- "His lungs were shredded from working in a chemical mine when he was young."
- ―Alak, to his crewmates, on Raf Thatchburn
A chemical mine was in operation during the High Republic Era[1] on a mining planet where[2] the human[3] Raf Thatchburn grew up.[2] By 382 BBY,[4] when Thatchburn was young, he worked in the mine, which resulted in his lungs becoming shredded, forcing him to wear a breathing apparatus. While in a relationship with the pirate Alak, Thatchburn—by then working as an inspector and pirate hunter—told Alak about his time working in the mine.[1]
That year,[4] while fighting in the Battle of Jedha on[1] the Mid Rim moon[5] Jedha, Alak asked[1] his[3] crewmates if they thought Thatchburn had followed them to Jedha. After stating Thatchburn must have, Alak expressed his hope that the dust was not interfering with Thatchburn's breathing equipment, and then informed his crew of the inspector's consequences of working in the mine.[1]
