The High Republic Adventures 1 is the first issue of the 2022 comic book series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. It was written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Toni Bruno and Michael Atiyeh, and published by Dark Horse Comics on November 30, 2022.

QUEST OF THE JEDI 
It is a time of great exploration. In an effort
to unite the galaxy, the Chancellors of the
Republic, working alongside the courageous
and wise Jedi Knights, have dispatched
dozens of PATHFINDER TEAMS into the
farthest reaches of the Outer Rim.

But it is also a time of great uncertainty.
Communication is unreliable, and tall tales
of mysterious planets and monstrous
creatures abound. Prospectors and
pirates roam the frontier, and the
worlds of Eiram and E'ronoh are locked
in a FOREVER WAR.

And on the far-off planet of DALNA,
a new threat to the galaxy is
beginning to emerge….

Plot summary

Savina Besatrix Malagán is a Kyuzo Jedi Padawan who trains at the Jedi Temple on Takodana. Rebellious, and tired of the rules of the Order, she frequently sneaks across Nymeve Lake to Takodana Castle, the stronghold of Pirate Queen Maz Kanata. Sav idolizes Kanata, as well as pirates Alak (and his prodigy Quiet Shan), Coromont Vizzle, and Therm Scissorpunch, and the prospector Dexter Jettster, who regales Kanata’s patrons with stories from across the galaxy.

After sneaking to the Castle one night, Sav happens across Alak, locked in a tense argument with pirate hunter Raf Thatchburn. Though she knows that the only rule of Kanata’s castle is “No fighting”, Sav relishes in the opportunity to cause some trouble, and force levitates a mug on the counter into the back of Raf’s head, triggering him and Alak into an all-out brawl. The fight is only broken up by the arrival of Maz, who chastises Alak and kicks Raf out of her tavern.

After a warm hug from Maz, Jettster leaves the castle, and, hoping to ask him how he decides whose stories are worth telling, Sav hurries after him, sneaking onto the ferry across the lake. When Jettster discovers her, he tells her to stay behind on the ferry while he continues to trail Raf Thatchburn, who Jettster believes has been acting suspiciously. Sav insists on tagging along, however, and when the two encounter Raf, he gives them the option to either fight him, or to assist him on spying on a meeting happening in the clearing up ahead.

As it turns out, Raf has been following Geonosian criminal Arkik Von, who has gathered a syndicate called the Dank Graks in order to rid Takodana of Maz and the Jedi order. Von’s enforcer droids sense the presence of intruders, and begin shooting on Dexter, Raf, and Sav, who return fire with their blasters. While fleeing the droids, Sav switches to her lightsabers, revealing to her companions that she was a Jedi the whole time, and the three take out the droids.

After separating from Raf, Dexter promises to keep Sav’s Jedi identity a secret, and tells Maz about the arrival of the Dank Graks, with whom she is already familiar. As Maz tells it, the Dank Graks are a group of rejects from minor force factions, and Arkik Von has held a grudge against Kanata for decades, believing that she conned him out of a valuable score: the planet Takodana itself. Maz assembles Alak, Quiet Shan, Vizzle, Scissorpunch, and Jettster to follow the Dank Graks offworld, and invites the overjoyed Sav to join them.
