kill someone, but I'm not sure why. We need to find Kliva of Arnt. She runs this place alongside a Houk. She was also talking to the Gigoran when I saw him. She's the one lead we have."

In Kliva's fighting pits, Indara was awoken by fetid water being thrown at her. A man took her to the dirt fighting ring, where a large gheriol creature was released to attack her. Indara dodged the first few of the creature's attacks, displeasing the crowd, who wanted her to be ripped apart. Noticing the situation, the event's organizers let loose a second gheriol into the pit. Improvising, Indara ran directly toward the creatures to trick them into believing she was a threat. Once the gheriols were distracted, she used the Force to launch herself onto the metal fencing surrounding the arena. The gheriols could not sense where she had gone, as they had no eyes and used other senses to surmise her location.[4]

The crowd became upset at this turn of events, trying to rattle the fence to dislodge Indara. One spectator managed to break the panel of fencing Indara clung to, sending her falling toward the area and opening the gheriols' access to the rest of the crowd. As the rest of the fight spectators were mauled or attempted to flee, Indara laid still, with the fence panel trapping her in a cage of relative safety. Rwoh and Yorrick arrived at the arena shortly afterward, having been told by a passersby about Indara fighting there. After Rwoh and Yorrick wrapped the gheriols in pieces of fencing, using the Force to restrain them. When Rwoh freed Indara from her restraints, the younger Jedi explained that she had followed the Gigoran she encountered on Haileap and Thelj when she was caught and poisoned.[4]

Indara and Rwoh crept through the hallways of the fighting establishment until they found Kliva. Kliva initially refused to talk, but when Indara used a mind trick on her, the owner informed the Jedi that Summach had killed the senator and employed both Hinra and Jackard, though the latter later betrayed him. When the Houk in the room shot Kliva to prevent her from revealing more, Indara recouped her lightsaber, and she and Rwoh left. The Jedi attempted to free other prisoners Indara had seen in cages earlier, but upon visiting, they saw that they were all dead. Indara passed out, and Rwoh carried her back to the ship. Before leaving Ruathi, Rwoh acquired several boxes of noodles for Indara when she woke up.[4]

Lompop's hideout

Deva Lompop: "You do understand that the location of my home is supposed to be a secret. The only reason you even know where I live is because Avon trusted you, and I trusted her. Do you know how many people would like the chance to kill me? And here you are bringing strangers—Jedi, no less."
Ty Yorrick: "Ty Yorrick. No longer a Jedi. Just old and tired."
Indara: "Jedi Knight Indara. Guilty as charged. But I am glad to meet you."
Vernestra Rwoh: "Deva. Jay-Six flew us here. Your secret remains safe."

Deva Lompop gave Indara and her colleagues a lead to help them find Florinda Jackard.

Back on the Cantaros, Indara was connected to a medline. After waking, Rwoh informed Indara of their next destination to meet Deva Lompop, a former acquaintance that she thought might have a lead on Jackard. The Cantaros quickly stopped to deliver the gheriols to a refuge on[4] the planet[10] Hetzal before heading to Lompop's hideout. Upon landing, Indara, Yorrick, and Rwoh ran through the hideout's hangar, as they had only two minutes until its security protocols kicked in. Blaster bolts began raining down on them, forcing Indara to seek cover. When Lompop came to meet them, Rwoh explained that they were seeking information on Jackard's whereabouts.[4]

Lompop helped Indara translate the Fruscti phrase Garn had left in his last testament, which pointed the group toward Jackard's next destination. Though reluctant, Lompop eventually sent the information she had on the scientist to Rwoh's ship and sent the same information to Summach so she could not be accused of breaking her contract. Rwoh gave Lompop a sunstone as payment, though after they departed, the Jedi Master informed Indara and Yorrick of the flaw that made the stone worthless. Around the same time, Summach was informed of Indara's survival of the gheriols on Ruathi, disappointed by being unable to tie up that loose end.[4]

Confrontation on Pinara

"I am going to crush you, little Jedi."
"Not likely. If you come with me peacefully, you have some hope for the future."
"So small. So foolish."
"I'm not going to kill you. You killed Garn, and I know you work for Nilsson. Once you can no longer fight, I'm going to take you to Coruscant to face justice for your crimes. They may be lenient if you work with them."

In line with Lompop's information, the Cantaros flew to the planet Pinara to track Jackard. Indara and Rwoh found the scientist shortly afterward but noticed Hinra chasing her. As Rwoh continued pursuing Jackard, Indara fought Hinra, who activated his lightsaber nullifier. Unfazed, Indara used the Force to lift him and throw him into the nearest wall before using the Force to snap his lightsaber nullifier in half. Indara then powered up her lightsaber, expressing that she would not kill him; instead, he would be taken back to Coruscant to face justice for his crimes.[4]

However, a sniper killed Hinra the moment afterward, disappointing Indara. Rwoh returned to Indara's location, informing the younger Jedi Knight that Jackard had chosen to align with Summach and revealed that the arms dealers' laboratory was on the planet Septra. Rwoh, Indara, and Yorrick fled Pinara aboard the Cantaros, realizing that the issue was larger than they could handle and knowing they could be detained on the world if they did not immediately leave. After they jumped to hyperspace, Rwoh was pulled into a hyperspace Force vision, with Indara helping the Jedi Master to her quarters so she would wake up more comfortably.[4]

Lab infiltration and Wayseeking

"Well, I was thinking that I would like to become a Wayseeker. I have already put in my formal request to the Council, but I was wondering if you would be willing to give them a recommendation on my behalf."
"Of course. But I have to ask… why? I thought you were happy here on Coruscant."
"I am. But… you talked about being the light in the galaxy, and then I was thinking about the idea that we are all lights, and no matter how brightly we burn, we are all chasing away at least a little of the darkness. And I want to be that person for someone, the person who pushes back the shadows just enough to make life better."

After returning to Coruscant, Indara submitted an application to the Jedi High Council to become a Wayseeker.

After returning to Coruscant, Indara submitted an application to the Jedi High Council to become a Wayseeker.

While still traveling, the trio met in the Cantaros's galley after Rwoh woke from her vision and made plans to head to Septra to confront Summach in his lab in the abandoned Kolnare Mine on Septra. Upon arrival, the Jedi and Yorrick started their attack, which Summach was soon alerted of. With J-6 giving them cover, the group moved forward behind the protection of Rwoh's plasma shield and Indara throwing rocks at Summach's underlings. After traversing a long hallway, they found Summach's lightsaber nullifier assembly line and Jackard and other scientists bound to chairs nearby. Yorrick took Jackard into custody as a representative of the Ruathi government, and she and Indara escorted the scientist back to the surface.[4]

Meanwhile, Rwoh fought Summach, though his assistant Grizela killed him mid-fight, frustrated with his lack of competency in leading their group. Grizela then let loose a canister of poisonous gas, and though Rwoh fled, she could not escape all of the gas's effects. Indara saw the pair as they exited the mine and knocked out Grizela by throwing a rock at her head, saving Rwoh, though the Jedi Master passed out afterward. Afterward, the Jedi returned to Coruscant, where Indara testified at Grizela's initial hearing. The Jedi Knight also sent a request to the Jedi Council to become a Wayseeker, which she spoke to Rwoh about, hoping the Jedi Master would give her a recommendation. Rwoh agreed to do so, though she was confused why Indara would want to take that path until the latter explained her reasoning and newfound confidence. As Indara prepared to depart, Rwoh wished her well.[4]

Ultimately, the Council approved Indara's request to be a Wayseeker. Subsequently, she spent time traveling the galaxy to commune with the Force and learn from the wider galaxy. Indara furthered her study of various martial arts forms during this time, becoming a pupil under several masters of other traditions. The knowledge she gained from her studies heightened her appreciation for her Jedi training, and she augmented her combat skills with the new skills she had learned. One such institution Indara spent significant time studying at was the Skoydon school of martial arts, from which she earned a Skoydon marking from, which sat beneath her eye. Other fighting disciplines Indara studied as a Wayseeker included Sera Plinck, Bakuuni Hand, Gravik-nez, Wrruushi, which she learned from the Jedi Master Kelnacca, and Zavat. Indara recorded summaries of her experiences in a holocron called The Indara Lessons, which Padawans at the Coruscant Jedi Temple regularly perused to learn from.[1]

Mission to Brendok

Vergence search

"…I want to go home to Coruscant."
"I know, But we're on a mission."
"We've been here for seven weeks. And there's no one here, and if we were going to find something, we probably would've found it by now."
"A hundred years ago, this planet was catalogued as lifeless because of a hyperspace disaster. Yet this planet, Brendok, is thriving."

Indara searched for a vergence on Brendok alongside a team of Jedi.

Indara eventually became Jedi Master[7] began training a Padawan, Torbin,[6] between around 158 BBY and 157 BBY.[15] The Jedi Master endeavored to temper Torbin's restless nature by steering him along paths where he could seek answers to his questions and balance himself. Even when their initiatives demanded repetitive procedures, Indara often chose not lecture her Padawan,[1] unlike her own Master had done to her.[4] In 148 BBY,[16] she was sent to the planet Brendok with her friend,[7] the Jedi Knight Sol, Kelnacca, and Torbin.[17] Together, the grouping were known as the Brendok four.[5] For seven weeks, the Jedi tested plant samples on the world—which had been devastated in the Great Hyperspace Disaster—to discover if the world's regeneration of life was caused by a vergence in the Force. Indara used a datapad and an analyzer terrain scanner device to assist,[14] and the Jedi continued working under the assumption Brendok was uninhabited.[6] However, they proved unable to detect any Cronau radiation, which would have been expected from the site of an Emergence.[1]

Torbin became increasingly restless with the assignment and expressed his discontent during a meal in the Jedi's camp. While Indara coached him to be mindful of his feelings[14] and anxieties[1] about their mission, Sol further explained that they were searching for a vergence. The following day, Indara and Sol discussed Torbin's distracted attitude as they worked to analyze more plant samples. The Jedi Master also noted to the latter that she sensed the Jedi Knight's discontent as well, indicating that it was why she had a Padawan while he did not. At Indara's instruction, Sol split from the group and she told him to meet them at camp later.[14] Meanwhile, Indara became concerned that only she and Kelnacca remained focused on their task, as Torbin became restless and Sol began pursuing theories she found outlandish.[1]

Investigations into a coven

"They do not treat the girls like children."
"We should return to the ship. Ask the Council for guidance."
"I fear for the girls' safety. The witches prepare for a ceremony tonight. What if the girls are in danger? Indara, I know you would defer to the Council, but I insist. Come with me. See what I have seen."
―Sol and Indara — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[14]

Sol discovered[14] that an exiled coven of witches led by Mother Aniseya started training children on Brendok to use the Thread—also called the Force—which was against Galactic Republic law when used in a dark way.[6] After failing to reach Indara via comm, Sol decided to spy on the coven, taking notice of the twin sisters Verosha "Osha" and Mae-ho "Mae" Aniseya—daughters of Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril—as they wandered outside the witches' fortress.[14]

Indara and her colleagues covertly entered the witches' fortress on Brendok.

Indara and her colleagues covertly entered the witches' fortress on Brendok.

Mother Aniseya and[6] her[18] colleagues kept track of the Jedi's movements with scouts, assuming the visiting group had moved their ship[14]Polan GX-8[1]— inland, where the group had set up a camp.[6] Meanwhile, Sol snuck into the fortress and observed the witches training the children, fearing for their safety after learning of the upcoming ceremony. Indara was alarmed upon learning of the witches' presence on Brendok, but cautioned her colleagues that they could not be Nightsisters—as they did not raise younglings—and that they also did not have all the information. Though Indara initially felt the Jedi should ask the Jedi High Council for guidance, she ceded to Sol's opinion and instructed Kelnacca to slice the fortress's door controls so they could enter. The Jedi Master also initially expressed her wish to confront the witches alone, to seem less threatening, but eventually agreed they should go in as a group.[14]

Interrupting a ceremony

On the night of the twins' Rite of Ascension ceremony to become witches, Indara and the other Jedi slashed one of the coven's platforms and entered to the courtyard where the ritual was being held. Indara introduced her colleagues by name to the witches, insisting to the skeptical women that the Jedi did not mean to intrude or cause harm, having thought the world was uninhabited. The witches rebuffed the Jedi's claim that children were present on Brendok, offended at the visitors breaching their sacred inner circle. After Verosha caught Indara's eye, the Jedi Master encouraged the child to come out of the crowd of witches. Mother Aniseya agreed to Indara's inquiry of meeting Mae-ho as well, informing her that the children had no father.[6]

Indara and Mother Aniseya argued on Brendok when the Jedi interrupted the witches' Rite of Ascension.

When Sol proposed to Verosha that she be tested as a Jedi, the child implored her mother for permission. However, Mother Aniseya used a Thread ability to incapacitate Torbin, threatening Indara that they needed to leave or she would not undo the effects. Indara insisted that she could not deny the Jedi's right to test potential Padawans, prompting the leader to reluctantly agree to allow the twins to be brought to the Jedi's camp the following day. The Jedi Master thanked them for cooperating, exiting the courtyard with her colleagues.[6]

Afterward on their ship, Indara thanked Sol for distracting the witches by asking them to test the girls, which would give her time to consult the Council. However, she sharply disagreed with her colleague's wish to seriously consider Verosha as a potential student due to her age and mused that the ceremonial markings part of the Ascension ceremony could be a harmless cultural ritual.[14]

Testing potential students

Afterward, Mother Aniseya's advisors discussed whether to kill the Jedi or not to prevent their testing, with Koril insisting on striking at the visitors. Mother Aniseya insisted that it was her decision to allow the twins to meet with the Jedi, though later told her children to lie to them to avoid being taken off Brendok. The next day on their ship,[6] Indara helped test Mae-ho for Force-sensitivity[19] using a Jedi testing screen, with the former explaining to the child that she would be expected to describe what images were displayed on the device, though the child answered the questions incorrectly.[6] Afterward, Indara and Mae-ho discussed the witches' Ascension ceremony, with the Jedi Master becoming increasingly concerned after learning the ritual's details, including details about the child's marking and its meaning.[14]

Indara explained to Verosha how testing to become a Jedi worked.

Indara explained to Verosha how testing to become a Jedi worked.

Following Mae-ho's failure of the test, Indara agreed to allow Sol to attempt a different approach with Osha.[14] Indara sat beside Sol as they repeated the process for Osha, with the former Master explaining how the testing worked to the child. When Verosha was caught lying on one of the trial questions, as she had promised her family she would do, Indara surmised that her family did not want to be separated from her. Verosha eventually passed the test[6] after answering questions from that point forward correctly, troubling Indara as she watched Sol conduct the rest of the testing,[14] seeing that he was coaching her to succeed.[1] When the child left, Indara asked the Council for their advice on the matter and told Torbin to run the girls' blood samples to check their m-count, telling her colleagues to continue their field work until they had a response.[14]

Later that day, however, Indara informed her fellow Jedi that the Council had said they should not interfere further nor take the girls for Jedi training. After the Jedi reviewed the twins' blood samples and found their symbionts to be the same, as well as their high Force-sensitivity:[14] the development frightened the gathered Jedi, who knew great power—specifically only the power of a vergence—would have been needed to create such a result.[20] An excited Torbin rushed to go collect the girls under the belief that the pair's creation was enough to prove a vergence on the planet existed—thus allowing the Jedi to return home. Sol pursued him on speeder bike while Indara and Kelnacca followed on the Jedi's ship.[14]

Meanwhile, Verosha informed her mother that she wished to become a Jedi, much to the dismay of most coven members other than Aniseya. At Koril's prompting, Mae-ho sought to prevent her sister from leaving Brendok and sabotaged the fortress's door controls before accidentally starting a fire outside Osha's room. In the Jedi's ship, Indara approached the fortress and witnessed explosions rocking it from within, allowing Kelnacca to jump down to the structure while she found somewhere to land. However, Kelnacca was affected by the witches' collectively using a Force ability to control his actions and fought Sol and Torbin.[14] Upon her arrival, Indara forced Kelnacca to the ground before using the Force, with much effort, to cease the witches' mental enslavement over Kelnacca[6] by mentally cutting the Thread connection.[1] Ignoring Sol's efforts to explain himself, she then instructed Sol to find the twins. In breaking the witches' hold on Kelnacca,[14] Indara unknowingly killed[21] the chanting witches when their concentration broke.[14]

Indara confronted Sol about his actions on Brendok as they left the planet.

Indara confronted Sol about his actions on Brendok as they left the planet.

Sol ultimately saved Osha, bringing her to the Jedi's ship for medical care.[6] Indara instructed Kelnacca to send a message to Coruscant telling Torbin they were going home. The Jedi Master berated both Sol and her Padawan for not heeding her warning to not interfere and tussling with the former. However, she nonetheless insisted that their group of Jedi should lie to the Council and tell them that Mae-ho's fire had killed all the witches, which would allow Verosha to become Sol's Padawan—not taking her dream of being a Jedi from her, now that the rest of her life was ruined.[14] Verosha remained unaware that Mae-ho had survived, despite the rest of the witches dying. Following the ordeal, Sol took Verosha as his Padawan[7] after they returned to Coruscant.[6]

Mae-ho began training under "the Master" following the events, which included Indara, on Brendok.

Around a year after their departure, Torbin completed his Padawan training after passing his Jedi Trials, eventually also ascending to the rank of Jedi Master.[22] The year following Torbin's completion his training, Indara embarked on her second stint as a Wayseeker, earning her second Skoydon marking.[1] Eventually, Indara advised the Jedi High Council to discontinue Osha's training. Ultimately, Verosha departed the Jedi Order[7] around 138 BBY[23] after deciding on her own to leave the Jedi.[7] Around 143 BBY,[24] Indara returned to the Jedi Temple, having completed her second time as a Wayseeker.[1]

Meanwhile, Mae-ho decided she wished revenge on four Jedi who had been on Brendok—one of whom was Indara—for leaving her for dead in the fire. Her grudge prompted her to[25] plot to kill them to please[22] her master, a Sith known only as "the Master"[26] whom she had met in 134 BBY,[27] though who was using the alias Qimir while posing as a trader.[26]

Death and legacy

Around 134 BBY,[28] Indara was assigned to Point Ueda on the planet Ueda,[7] with her duties primarily consisting of interacting with planetary leaders, local marshals, and civic representatives to keep the world's peace. Though her duties often filled her schedule, she enjoyed spending time in the Lomi Usqi Noodle Shop to listen to local gossip and reports from local traders and visitors.[1] In 132 BBY,[3] she visited the noodle shop, sitting at one of the restaurant's corner tables with several other alien and human patrons. Mae—by that time operating as a secret[7] Sith assassin[29]—pursued the Jedi Master to Ueda, bribing the alien[7] Deesh Crozil[1] at the settlement's gates to tell her where Indara was, intending to kill the Jedi. Once inside the restaurant, Mae-ho prompted Indara to attack her to settle their "unfinished business." However, when the nearby patrons laughed at her, the Jedi Master silenced her dining companions and insisted she had no reason to fight the newcomer, as Jedi do not strike the unarmed.[7]

Indara engaged the unknown assailant in hand-to-hand combat.

Indara engaged the unknown assailant in hand-to-hand combat.

Angered, Mae-ho attacked several aliens and started a mass barfight in the noodle shop. After briefly seizing the assassin by the wrist, Indara engaged in hand-to-hand combat with Mae, dodging the latter's attempt to take her lightsaber.[7] Mae-ho eventually became frustrated when she was unable to land a blow on the Jedi Master without using a weapon, eventually taking out a set of knives.[30] Using defensive techniques, the Jedi Master avoided Mae's attempts to stab her with her knives, using the Force to halt her movements mid-strike. When Indara inquired who trained her, the assassin[7] Force jumped[30] to the second level of the noodle shop and took a hostage[7]Kella Antro[1]—holding a knife to her captive's throat.[7]

Indara swiftly vaulted herself toward Anto, sending a comlink message informing others of the assassin's presence while dodging other patrons as they fled. Mae-ho threw her hostage off the edge of a catwalk and hid, prompting Indara to slow the patron's descent with the Force. Indara then walked around the rest of the second level of the establishment, eventually engaging Mae-ho in combat again as the assassin continued her knife attacks. Though the Jedi Master was pushed into a wall by one of the assassin's kicks, she managed to use the Force to push her assailant away from her.[7]

Indara was stabbed in the heart by one of Mae-ho's knives.

After disarming Mae, Indara shifted the assassin's cloth mask off her face, questioning why she had come. The assassin declared her intent to kill the Jedi Master, using the Force to draw several more knives and throw them at Indara. The Jedi Master sliced each into pieces with her lightsaber, telling her opponent that her current course of action was unwise, as she would not win. Mae-ho countered that a Jedi never drew their weapon unless prepared to kill, prompting Indara to deactivate it and move out of her attack stance. After both heard clanking noises, the pair turned to see[7] Cabuck,[1] the noodle shop's barkeep, still at[7] his[1] station below.[7]

Mae-ho threw one of her knives at Cabuck, which Indara stalled mid-air using the Force. However, while the Jedi Master was distracted, the assassin hurled her other knife in the Jedi's body. Indara collapsed to one knee as her lightsaber deactivated, bleeding from her chest as Mae-ho surveyed her mortally wounded opponent.[7] Emotional at the Jedi's death, Mae-ho maintained a cold facade[31] as the Jedi died, backing away only after her passing and leaving the restaurant.[7]

Initial investigations

Following the shocking incident,[31] Cabuck described Mae's physical appearance to investigators. The Jedi Knight Yord Fandar and his Padawan, Tasi Lowa, were dispatched to look into the incident, tracking down Mae's twin sister—Osha—as a potential suspect. After the pair informed her of why they had come, Verosha was offended that the Jedi thought her capable of a crime such as killing Indara, as she now worked as a simple meknek mechanic. When Cabuck claimed that Verosha was the killer after recognizing her physical appearance, Verosha was sent on a DTE-CSA-17 Calaboose prison ship,[7] the Palwick,[1] to Coruscant.[7]

Master Sol investigated Indara's murder with the help of his Padawan, Jecki Lon, Yord Fandar, and Osha.

Master Sol investigated Indara's murder with the help of his Padawan, Jecki Lon, Yord Fandar, and Osha.

In the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Rwoh informed Sol—now a Jedi Master—that they had Verosha in custody as a suspect in Indara's murder. Though saddened by his friend's death, Sol was hesitant to believe his former student would commit such a crime, citing how they had saved Verosha from a fire in her youth. When Osha's prison transport crashed on the snowy[7] planet[31] Carlac following a failed escape attempt by several of the other criminals on Osha's prison transport, Fandar, Sol's Padawan Jecki Lon, and Sol were dispatched to the world. After finding Osha, she repeatedly claimed to Sol that she was not responsible for Indara's murder and eventually left Carlac with the Jedi.[7]

Though Fandar remained suspicious of Verosha for Indara's death, Sol refused to put her in restraints. Sol and Rwoh then communicated via hologram about the former's theory that Mae-ho had committed the crime, which the latter agreed with due to another break-in occurring at a Jedi temple on[22] the planet[1] Olega while Verosha was in their custody, thus making it impossible for her to have been responsible. On Olega, Sol confronted Mae-ho for killing Indara and then later Torbin in Olega's Jedi temple, prompting the assassin to attack him before eventually fleeing to escape Jedi arrest.[22]

Vernestra Rwoh displayed holograms of Kelnacca, Indara, and Torbin in the Coruscant Jedi Temple during their murder investigations.

In Coruscant's Jedi Temple, several Jedi Masters met to discuss Indara and Torbin's murder, with Rwoh displaying the pair as holograms on a central table beside Kelnacca, though the two Jedi who had passed away were tinged in red. Rwoh ordered the Jedi present to have Kelnacca pull out from his post on[32] the planet[1] Khofar and have Mae-ho brought in, pointing out to Sol that the assassin was targeting the four Jedi who had been on Brendok sixteen years prior. On Khofar, Mae-ho and Qimir—who had traveled to the world to find Kelnacca—discussed the former's murder of Indara and Torbin and how it had not satisfied their Master's demands due to using weapons to end their lives.[32]

Mae-ho opted to end her quest and forego killing Kelnacca in favor of reuniting with her sister, whom she had recently discovered was alive on Olega. However, her Sith master then killed the Wookiee Jedi instead,[32] and Jecki's later attempt to arrest Mae-ho for Indara's murder was unsuccessful.[26] Afterward, Mae-ho posed as Verosha by dressing in her sister's clothes and left Khofar with Sol. As he walked through the Jedi's ship, she reminisced on when she had been on one prior, hearing in her mind Indara's instructions on how testing to become a Jedi worked.[19]

Truth hidden

"Sixteen years ago, four Jedi were stationed on the planet Brendok. There they discovered a Force cult of witches. A conflict ensued. There were many casualties. Afterwards, the Jedi conspired to keep their actions secret. Recently, when the truth threatened to come out, a rogue Jedi named Sol killed his accomplices to maintain the cover story. Speaking on behalf of the High Council, we wholly condemn the actions of Master Sol."

Not long afterward, Sol, Mae-ho, Verosha, the Master traveled to Brendok, with Sol ultimately dying after being strangled to death by Verosha when she chose to side with the Master. Meanwhile, Rwoh was informed by Senator[33] Worus Rayencourt[1] that word of her murder investigation—which had commenced upon Indara's death—had spread beyond the Jedi Order, calling into question the transparency of the Jedi. The Jedi Master reluctantly admitted several Jedi had been killed but assured the senator that a suspect would be in custody soon.[33]

Vernestra Rwoh lied to a Senate committee that Sol had killed Indara, Torbin, and Kelnacca, hoping to avoid a proposed external review of the Jedi Order by blaming the incident on one rogue instigator.

Rwoh then pursued Sol and Mae-ho to the witches' former fortress on Brendok, hearing the echoes of Indara's words in the courtyard sixteen years before and grieving Sol's death upon finding his body. Upon returning to Coruscant, Rwoh claimed to a committee of senators that the four Jedi sent to Brendok years before—which included Indara—had sparked a conflict resulting in many casualties when confronting the witches and conspired to hide the truth. She further lied that Sol had killed his Jedi colleagues to prevent the truth from coming out and that she had later found him dead—presumably having ended his own life—on Brendok, assuring the tribunal's members that their proposed external review of the Jedi Order was not necessary. Though Rwoh felt sorry for blaming Sol for crimes he did not commit, she nevertheless reaffirmed, on behalf of the Jedi High Council, her tale of how Indara and her colleagues had died at Sol's hand.[33]

Personality and traits

Hesitant archivist

"…I know you are a capable Jedi, Indara. The Council would not have sent you after me if you were not. But your inexperience can get both of us killed, and as long as we're working together, please know that the things I tell you are merely information, not a judgment of your skills or lack thereof."

Indara was willing to draw her lightsaber in combat, though did not otherwise seek out conflict.

The Jedi stood 1.77 meters (5 feet, 9 inches) tall and had light skin and blue eyes. Indara kept her dark brown hair styled in an updo.[1] In 148 BBY,[16] Indara bore one circular marking near one of her eyes, though[34] by 132 BBY,[3] she had added one more, making for two markings total.[34] As a Padawan and in her early career as a Jedi Knight, Indara was a nervous and reserved individual. During her training, Indara's Jedi Master regularly insulted her, resulting in Indara not having confidence in her abilities. Indara's sense of self-worth further diminished following her traumatizing experience during the Farlingan Collapse.[4]

However, after working with Rwoh to investigate the production of lightsaber nullifiers, Indara regained confidence in her abilities. Though Indara respected the Jedi High Council as a young Jedi Knight, she also understood that the group could have flaws and felt inspired to travel the galaxy as a Wayseeker to help ordinary people. Indara and Rwoh initially shared tense interactions as the latter tried to mentor the former, which the Jedi Knight felt was patronizing. However, over time, their relationship mended,[4] and they became friends.[7] Indara deeply respected the Jedi of the past, such as Cantaros and Gios, whom she had studied. Among her colleagues, Indara maintained a relationship with Yaddle, often looking to the older Jedi for advice.[4]

Indara, as a Jedi Master

Indara, as a Jedi Master

Indara later became a well-respected Jedi Master[35] who often exuded a sense of command, authority,[36] and resolve[37] with her presence[36] as she led her colleagues on missions.[6] By her peers, Indara was considered an example of Jedi excellence due to her decades of experience and useful skills.[1] Indara was loyal to the Jedi Order's ideals and supported the organization's belief that, under Galactic Republic authority, Jedi had the right to test any children as potential Padawan candidates. When first meeting them,[6] Indara was friendly[18] toward Verosha and Mae-ho on Brendok, reassuring them that the Jedi would not harm them.[6] By 132 BBY,[3] Indara had remained friends with Rwoh,[7] her former mission partner,[4] and had developed a friendly working relationship with Sol, with whom she had been stationed on Brendok previously.[7]

As a Jedi, Indara did not believe in attacking unarmed individuals[7] and mourned the occasions when ending an individual's life was necessary for a mission.[4] Indara sought to respect those she met,[7] having spent time learning about other worlds' cultures and fighting forms as a Padawan.[4] Despite Indara's intention not to attack, the witches in Aniseya's coven on Brendok took offense to Indara and her colleagues being armed with their lightsabers on Brendok while trespassing in one of their sacred areas.[6] On Ueda, Indara attempted to save as many innocents as possible[7] out of moral duty[35] when they were in danger, including the noodle shop's barkeep.[7] Mae, meanwhile, sought to test the Jedi Master's resolve to put others' lives above her own by attacking civilians to see if the Jedi would help them.[30]

Though Indara was confident that Mae-ho would eventually be unsuccessful in her revenge-fueled endeavors, Indara was ultimately killed in their duel.[7] Mae-ho wished to exact revenge on Indara and three other Jedi for perceived wrongs,[22] as the Jedi had taken her sister away from Brendok, which she had tried and failed to prevent.[6] The assassin felt emotional upon her successful murder of the Jedi Master,[31] pleased with her actions.[22] In contrast, Sol was saddened upon hearing of her passing.[7]

Powers and abilities

A young Jedi

"I thought you found me sheltered and inept.
"Sheltered, yes. Young? Definitely. Inept? No. You handled yourself admirably when we went up against the pirates. Your lightsaber forms could use some work, but that's merely a matter of practice. I do think that the Order letting you waste your youth on cataloging the accomplishments of long-gone Jedi is a disservice. Jedi should be out in the galaxy, not hiding away in temples."

While training as a Jedi Padawan, Indara spent significantly more time honing her combat skills than her peers. As a result, her command of the Force allowed her to engage in combat easily. Under the tutelage of her Jedi Master, Indara learned about the fighting forms of various cultures. As a result of her training, Indara was also proficient in operating spacecraft such as Jedi Vectors. However, Indara's Jedi Master maintained that his apprentice's performance was subpar in most regards. In response, Indara strove for perfection in every task she undertook, even after her confidence in her skills was shaken following the Farlingan Collapse.[4]

Indara's lightsaber

Indara's lightsaber

When Force-wielding in combat, Indara perceived the Force as similar to a static shock running through her veins. By the time she was a Jedi Knight, Indara was adept at using telekinesis to throw objects at her opponents in combat. Indara could also wield the Force against opponents directly by using the Force to push or lift them. In combat, Indara used the Force to sense incoming blaster bolts, dodge them, and parry them back at her opponents at deadly angles. Physically fit, the Jedi Knight could use the Force to augment her speed and use the Force for energy similar to adrenaline. She also could control her body temperature with a technique Rwoh taught her.[4]

Indara's expertise as a Jedi archivist was regularly praised by her colleagues and supervisor, particularly her attention to detail and ability to efficiently pivot into new research angles. However, Indara disagreed with their assessment, not believing in her abilities as a Jedi. During her time as an archivist, Indara completed several extensively detailed treatises and reports on historical events, maintaining a keen memory of what she had studied. Her skills with research terminals lent efficiency to investigations. While working with Rwoh, the Jedi Master taught Indara new Force-based skills, such as regulating her body temperature using the Force. Indara was quick-witted and able to adapt to an active combat situation, even when a lightsaber nullifier impaired her lightsaber's function. By the end of her and Rwoh's investigation into the lightsaber nullifiers, Indara regained confidence in her abilities with the Jedi Master's help and assurance of the former's capabilities. When needed, Indara was capable of spying on others. The Jedi Knight proved capable of fighting gheriols even when poisoned and hands bound, coming up with an inventive solution to escape their grasp.[4]

Indara was adept at both armed and hand-to-hand combat.

Indara was a powerful[35] Jedi Master possessing refined physical and mental skills. Having been trained by the Jedi Order, she could engage in combat easily[36] with a higher tolerance for Force-usage than in her younger days.[4] Indara managed to train at least one Padawan—Torbin[6]—who eventually became a Jedi Master after finishing his training[22] under Indara.[6] Though she did not seek out conflict, she could use her defensive skills to protect others from harm while also keeping awareness of her surroundings, such as when an assailant attempted to take her lightsaber.[36]

During her time on Brendok, Indara proved able to lead[14] the Jedi under her command[38] as they searched for a vergence for several weeks. The Jedi Master was able to pilot a starship, use its comms systems, and utilize various types of equipment, such as scanners and analyzers. When the Brendok witches exerted a Thread ability on Kelnacca to force him to attack his colleagues, Indara Force leapt and tackled the dominated Wookiee, then countered the spell by concentrating her prowess of the Force after knocking him to the ground. The moment the Jedi Master broke the coven's concentration and freed Kelnacca from their spell, the witches lifelessly collapsed.[14]

On Ueda, Indara used telekinesis to save Cabuck from being stabbed with a knife by halting the weapon mid-air and also moments before used the ability to prevent a hostage from falling to the floor from a story above. The Jedi Master was adept at hand-to-hand combat[7] by using controlled[31] defensive maneuvers, able to dodge many weapons thrown at her by moving to avoid them or slicing them in pieces with her lightsaber in an attack stance.[7] Her combat maneuvers were defined by their graceful precision and minimization of wasted effort.[1] Indara was physically able to complete acrobatic maneuvers to scale distances and quickly move to different levels of a structure.[31]

As a Jedi, Indara occasionally flew Jedi Vectors, though she and her Master preferred using more utilitarian vessels when available. During her time as a Jedi archivist, Indara took pride in keeping her Jedi robes and boots pristine, unlike the messier ensembles she donned as a Padawan. Her duties as an archivist required her to regularly access various types of terminals and datapads to connect and search through records in the Jedi Archives.[4] Around 160 BBY,[12] her set of robes acquired several holes after fighting pirates on Cerifsis, which Rwoh was pleased about, having wanted to take Indara on an adventure. After Garn's death, Indara and Rwoh used evidence from his holo-emitter to track Jackard.[4]

On Brendok, Indara wore yellow Jedi robes featuring a darker yellow undertunic. She paired the outfit with a brown cloak, a dark-colored utility belt with maroon edging, and a gold buckle[6] bearing the Jedi Order's insignia,[39] which was fastened to a standard Jedi utility belt.[1] Indara also used light-colored thread to keep her hair secured behind her head,[6] carried a brown shoulder bag, and wore black gloves featuring fasteners. For several weeks on Brendok, Indara worked alongside her fellow Jedi to look for a vergence on the world using various equipment. The Jedi Master utilized a long-handled ground terrain scanner and a different soil sampler scanner mounted on a post, the data of which ported to a datapad. Indara's group of Jedi also used a ship on Brendok, which featured comms technology,[14] a portable conference table with a holoprojector, and a Jedi testing screen. The four Jedi on Brendok also had access to two Jedi outland speeder bikes for scouting the world's dense forests.[1]

Years later, on Ueda, she wore multi-layered ivory-colored Jedi robes featuring delicate pleating[40] and a synth-leather chestpiece with a hook-and-bar spiral closure.[1] The Jedi Master also donned brown utility belt with a gold-colored buckle, and pleated brown boots. Her undertunic featured a slight ribbing pattern, while her overtunic was made of rougher, more structured material.[40] She also donned a billowing brown cloak, as its flowy nature could help obscure her stance to confound opponents.[1] The Jedi Master owned a silver-colored comlink.[7] Indara wielded a lightsaber with a verdant green blade,[4] built with a kyber crystal from Ilum.[1] It had a gold-and-silver hilt[7] with a coppery finish, an emitter shroud denoting her cautious demeanor, and power cell charge indicators.[1] She kept the weapon attached to her belt to symbolize the Jedi's role as guardians of peace in the galaxy.[41]

Behind the scenes

Milestones

"Having the opportunity to work on a Star Wars production was something I don't think I ever imagined that I would do. What I love about the approach that Leslye did in telling this story, is that we see it from two perspectives. Anything has multiple perspectives. As a human being I'm interested in that."

Filming for The Acolyte

Filming for The Acolyte

Indara first appeared in "Lost / Found," the first episode of the live-action Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte,[7] which aired on June 4, 2024.[43] She was visually depicted in a Celebration Europe-exclusive trailer[44] released during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase on April 7, 2023. Carrie-Anne Moss's casting for the role was revealed in a StarWars.com article the following day.[45] Indara was first identified by name in a StarWars.com article on March 18, 2024, that announced The Acolyte's first publicly available trailer and the series' premiere date.[43]

A May 4, 2024, StarWars.com article revealing The Acolyte's final trailer and poster art indicated that Torbin was Indara's Padawan.[46] However, the information had been removed from the article by May 7.[47] Torbin was later confirmed to have been Indara's Padawan in events set prior to The Acolyte's main storyline that were depicted in the third episode of the series, "Destiny,"[6] which was released on June 11, 2024.[48]

Indara's name was misspelled as "Inara" in the 131st issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine, in the "Launchpad" section.[49] The issue was published on April 29, 2025.[50]

Filming

"It was unusual, like I wasn't used to that. Because I'd been in other big stuff but like when you walk out of your trailer and go to set you have to cover your costume. And I would forget, and so someone would run after me and throw a robe over me and I'd be like 'oh I'll remember tomorrow' and then, I would forget."

Indara's stunt double, Katie McDonnell,[7] practiced lightsaber choreography with Moss for the role,[52] with the latter copying the movements of the former.[51] As part of her role, McDonnell—portraying Indara—worked on scenes for the Ueda duel, remarking after the show's release that Moss had excelled with that fight's choreography[53] and commended the latter's dedication.[54] Meanwhile, as stunt double, she had been tossed into the noodle establishment's wall.[53] On Brendok, McDonnell also completed the scene in which Indara tackled Kelnacca by putting him in a leg grab. The scene was rehearsed for a long time to get the grab and subsequent fall done right.[55] Like the rest of The Acolyte, Indara's scenes were filmed on practical sets and limited usage of CGI to honor Headland's vision.[56] Moss spent around three weeks training for the role leading up to the series' production in action and stunt combat preparation,[35] finding the process extremely physically exhausting due to the short timeframe.[57] Despite her initial struggles, Moss became much more comfortable with the physical aspect of the role by the last week of her training. Ultimately, filming for all of Indara's scenes lasted three months.[58] Similar to her co-star, the first fight sequence Stenberg and her stunt double[59]Kellina Rutherford[60]—learned for The Acolyte was also the noodle shop duel against Indara.[59]

Carrie-Anne Moss and Katie McDonnell practiced Indara's choreography together.

Moss indicated that one of the primary reasons she wanted to portray Indara was the opening fight scene of the series[42] on Ueda,[7] as she had not done acting work with that level of choreography in a long time[42] and considered it a deep responsibility.[61] She considered the scene to be the favorite one she had filmed for the show,[62] despite how tiring the training for it had been.[63] Moss was passionate about making sure she used her lightsaber properly while filming, wanting to do it exactly right. She would practice with a baton in her hotel to prepare, and participated in reshoots until the scene was perfect, considering it one of the most stressful parts of the performance.[58] In an interview, Moss noted that while traveling to and from set, she was required to cover her costume to maintain confidentiality. The actor found it an unusual practice and often forgot to do so, resulting in a production staff member chasing after her to bring a robe on some occasions.[51]

The scene where Indara tackled Kelnacca to the ground was filmed in a warehouse at Arborfield Film Studios, which was an old military base in the United Kingdom.[55] Meanwhile, the campfire scene with the Brendok Jedi—including Indara—was filmed at Pinewood Studios[64] in the United Kingdom,[65] and other scenes on Brendok were shot in Wales. The entrance to the Brendok fortress was shot at Upper Neuadd Reservoir and Dam in Wales, and interior shots were filmed at Shinfield Studios,[64] England.[66] Interior shots of the Jedi's transport ship, as well as the interior scenes in the Lomi Usqi Noodle Shop,[67] were also shot at Shinfield Studios.[64][67] The site of the Jedi ship[68] and the locations where the Jedi explored and catalogued Brendok[65] were also filmed at Upper Neuadd Reservoir.[65][68]

Casting

"Oh, it was such an exciting call to get. Actually, my husband and children watch all the Star Wars shows. They're watching it, and I'm carrying a bunch of clothes upstairs to put in people's closets. My husband calls out, "You should be on one of those shows!' And literally two weeks later, I got the call."

Moss enjoyed the method series creator Leslye Headland's used to create The Acolyte's story, finding multiple perspectives shown in the narrative particularly interesting. The actor was excited to be part of a Star Wars production and had not imagined doing so in the past.[42] Though she knew Star Wars was a lore-heavy franchise, she sought to bring her character to life in her own way by staying open minded and trusting her director.[57] She found portraying a Jedi to be "incredible,"[69] honored to be part of a franchise that has impacted many people, including her family, who were excited to see the series upon its release.[62] In the past, her family had often joked about her taking on a Star Wars role, with Moss noting that in one instance, they had done so, and she had gotten the call to be in The Acolyte two weeks later.[58]

One of her sons is a Star Wars fan, and she asked both him and Headland a lot of questions to feel grounded in the universe's lore.[70] She immediately accepted the role upon offer wanting to pour her heart and soul into the character because of her appreciation for Headland's work. Moss felt that her fight scene had a story in it, specifically calling out Indara's "containment" as an aspect she liked, in that the character had power in her but moreso that her true power came from strict control and prowess over her abilities, rather than letting loose and wild, and to make it look effortless.[58] The actor enjoyed her character's fierce demeanor and sense of humanity[35] and at one point spoke to Pablo Hidalgo while preparing for the role.[58] In an interview The Acolyte's launch premiere for cast, press, and select fans on May 23, 2024, Moss expressed her hopes for fans to enjoy the journey, story, and action the series' characters would engage in.[71]

Showrunner thoughts

"This was a big question when we were working on the episode. To me, it was very important because it told two stories. One, that Indara, despite her being completely and utterly the consummate Jedi in this episode, I did feel it was important that she also misjudged something. If we were going to explore those themes, she couldn't just be this infallible Jedi, she also had to have something else going on with her. And I think what she did is, in the moment, in trying to sever the connection between Kelnacca and the witches, she dealt with a power that she did not understand and was unfamiliar with."
―Leslye Headland, about Indara's actions in "Destiny"[21]
The Acolyte's showrunner, Leslye Headland, created Indara.

The Acolyte's showrunner, Leslye Headland, created Indara.

Headland was inspired by Trinity from The Matrix, who was portrayed by Moss, hence why her casting in the show was "no-brainer" as Hedland wanted the audience to see Indara as one of the most powerful Jedi in the room by perceiving her like "Trinity with a lightsaber." Moss felt hooked by Headland's vision for the show in the same way she felt connected to her projects with Christopher Nolan and the Wachowskis, enjoying playing a Jedi Master and training to do so, acknowledging that her role as Indara made her realize how much she loves the action genre and aims to make her part perfect.[72]

Moss has expressed that the nature of the Force was an intriguing concept, particularly how Jedi could train to use the Force as a "kung-fu" style force field within the story of a fight.[73] The showrunner felt that the fast paced scenes with a lot of physical exertion made the scenes feel more visceral to the audience, stating that Moss was able to perfectly stay on-beat with her death scene.[74]

Concerning Indara's actions in "Destiny," Headland has stated that the Jedi Master did not know her actions to save Kelnacca would result in the deaths of the witches controlling him. The showrunner felt that—though Indara was otherwise depicted as a model Jedi Master—it had been important for her to misjudge at least one thing. She felt that the character felt so strongly about saving Kelnacca in the moment that she did not consider the ramifications interfering with such power could have, having only been worried about what the witches could do her colleague after the unnerving control they had displayed over Torbin previously. The showrunner also discussed the differences between Sol and Indara's views on how to proceed after the Council denied their request to take the twins to Coruscant, noting that while the former was correct in a human and fatherly aspect, the latter had been acting as a Jedi should.[21]

Amandla Stenberg felt that Carrie-Ann Moss took her under her wing while they filmed the noodle shop duel as Mae-ho and Indara, respectively.

The actor Manny Jacinto, who portrayed Qimir, felt that bringing in Moss from an iconic franchise such as The Matrix showed audiences that The Acolyte would be a new and fresh type of Star Wars not seen before.[74] Charlie Barnett, Fandar's actor—agreed with Moss's statement that the noodle shop duel was one of her favorite scenes in the series. He particularly highlighted Moss's prowess of the Force in the fight sequence as Indara, joking that she was a "strong, wise Jedi."[62]

Amandla Stenberg[69]—who portrayed Mae-ho and Verosha in The Acolyte[7]—said she nearly had a heart attack upon learning the first person she would fight in the show would be Moss. Stenberg indicated that she knew Moss had been in The Matrix franchise[69] portraying Trinity, a character Stenberg considered one of science fiction's most powerful and intimidating characters. Despite her anxiety over their characters fighting, Stenberg also felt Moss kindly took her under her wing while they filmed Indara and Mae's scenes together.[75]

Moss, meanwhile, stated that training for the fights needed for filming was a very special experience to share, expressing that Stenberg was dedicated to her performance.[69] She was also was fond of her co-star Lee Jung-jae's portrayal of Sol, finding that his acting had a lot of heart in it to make scenes feel genuine.[76] As part of the show's promotional releases, Moss and her fellow cast members participating in an unboxing video on the official Star Wars YouTube channel for The Acolyte-themed Hasbro Star Wars: The Black Series figurines of their characters.[77] Later, Moss expressed her surprise after learning The Acolyte had been canceled. However, she noted that since her character had already died in the first season, she was not as emotionally invested in the project continuing as she had not expected Indara to reappear[78] and did not spend a lot of time thinking about it not being renewed.[79] She also indicated surprise at fans' vitriol at her character's death, saying that she had known Indara would die upon taking the role but did not think about how it would impact fans.[80]

Development

An intentional cold open

"From a filmmaker perspective, I just felt like with the cold open, especially with a new story, that you just have to go hard. […] It just has to be a moment where the emotional and the physical—meaning the fights–melt together. Carrie-Anne, not just being an action legend, is also a phenomenal actress. She was able to play all those beats within the fight as well as, of course, her death scene."
―Leslye Headland[74]
The martial arts Kill Bill franchise heavily influenced the choreography of Indara's fatal duel.

The martial arts Kill Bill franchise heavily influenced the choreography of Indara's fatal duel.

In the script for "Lost / Found"'s cold open, Headland described Indara's demeanor on Ueda as relaxed and controlled, similar to[81] the Jedi Master[82] Obi-Wan Kenobi or the character O-Ren Ishii from the Kill Bill franchise,[81] a martial arts movie series.[83] Though Headland understood why some fans may have found Indara's death shocking, she indicated that it was important for the Jedi to be able to lose, making them not infallible.[74] Headland's background as a television writer inspired her decision to have Indara's death scene as a cold open.[84]

The showrunner was particularly fond of the cold open to the television series Breaking Bad, and while thinking about what version of that she could put in her own show, settled on killing Moss's character to shock those who would recognize the actor and the parallels between her character Trinity in The Matrix.[84] The actor indicated that she always knew her character would die in the opening scenes of The Acolyte, stating that Headland had wanted her death to impact the audience.[57]

"In this fight, I thought it was important to show that Mae's sort of testing Indara in her own way. She's making sure that Indara's always going to be a Jedi and that she's going to protect the innocent."

Action designer and second unit director Christopher Clark Cowan indicated that Mae-ho and Indara's duel intentionally depicted the assassin trying to attack Indara without a weapon first, before raising the stakes and using knives after being unable to land blows on the Jedi Master. Cowan felt that the duel scene depicted Mae-ho trying to test Indara's resolve to protect innocents throughout the fight, as the Jedi otherwise was only acting defensively.[30]

Cowan also expressed that it was important for Mae-ho to realize that Indara would always do the right thing. Cowan then noted that after Mae-ho realized Indara would stay on the defensive, she uses that to her advantage to take her out, albeit in a way she did not prefer. The unit director particularly commented on his pleasure working with Moss during filming, having been a fan of Moss in The Matrix.[60] Lu Junchang, an assistant fight coordinator for The Acolyte, noted that extensive wire work and Force pushes were used in the scene to set a standard for the rest of the series' fights.[30]

Indara's scene on Ueda was inspired by[85] the film[86] Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as both it and The Acolyte feature fast, high-flying martial arts choreography.[85] Headland's input on the choreography was also influenced the Kill Bill franchise, and elements of that franchise were seen when Mae-ho swiftly jumped away from Indara and onto the noodle shop's second floor.[30] The showrunner's crew worked hard to incorporate heavy elements of hand-to-hand combat and martial arts into every major fight scene,[63] including Indara's on Ueda,[7] while also striving to make each combat sequence in The Acolyte unique to viewers.[87] Each movement in the fight was planned out months prior to filming digital pre-visualization and motion capture technology over the course of a week from stunt coordinator Mark Ginther's studio. Ginther expressed appreciation for the work Moss put in to learn the complex lightsaber and fight choreography for the noodle shop scene given the limited timeframe she had.[60]

Indara's duel's music

"…it's really primitive, but also a bit kinetic. Then, when the lightsaber is drawn, there's a harkening back to traditional Star Wars language there. And then finally, you here a theme that I call the theme of profound loss. And it happens as we watch Indara die. And it becomes a crucial theme throughout the series, and we hear it at points whenever a character is thinking about or experiencing a profound loss."

Composer Michael Abels created the themes used in Indara's scenes on Ueda.

Composer Michael Abels, who created the musical score for The Acolyte, indicated that the music in the noodle shop fight sequence was intended to have a kinetic and slightly primitive energy throughout Indara and Mae's fight. Having felt the fight's musical theming was crucial for setting the rest of The Acolyte's tone, he informed Headland that he did not wish to work on the sequence first while doing work for the series.[88]

Abels noted that when Indara drew her lightsaber in the scene, the stakes of the skirmish were raised to a new level, echoing the traditional themes of Star Wars music.[42] The composer described the music that played when Indara died as a "theme of profound loss," which he indicated would be used in other parts of the series in the future when other characters felt or experienced the same emotions.[88]

The Acolyte: Wayseeker

"…and I think it's for me I wanted to say Indara, you know, like Indara—is this very closed off person—but what if she wasn't always like that? What if, in the beginning, she tried to be a little more open, and then it kinda backfired."
―Justina Ireland about Indara, in an interview — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[89]

Indara appeared in the novel The Acolyte: Wayseeker,[4] a tie-in book for The Acolyte written by Justina Ireland that was released on May 6, 2025.[90] On December 17, 2024,[91] Random House Worlds Senior Editor[92] Tom Hoeler teased her role in the work, mentioning that there were "many lovely moments" with Indara and Rwoh within[91] and that he felt Ireland's work delving into Indara's mindset, past, and journey to becoming a Jedi Master was amazing.[93] As part of the teased information, Hoeler released an unattributed quote from the novel.[94] Wayseeker itself later revealed the speaker of the quote to be Indara.[4]

When conceptualizing Indara's character arc for Wayseeker, Ireland took notes on aspects of the Jedi Master's demeanor in The Acolyte, including how tough and closed off she was. In this respect, the author wanted to write a younger Indara that was very insecure and very much an "open book." As she was writing the book, The Acolyte was canceled, thus allowing Ireland greater freedom to explore specific aspects of Indara's character. Ireland felt that Indara's master was often critical of her, something the author reflected was not brought up in conversations among the Jedi. The author felt that this strictness did not necessarily make Indara's master a bad person but still affected the woman Indara eventually became. Ireland intended for Indara to try to be more open during Wayseeker, noting that the approach eventually backfired for the Jedi, thus putting the character down a path in which she would become the strict and controlled Jedi Master seen in The Acolyte. The author enjoyed the idea of archivist librarians in the Jedi Order seeing more action outside of their regular duties and was particularly fond of archivists' role in preserving important historical information for their institutions. Ireland hoped that Indara's story would be continued via other media.[89]

Ireland felt that writing Rwoh's scenes in first person helped better show the Jedi Master's internal realization that she needed to shift her approach with Indara, as the latter grew to dislike her patronizing behavior. When writing, Ireland was only given the overarching plot and details for the first three episodes of The Acolyte. Knowing Indara's ultimate fate in the noodle shop, Ireland sought to make the younger Indara embody the least likely characteristics of Moss, which was ultimately that of a nervous and timid librarian. Later, the author watched the rest of the episodes to get more details on the character. Ireland wanted Indara to be a foil for Rwoh, finding it amusing that a Jedi Knight would have to be sent to get a Jedi Master.[95]

Costume development

Jedi robes

"Knowing that Master Indara was going to be the first Jedi that you saw in The Acolyte, I really wanted to still keep that essence of how we've seen them, that significant and memorable brown mission cloak. How she's hooded—I think it was a really great shot. Anyone who is a Star Wars fan, which for me is everybody on the planet, knows that that is a Jedi."
―Jennifer Bryan, on Indara's costume[40]
Indara's Jedi attire was based on Obi-Wan Kenobi's from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Indara's Jedi attire was based on Obi-Wan Kenobi's from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

The Acolyte's costume designer, Jennifer Bryan, created Indara's Jedi attire and other costume elements,[40] with assistant costume designer Carly Griffith also contributing to the ensemble.[96] Bryan sought to make the Jedi Master recognizably a Jedi to anyone who saw her—both in-universe and outside of it—by having her don the classic brown Jedi robes that were first worn by Obi-Wan Kenobi in[40] the 1977 original trilogy film[82] Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The ivory coloring of Indara's Ueda Jedi robes beneath her cloak was inspired by Princess Leia Organa's white dress from the original trilogy. The designer felt that the scene of Indara in her hood on Ueda was particularly memorable and liked its finished result, having designed her costume by keeping in mind that the Jedi Master would be the first Jedi depicted in the series.[40]

The leather doublet of Indara's costume featured topstitching matching the tunic beneath.

The leather doublet of Indara's costume featured topstitching matching the tunic beneath.

A structured leather doublet was constructed for Moss to give her more support, using stiff material that featured topstitching matching the delicate pleating of her undertunic and the micro pleating of her boots. Aside from their stylistic qualities, Bryan created all components of Indara's costume with utility in mind to suit The Acolyte's action choreography.[40] Moss noted that the boning in the costume injured her at some points because it restricted the movement of her back. Though the actor did not often feel the pain while in character, she often needed to recover from filming each night due to the costume's constraints.[58]

Lightsaber filming

"I decided to focus on the lightsaber ignites and steady hums. For ignites, the base sound is a remastered version of a classic lightsaber ignite. In addition, I recorded and then processed various paper tears, as well as added an explosive element to give it more weight. For the steady hums, I used Ben's original hum, but pitched it differently for different characters. I then ran the pitched hum through a plugin that added a small amount of feedback distortion, which gave the hum a slightly grittier quality."
―Kimberly Patrickm on the lightsabers used in The Acolyte, which included Indara's[42]
Indara's lightsaber was displayed in the Lucasfilm Pavillion at San Diego Comic Con.

According to sound designer Kimberly Patrick, the sound emitted when all lightsabers used in the series ignite,[42] including Indara's lightsaber,[7] was customized by the VFX efforts of Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound after starting as a version of the classic lightsaber ignition sound. For the steady humming sound produced by an active lightsaber blade, Patrick used a modified version of the sound from Kenobi's lightsaber in the original trilogy, using various methods to slightly distort and alter the pitch for different characters.[42]

The Jedi Master's lightsaber was displayed alongside several others at The Acolyte's press premiere on May 23, 2024,[71] as well as in the Lucasfilm Pavillion at San Diego Comic Con,[97] held from July 25 to July 28 of the same year.[98] Much of the center glow lighting of Indara's lightsaber was added after filming, as actors had filmed with a new, hybrid type of lightsaber not previously used in Star Wars productions. Though Headland wished to have at least some light reflecting off characters faces in filming to have a further depth of realism, she realized that lighter props, such as the ones used in the prequel trilogy, were necessary to make them usable.[56] The showrunner personally selected the lightsaber colors for each original character in The Acolyte,[99] which included Indara,[7] based on the aesthetic of what the scene needed and the character's personality.[99]

Concept artwork milestones

"Initially we had a different Production Designer who wanted to really explore a very different approach to the design of the sabers, as this was the height of the Republic we decided to look in to old duelling pistols and a more deliberate Baroque style as if each saber was bespoke built for the user."
―Adam Burn, in his post releasing the concept artwork for Indara's lightsaber[100]

Several initial concept artwork pieces of Indara's lightsaber was created by artist Adam Burn as one of his first projects for The Acolyte. He noted that the first production designer attached to the lightsabers' creation wanted to explore a unique approach to their design, and had the artistic team look into old dueling pistoles and details from the Baroque architectural style to make each one unique for its user. One design featured an intricately carved half black and half gold hilt with an emitter shield, activation button, two variants of holster attachments, and a cerulean blue blade. A second design featured many similarities but instead added more rod-like framing around the hilt and replaced the carving with a cord-like grip section.[100]

Burn's third lightsaber design was a curved, white marble hilt with a blue blade that illuminated from the inside when ignited, which featured gold leaf patterning and a black and gold hilt base. His last two blue-bladed concept artwork pieces featured a version of Indara's lightsaber with an almost entirely black hilt with faint gold overlay on top, while the other featured a solid white marble hilt with a gold base and latticed top detailing.[100] Burn also released the refined concept artwork for Indara's lightsaber, noting that several details from the initial concepts had been simplified, while still keeping the "bespoke" aspects of them. Each of the refined concepts were then 3-D printed. Of the six designs the artist posted, most bore gold, silver, black, and gun metal gray coloring, with some bearing square shaped hilts and others being round. The artwork pieces each had a blue blade, either lattice work or ribbing, and some had grips or decorative carvings.[101] The final version of Indara's lightsaber was a silver-and-gold round hilt with a blue blade.[7]

Four concept artwork pieces of Indara's costumes were created by artist Eleanor Barlow. Two featured her in light-colored Jedi robes, with one also having a brown, hooded Jedi cloak. The second pair of concept artwork pieces featured Indara in layered, yellow Jedi attire, with one having a cloak and one remaining without.[102] Artist Vincent Jenkins created two pieces of concept art for the Brendok campfire scene, which included Indara and the other Jedi sitting together.[103][104] Under the direction of production designer Kevin Jenkins, artist Adam Brockbank created a piece of concept artwork depicting Mae-ho standing over a dying Indara during the Ueda duel scene.[105] In July 2024, more pieces of the duel scene were displayed at Lucasfilm's Star Wars booth at San Diego Comic Con.[106]
