Plot summary
Jedi Padawan Sav Malagán, flying in a spiral-class Viz-Core Eviscerator, pursues the criminal group The Dank Graks, who have taken Maz Kanata captive on their ship the Grim Devourer. Posing as a Graf Family employee under the fake name Bazrip Ratht, Sav contacts Grand Grak Arkik Von over her comms, and asks to join their syndicate. Von insists that Sav first complete the “Trial of the Graks”, which Saya Keem claims he has only just made up. Since the Dank Graks consists of defectors from various Force Cults across the Galaxy, Sav’s first test is to tell Von which of these Cults she was previously a part of, and why she left. Sav already has an answer ready, having previously given a presentation for a class taught by Jedi Master Tera Sinube: Bazrip was once a member of The Central Isopter, and left because they lacked a sense of humor.
Before he can even finish describing the second trial, a demonstration of Force-sensitivity, Sav uses the force to lift Saya Keem, Drrn, and Lavalox Verzen into the air. For the final test of combat, Von unleashes a squadron of droids, which Sav quickly defeats with her lightsaber. When asked how she acquired it, Sav lies and says she killed Master Tera Sinube for it, a name Lavalox Verzen, a fellow Cosian, recognizes. Von begrudgingly makes Sav a provisional member of the Dank Graks, and tasks Saya Keem with getting her situated on their trip to Jedha.
Sav asks Saya why the Dank Graks are going to Jedha, and Saya tells her that they’ve gotten involved with “some weird cult guys”, who have tasked the Dank Graks, along with other groups, with causing as much trouble as possible and potentially starting a war on the moon. Sav excuses herself to the restroom to warn Maz’s crew of the Dank Graks’ plans over her comms, then rejoins Saya in the galley, where she learns that the young Zabrak does all the cooking for the crew, and Lavalox Verzen pranks Saya by force levitating a stool she was about to sit on. Saya then shows Sav the mens’ dormitory, where she reveals that she knows Bazrip’s “secret”: up until now, Von had assumed that Bazrip Ratht was male, but Saya had figured out that she was a girl. Relieved that her true identity has a Padawan hadn’t come to light, Sav says that as opposed to lying, she had really just allowed Von to live in the ignorance of his assumptions. Saya plays a prank on Drrn by force-throwing a mattress at him, and she and Sav run away. Sav notices the constant pranking onboard the Grim Devourer, and asks how Saya can live while having to constantly be on guard. Saya compares it to her previous home with a rich family on Coruscant, where the artifice and maneuvering of the planet’s political elite felt even more stressful. Finally, Saya gives Sav a sleeping pouch for the floor space the two of them will share from now on.
Aboard the Venomed Scabbard, Maz’s crew prepares to enter Jedha’s airspace. When Alak offers to let his ex-love, pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn, know about their current plans, the whole crew tries to persuade him not to, before arriving to see that the moon is a war zone: the Battle of Jedha has begun.
