"What fun would life be without surprises?"
―Deva Lompop[6]

Deva Lompop was a Shani female bounty hunter, marauder, and mercenary who operated from the time of the High Republic into the Imperial Era. By the time of the Galactic Empire, Lompop had a debt to Jabba the Hutt that amounted to more than credits and caused Lompop to be routinely summoned by the Hutt gangster for various missions. Eventually, Lompop worked with the criminal organization Crimson Dawn.

Biography

With the Nihil

In 230 BBY,[8] during the High Republic Era, Deva Lompop was a member of the marauders known as the Nihil and served under Tempest Runner Kara Xoo. She was placed in charge of handling the children kidnapped by Xoo's Tempest, including Avon Starros, and caught Starros when she first tried to escape, delivering her to Zadina Mkampa and threatening to eat the girl if she tried again.[3] While with the Nihil, she helped the Nautolan girl Vroma stop bullies from taking a durga berry meant for the girl's mothers, and then launched an attack on Hon-Tallos.[9]

Dangerous debt

"«This is not a matter of money, Deva, and I know you know that.»"
―Jabba the Hutt[6]

At some point, Jabba the Hutt saved Lompop's life, leaving her in his debt that transcended monetary compensation.[6] At one point, Lompop employed a group of at least six bounty hunters to assassinate the Culisetto warlord Cribiriz Idollax, offering a lump sum to whichever individual was responsible for the kill. The group of hunters included 4-LOM and Zuckuss, who eliminated who they thought was Cribiriz but was actually their sibling Sribiriz, and emerged from the mission as a team.[10] At another time, Lompop became romantically involved with the Zabrak arms dealer Jarm Brock.[6]

By the time of the Imperial Era, Lompop had moved on from bounty hunting to other work as an information broker operating out of the Dalnan sector. Despite her change in career, she was frequently pulled away from her work by Jabba's request. On one occasion, she was invited to Jabba's Palace and coerced into joining the bounty hunter Boba Fett in a hunt for Brock, who Jabba believed was attacking his men under the orders of Bokku, who, like Jabba, was a member of the Grand Hutt Council. Jabba promised to finally lift Lompop's debt to him, although Lompop had her doubts that the Hutt was telling the truth. Fett and Lompop tracked down Brock in the town of Mos Entha and engaged in a firefight, which ended with Fett cornering Brock and Lompop killing Brock's men. However, Lompop betrayed Fett, stabbing him with a poisoned dagger and knocking him unconscious, though not before he burned her with his flamethrower. Lompop interrogated Brock, revealing that the Zabrak had in fact been hired by Crimson Dawn, rather than by Bokku. Lompop proceeded to unhinge her jaw and eat Brock alive, leaving only his head, which she delivered to Jabba. The Hutt refused to clear Lompop's debt as he had promised, citing the fact that Brock had not been returned alive.[6]

Some time later, Jabba called Lompop in to aid in the hunt for the carbonite-frozen smuggler Han Solo, though she secretly had contacted Crimson Dawn with the hope of killing Jabba. Tracking Boba Fett to the moon of Nar Shaddaa, she learned from a bystander that an individual with similar armor to Fett had contacted the Besalisk Doc Ragon. She found Ragon at a bar and seduced him into getting drunk and revealing that he had been paid to inspect by Fett to fix the carbonite matrix containing Solo. Lompop informed both Jabba and Crimson Dawn of Fett's location, after observing him enter a tavern, for which she was paid. The Crimson Dawn official Margo promised Lompop a chance to kill the Hutt sometime in the future.[6]

Working for Crimson Dawn

Lompop later traveled to Ord Mantell and completed a bounty for Gyuti, where she also encountered the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh. Lompop warned Boushh that his bad blood with Black Sun would cost him, and that if he was unlucky she would be sent to deal with him.[11] Lompop continued to work in the employ of Crimson Dawn, hiring RB-919 on their behalf to restore the destroyed IG-series assassin droid IG-88. After the rebuilt IG-88 killed RB-919, the droid contacted Lompop, who gave him a mission to pursue Boba Fett.[7]

Working with the Starros clan

Circa 3 ABYY[12], Lompop was hosting a party in the Dalnan sector when Sana Starros, Mevera, and Thea showed up.[13] She met with them as they asked for her help in retrieving the data cube containing Avon Starros' research that was taken by Phel Starros. After Sana left angrily, she found her talking to Lanitra by the bar. Lompop informed Lanitra that her favor was being granted and that they would leave for Hon-Tallos shortly. Lanitra asked why Lompop had changed her mind, and she responded that she had found some help for the job. Sana asked Lompop why she cared about the Starros Clan. The Shani told her that a long time ago she made a promise to watch over the clan like it was her own.[4]

Lompop travelled to Hon-Tallos along with the Starros women and Lanitra to Wild Wollina's Animal Adventures. She purchased admission to the zoo and waited for Lanitra to start a distraction. A hragscythe was released in the park, and Sana and Lompop went to prevent it from harming innocents. While Sana saved Outrie, Lompop jumped onto the creature and stabbed it with her poisoned blades. After subduing the creature, they went to the rancor breeding pens. Lompop instructed Sana to pour juvenile rancor urine over herself in order to trick the rancor they were stealing into thinking Sana was her cub. As they left, Sana asked Lompop why she didn't have to douse herself in urine and the Shani told her that the rancor recognized her as a predator and would not attack her. On their way out, the pair were confronted by Wollina and Marl Jibs. Lompop attacked Wollina for breaking their contract and breeding the rancor named Nussi that Lompop had provided to the zoo. Afterwards, she met up with Sana and the Genetian Collective as they prepared to take the animals from the zoo and transport them to freedom. She teased Sana about smelling badly. When Sana got a call from Mevera telling her that her grandmother was taken hostage by Jibs, Lompop observed that the Starroses had a knack for getting kidnapped.[4] They returned to the Vector Bundle and travelled to Hynestia. Lompop checked with her Soikan contacts and determined they were not responsible for Jibs' kidnapping of Thea. Sana and Mevera argued about how to rescue their matriarch until Lompop interrupted them and told them her plan. They landed on Hynestria and Sana questioned Lompop about her plan. Lompop said it would probably fail and was mostly there just to get more information on the situation. Realizing that Sana was extremely stressed, Lompop instigated a fight with her to relax her. They proceeded to an old Jedi temple that was currently being used as a bar. Jibs sprung his ambush on them, causing Lompop and Sana to dive behind a bar to avoid fire. While there, Lompop helped herself to some durga berry schnapp. She laid down covering fire so that Sana could purse her grandmother's kidnappers. Outside, Sana was confronted by her brother who shot at her. Lompop knocked Sana aside, taking the blaster bolt. After the Imperials escaped, she consumed a downed snowtrooper to help herself recover.[14]

Lompop and Sana returned to space to rescue their family from the King's Ransom. They were joined by Hondo Ohnaka who had been contacted by Lompop to provide backup. When he attacked two TIE/IN interceptors, she took control of the Vector Bundle's ion cannons and disabled the starfighters for salvaging. The Vector Bundle landed in the hangar bay of the King's Ransom and Lompop vented the knockout gas that Lanitra had released on the ship. The pair stumbled across a group of stormtroopers and Lompop ordered Sana to go find her family while she worked on rescuing Lanitra who was pinned down by enemy fire. She made her way to Lanitra and her crew and helped eliminate the fire team when they were overwhelmed by Sana playing Chadra-Fan opera through the comm speakers in the helmets of the stormtroopers. She captured Cerasus Ehllo and forced him to take them to the Starros data cube. She stood outside while Sana greeted Aryssha Starros and her new babies. She unlocked and gave the data cube to Sana who decided it was too dangerous to have around and destroyed it despite it being priceless. She confirmed when Sana guessed that Lompop already had a buyer lined up for the captured Raider-class corvette. When Lanitra showed up and informed her that the galley was stocked with alcohol, she left to go get a drink.[15]

Personality and traits

"I hate cold food."
―Deva Lompop, prior to eating Jarm Brock[6]

Deva Lompop was sardonic and tenacious bounty hunter, renowned amongst those who knew her,[11] though some of her colleagues held her in contempt.[10] Lompop's remarks were often either threatening or joking, depending on her company. She enjoyed violence, once relishing in picking a fight with several individuals on Nar Shaddaa who cat-called her, going so far as to slay one with her retractable blade.[6] However, despite her lethal and menacing tendencies, she had an occasional sense of humor, and was shown to have at least some moral standards, having once aided the young Nautolan girl Vroma with her bully problem without seeking any payment,[9] and, while on a job with Boba Fett, offhandedly called Jabba a monster for his use of slave pits.[6] Lompop was also shown to be a faithful person when she helped the Starros family, whom she had promised to look after as if they were her own,[4] risking her life alongside them on their adventure. Though she would occasionally not take dire situations seriously, at one point even enjoying a drink while under gunfire.[14] As a cunning information broker, she had many employees and connections.[4]

Deva's motives for pursuing the bounty hunter's occupation likely stemmed from her enjoyment of her high class lifestyle, owning her own manor with attendants, and hosting parties for her many guests, of whom she considered to be working for her, whether they knew it or not.[4] When on the job, she was shown to be a keen strategist and leader, and a fearless combatant in the use of her blades and blaster, being able to match or even exceed the ability of Boba Fett, having apparently fought and taken down several of Jarm Brock's armed men while Boba Fett chased after three. She had a rivalry with Fett, despite reluctantly working together on a mission for Jabba. She regularly referred to Fett as "Pup."[6]

Like other members of the Shani people, Deva had sharp teeth and the ability to unhinge her jaw. It was rumored that her species could swallow sentients whole. She was unable to completely consume Jarm Brock's head due to his horns, but was seemingly able to eat a dead stormtrooper whom had been killed by Sana Starros. She was not shy about bringing up her species' reputation as man-eaters, remarking to Boba Fett that she usually ate her former romantic partners,[6] threatening to eat Avon Starros,[3] scaring a young bully who had been tormenting Vroma,[9] and once remarking that she'd look for someone to eat on Naboo after a job. She preferred her meals to be alive, once saying that she had a distaste for "cold" food, though she also enjoyed roast ghara bird served at Jabba's Palace.[6]

Equipment

"«The Lady Deva is quite the hunter.»"
Bib Fortuna[6]

Lompop carried a variety of weapons, including knives and blasters, which she could dual-wield with ease. During missions, she wore plated armor. Her gauntlets contained hidden blades, which on at least one occasion were coated with a nonfatal but incapacitating poison. She was able to drive a speeder. In addition to being a skilled fighter in hand-to-hand combat, she was familiar with more elaborate weaponry, including flesh-melting grenades.[6]

When not on a job, she would don an elaborate blue gown and a turban when relaxing in her home, tended to by her maids and workers.[6] For special occasions, she would dress in a luxurious white robe,[4] and when seducing targets while on a job, she would wear an alluring purple, feathered dress.[6]

Behind the scenes

"Deva was the product of my absolute love of feathered lizards and badass women. There is definitely something awesome about getting a chance to bring a High Republic character to the War of the Bounty Hunters, and for High Republic fans they should watch for Deva in upcoming works."
