Her secret safe for now, Jedi Padawan Sav Malagan [sic] begins to adjust to her life undercover on a ship full of pirates. But after coming face-to-face with the explosive consequences of her actions, Sav begins to wonder where her loyalties lie: with the Jedi Order, or her new friends?
Plot summary
Sav Malagán is undercover aboard The Venomed Scabbard, Maz Kanata’s ship, while Maz and her pirate crew pursue rival gang The Dank Graks. Nobody aboard knows she is a Jedi Padawan aside from Kanata’s associate Dexter Jettster, and he has promised to keep her secret. Even so, Sav reflects that she feels more like her real self as her pirate alter-ego than in her daily life in the Temple. The other crew members aboard the ship are the cyborg Alak, his protégée Quiet Shan, Nephran Therm Scissorpunch, serial criminal Coromont Vizzle, and the ship’s pilot, the Hoover Abadoo. Maz and her crew board the Dank Graks’ ship for some “rowdy reconnaissance” in order to learn more about the Dank Graks’ plans and possible co-conspirators, while Abadoo stays behind to upgrade the Venomed Scabbard’s hyperdrive.
Meanwhile, the Dank Graks, including Muun Drrn, Zabrak Saya Keem, and Cosian Lavalox Verzen, are on Geonosian leader Arkik Von’s ship The Grim Devourer. After sensing the Venomed Scabbard on their sensors, Von plans to secretly board Maz’s ship while her crew boards his own and leaves the Scabbard unattended.
Maz’s crew, finding the Devourer abandoned, breaks into teams: Quiet Shan and Therm will inspect the ship’s lower levels, Maz and Dex will search the bridge, and Alak, Coromont, and Sav will go to the gunner station. The trio encounter T-8T, the Dank Graks’ droid, who has a colorful vocabulary. While Alak dispatches the droid, Coromont fills Sav in on some gossip. Alak and the pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn were former lovers, the two having fallen for each other while investigating each other’s activities in the past. Sav also meets Coromont’s court-appointed officer, the tiny Rado. After his last trial, Rado was assigned to accompany Coromont at all times in order to cite him for any further lawbreaking, but since being present for these crimes would implicate him, Rado can only go as far as to scold the much larger pirate from a compartment on his back.
The rest of the crew join Maz and Dex on the bridge when the ship comes under fire from an unknown assailant. Due to the unfamiliar technology onboard the Grim Devourer, Maz and Dex are unable to tell who the shooters are, and because the attackers are behind them, they can’t be seen through the viewfinder. When the assailants finally come into view, Maz and her crew are shocked to learn that Maz’s ship, the Venomed Scabbard, now commandeered by the Dank Graks, is the one shooting at them. Defeated droid T-8T, whose head Alak now wears around his neck, tauntingly informs the crew that the ship is powered by Tund technology, which can only be controlled by a force user. Maz, who is force-sensitive, orders Coromont and Sav to try and get the guns working while she pilots the Devourer.
Sav is able to use The Force to operate the ship’s guns and return fire on the Dank Graks, who respond by engaging the Scabbard’s heavy artillery. Maz diverts all power to the Devourer’s forward shields, and the two spacecraft fly towards each other on a collision course until Raf Thatchburn arrives in his starfighter and fires on both of them, declaring both ships under violation of the Galactic Airspace Code of Conduct, and placing them under arrest by the authority of the Galactic Antipiracy Command. Both sets of pirates quickly escape into hyperspace. Now stuck on the Grim Devourer, Maz realizes that her pilot and mechanic Abadoo is still aboard the Venomed Scabbard, and vows to get her ship back. Maz pulls Sav aside, revealing she had known all along about her Jedi Padawan identity, and reiterates the danger that their current mission poses, but a starstruck Sav agrees to continue to accompany them.
