"Who are those people with the speeder? Do you recognize them?"
"Yes. Members of a sect known as the Brothers of the Ninth Door. You can tell by the bone masks they wear. It's said they fashioned them from the skulls of their own dead."

The Brotherhood of the Ninth Door,[4] also known as the Brothers of the Ninth Door, was a secretive[1] dark side[3] religious sect local to[1] the Mid Rim moon[5] Jedha during the High Republic Era.[1]

History

Founding and Ancient Times

More than a millennium before 32 BBY a man named Sarasti Thel founded the Brotherhood on the belief that the Force was not divided in a light or dark aspect. He researched the origin of the Force and learned certain truths that he recorded on a scroll. The knowledge on this scroll was deemed too dangerous and was buried with Thel after his death, with his tomb hidden on a starship marooned in an asteroid field. The Brotherhood and its members grew and many shrines and temples were built across the galaxy.[2]

The Battle of Jedha

In 382 BBY,[6] a robed and masked member of the sect was present in the tapbar Enlightenment in Jedha City, and Temple of the Kyber adjunct Keth Cerepath took note of them among the many others in the bar that night.[1] Later, the Brotherhood helped Tilson Graf and the Path of the Open Hand cult incite the Battle of Jedha in the hopes of receiving the money to build themselves another temple. Members of the Brotherhood dueled and were defeated by Jedi Master Silandra Sho and Cerepath during the battle.[3]

The Brotherhood and its temple were destroyed during the Battle of Jedha, with only a handful of its members surviving.[2]

Twilight of the Galactic Republic

During the last decades of the Galactic Republic Jedi Master Dooku and his Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn came to Jedha City in search of the scroll of Sarasti Thel. Brotherhood member Minakatso followed the Jedi hoping that they would lead him to the scroll but he was forced to flee when he was confronted by Qui-Gon.[2]

Decades later Minakatso opened an ancient cave on Cerosha looking for the scroll but accidentally let loose a pack of Slovars, who captured him and terrorized the near city of Müch. Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn was sent to investigate and upon entering the cave he set Minakatso free and recognized him as the man from Jedha City. The two worked together to defeat the Slovars and Minakatso ran away to continue his search.[2]

Master Qui-Gon and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi finally found the Tomb of Sarasti Thel and the scroll hidden in it. They were soon reunited with Minakatsu who was still searching for the scroll and Qui-Gon attacked him to keep him away from the scroll, but soon realized that he was acting on prejudice and ordered Obi-Wan to stop fighting. Minakatsu then destroyed the scroll and told the young Jedi about the history of his sect and the dangerous knowledge on the scroll before leaving, having fulfilled his vow.[2]

Practices

Members of the Brotherhood did not see a distinction between the Light side of the Force and the Dark side of the Force and believed that the Force as a whole could be used for good or ill.[2] They had the ability to use the Force to make others see them as something other than what they were, and members of the group could be identified by the skull masks they wore.[3]
