Plot summary

Jedi Padawan Sav Malagán reminisces on the day in Takodana’s Jedi Temple when she first built her lightsaber with the power of The Force. What had begun as a powerful moment for the young Kyuzo was quickly ruined by a scolding from Sav’s Jedi Master Kaktorf, who chastised her for rushing through the process, and for not taking it as seriously as she should. Sav recalls this as the moment she realized she would never be a Jedi, as her rebellious nature and desire to question the rules stood in direct contrast to her Master’s over-seriousness.

In the present, Sav is undercover with criminal gang The Dank Graks, hoping to rescue the kidnapped pirate Maz Kanata. Having newly joined the gang under fake name Bazrip Ratht, she is accompanying them to Jedha, where the Dank Graks have been hired, along with others, by Path of the Open Hand leader Mother Elecia Zeveron. The mother’s aim is to disrupt peace negotiations between warring Outer Rim planets Eiram and E’ronoh, and to delegitimize the Jedi. She runs through the streets with Iridonian Zabrak Saya Keem, who tells Sav that she had left her homeworld due to the rigidity of Iridonian culture, a feeling that Sav can relate to as a reluctant Jedi.

The rest of Maz’s crew arrives to Jedha in the middle of a riot. While fighting through the crowd, the cyborg Alak frets about the wellbeing of pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn, his ex-lover for whom he still has feelings. He asks Dexter Jettster, who has a special relationship with Maz, how he knew that their connection was special, and Dex simply replies that she makes him smile on the inside. Meanwhile, Therm Scissorpunch admits to Coromont Vizzle that this is his first real battle: while he’s gotten into plenty of bar brawls, none of the stories that he’s told about his exploits have actually been true. Therm is reinvigorated by a pep-talk from Coromont’s court-appointed officer Rado, and fights off a whole horde of rioters in order to get the crew to the safety of the tapbar Enlightenment.

Sav and Saya encounter cultists from The Path of the Open Hand, who, Saya explains, believe that anybody who uses The Force is disrupting its balance. Saya remarks on the hypocrisy of the The Path teaming up with the Dank Graks, who openly use The Force, before a member of The Path notices Sav’s lightsaber and incites the crowd to attack the Jedi in their midst. Saya defends her, believing Sav’s lie that she killed a Jedi Master to get their saber, and the two use The Force to fight off the crowd before the arrival of Eirami troops, who force them to flee.

Nearby, Raf Thatchburn investigates with his Corellian Hound Tanteek, trying to piece together the possible connection between Maz’s crew, the Dank Graks, and the current events on Jedha. Tanteek runs off when she recognizes Sav’s scent, and tackles her to lick her face. Worried what will happen if Raf sees her with a Grak, Sav uses the force to cause some debris to fall, pushing Saya down and using the chaos as a cover to sneak her lightsaber into Tanteek’s mouth. When he receives the lightsaber, and having seen Sav with Saya through his binocs, Raf correctly guesses that Sav is sending him a message, and is touched that she trusts him enough to hand over such a sacred possession.
