"Ever since my accident, Fern always assumed I could do anything she could. Like I'm not different."
"'Okay. That sounds good."
"'But I am different.
"
―KB and Wim[5]

KB was a female human youngling who lived on At Attin[1] with her parents Garree and Maree[6] in the early years of the New Republic Era and was best friends with another child named Fern.[1] Around 9 ABY,[9] another child, Wim, found an old starship buried in the woods outside their city. After Wim, Fern, KB, and Wim's best friend Neel investigated the ship, they accidentally activated it and became lost in space.[1] The group of kids then forged an alliance with the ship's droid, SM-33, and a Force-sensitive man called Jod Na Nawood to find their way home and avoid a crew of pirates.[7]

KB relied on cybernetics after an accident.

KB was born around 1 BBY[2] as a child of the locked down planet At Attin. She was raised by her parents, Garree and Maree.[6] Sometime prior to 9 ABY,[9] KB had an accident, which caused her to need the aid of cybernetics, which were vulnerable to corrosion from moisture or cold temperature.[5]

Reckless duo

During the era of the New Republic,[1] around 9 ABY;[9] the human girl KB went to At Attin Middle School Gamma, along with her best friend Fern, using a hoverbike. The two took a shortcut and arrived earlier than the other students, though they were stopped by a safety droid. After school ended for the day, they went ahead to KB's home with their hoverbike, pulling dangerous stunts along the way. Unfortunately, their hoverbike broke down in the suburbs, forcing KB and Fern to walk for the rest of the trip.[1]

In her garage, KB inspected the hoverbike to see what was wrong with it, which she quickly found: a busted power converter. She told Fern to acquire a new one, and Fern replied that the component had already been taken by scrappers. Their conversation was cut short, however, as Bonjj Phalfa and their crew arrived to taunt the two about an upcoming race.[1]

A new discovery

"Maybe it's on autopilot."
"'Find a button that says "auto"."
―KB and Fern to Wim and Neel[1]

The next day, KB went with Fern to the woods based on a lead accidentally provided by another student, Wim, who claimed to have discovered a hidden Jedi temple. The two girls cleared the site up a bit more, which revealed a metal hatch. Before continuing further with their find, KB and Fern hid behind a giant rock as they scared Wim and his best friend Neel, using a voice modulator built into KB's cybernetic implant. The two girls then revealed themselves, being at odds with the two boys who claimed the site to be theirs. The four younglings then made a deal to open the hatch together.[1]

Together, they opened the hatch and entered through the tunnel. A few minutes after opening the hatch the foursome heard noises, and hid further inside the tunnel out of sight. They then started to explore the tunnel. Soon they came upon a lever with a powered off droid. Despite Fern advising against it, Neel pulled the lever, causing the hatch to close. Neel tried to pull it back up, but it would not work. KB observed that the power was off, and the lever needed power to operate. KB decided to follow the red wires to the power source. The rest of the group followed her deeper into the tunnel. After a while, they followed the wires to the power source. Wim split up with them, saying that he wanted to explore more. Meanwhile, KB used her cybernetic implant to plug into the system to try and get the power back.[1]

KB and her friends enter hyperspace due to autopilot being engaged, causing them to leave At Attin.

However, Wim pressed a button, which caused the "Jedi temple" to shake. Fern told KB to go, and when they found Wim, he said he hadn’t touched anything. Fern told them to get to the hatch, KB pulled the lever on her way, and they made it to the entrance. They then noticed that the building was rising and realized they were actually in a starship. While trying to escape, Wim almost fell off the ship, and Fern, KB, and Neel grabbed hold of him and pulled him safely back inside. The ship began to take off, and the children rushed to find the cockpit. Soon they realized they were going through the Barrier, and they attempted to turn around. KB came to the conclusion it was on autopilot, which led them to begin searching for a button that said "auto." When KB looked outside she realized that they were no longer on At Attin, as she could see the stars. All of a sudden, the ship jumped to hyperspace, causing the children to scream.[1]

Leaving At Attin

While the group traveled through hyperspace, Fern asked Wim what he had done and called him an idiot. Shortly after, the ship exited hyperspace. KB remarked that if that had been hyperspace, they could be far away from At Attin. The kids attempted to turn the ship around and return to their homeworld, when they heard a voice. A droid approached them, calling out for his "captain." Once the droid realized he wasn't there, he attempted to bring the children to the airlock. KB began to think he was malfunctioning, while Fern claimed his captain was dead. The droid didn't believe her and tried to find him while the younglings tried to come up with a plan.[7]

When Neel asked Wim what they should do, Fern told him not to ask Wim for help, as he was the one who got them lost in the first place. KB agreed while Wim got angry with Fern. Shortly afterward, Fern asked the droid what his name was. The droid introduced himself as SM-33, and Fern claimed she murdered his previous captain, and that she was the new captain. SM-33 deemed this acceptable, and the kids formed the Skeleton Crew, while SM-33 helped Fern fly the ship.[7]

Going to Port Borgo

"Okay, enough moping. Let's figure out how to get home step by step"
"'Step one. Get out of the brig."
"'Okay. How are we gonna do that?
"
―KB and Fern[7]

Following an explanation of each of the cockpits buttons, from SM-33, KB remarked that they all made sense. Wim then asked what the last button, the SM-33 hadn't explained, did. SM-33 yelled at Wim saying that it was the emergency hull demolition sequencer. He called Wim a fool and told him to never, ever touch it. Wim then asked to pilot the ship which all of the other children objected to.

Afterward, SM-33 suggested they fix the critical systems, claiming he knew a safe starport they could go to. Fern told him to get them back home instead. SM-33 asked where their home was, and Fern said At-Attin. However, he said he didn't remember an At Attin so KB told him to search his memory bank's last location. Just then, a rat came out of SM-33's eye socket and Neel suggested that the rat ate SM-33's brain. After the children told SM-33 to take them to At Attin several more times, Neel said they were lost, and after an argument, Wim walked away. Fern then decided they should go to the starport to try to find directions to At Attin.[7]

The kids then arrived at Port Borgo, and as they hopped into a dingy, SM-33 told them to trust nobody. A small, furry alien ferryman then took them to the port. Afterward it asked for payment, so Wim gave him Old Republic credits, which he got excited over. While trying to find a place to ask for directions, KB remarked on the numerous presence of aliens. Fern told them to stick together, but despite that, they split up. KB noticed a red furry fuzzball with wings in a cage, alongside aquatic jellyfish-like creatures in glass spheres. Shortly afterward a small droid began approaching her, and she bumped into Fern while backing away. Before they could began searching for Wim and Neel, a woman called Melna had come up to them and asked if they were children. She pulled them to a sheltered area, asking who had brought them there, and telling them that Port Borgo was actually a shadowport full of pirates. KB and Fern looked at each other and Melna said she would get them to a transport. She asked if they had any money, but they said they already had a ship and just needed directions home. Melna asked what their homeworld was, and Fern told her they were from At Attin, though Melna didn't believe them.[7]

Melna led them away, trying to help them. But Fern claimed she was trying to kidnap them, and KB told Melna she was hurting her arm. Melna claimed they needed a better story than At Attin, as Fern claimed it was true, she called At Attin a lost planet of eternal treasure. Suddenly, the two girls noticed Wim and Neel being chased by pirates, Fern managed to stop the pirates by firing a blaster upwards, telling them to back off. As a pirate named Vane told her to put down the blaster as they just want Wim's credits. As the pirate took the blaster off Fern, SM-33 arrived, saying he would not leave without Fern, and Fern said she isn't leaving without KB and the boys, as the pirates attempted to blast SM-33, he began attacking them all, and the crew attempted to return to the ship.[7]

KB and her friends were captured by Brutus' pirates and taken to the brig.

KB and her friends were captured by Brutus' pirates and taken to the brig.

As they returned back to the dingy, Fern questioned SM-33 about why he brought the children to the shadowport, to which, he says they are pirates as well, Fern remarks that they are just kids. As Fern is speaking SM-33 was blasted by a pirate named Brutus. After the children were captured and imprisoned by the pirates, they began to plan how they would get out and return home, to At Attin. KB says they first needed to escape the brig, and when Fern asked how, Neel suggested they train the rat to get the key. This, however, proved unsuccessful. KB said that they also needed to find SM-33, and repair him, then they would need directions to At Attin. KB then points out that, since everyone thinks At Attin is a myth, finding their way home may be more difficult. After an argument between Fern and Wim, a man, which the group had previously not noticed in the cell with them, told them to stop fighting. The man told the children he wanted to help them, asking them to take him with them, as then he used The Force to grab the key, as the kids realized that the man was force-sensitive, he asked them to keep it a secret.[7]

Escaping Port Borgo

Fern: "Thirty-Three said to trust no one. This guy was in jail."
Wim: "So were we."
Neel: "Yeah, and he's got magic powers."
KB: "So that means we can trust him?"
―KB and Skeleton Crew[6]

As the man and the kids escaped the cell, they immediately begun attempting to escape, while trying not to get caught by the guards. KB, fearing she would get caught, waited, as Fern told her to come on, she said they would see her. The man, then, used the force to distract the guards so KB could get past. When asked how he did it, he claimed he had practice, telling them they needed to get to their ship, Fern suddenly said that they had never agreed to let him come with them. Wim and Neel, in response to this, told Fern he was helping them, however, KB questioned why he needed their help if he could have escaped at any time. The man replied that there was no use without a ship and, after a discussion, he revealed himself as Jod Na Nawood. He told the children to follow him, as the guards were coming. Wim then realized that Jod could sense the guards with the Force.[6]

When Jod left, having told the children to wait for him, Fern told them that SM-33 had said to trust nobody, reminding them that he had been in jail, Wim told her that they has also been in jail. Neel further mentioned Jod had the Force. Shortly after, KB asked if that meant they could trust him, and Wim began saying that the Jedi were the defenders of the galaxy and the keepers of peace. When Jod returned he told them which way was empty and which one was full of guards. Fern told him to go the empty way, and just as he said it was easier to hide in a crowd than an empty corridor, KB told them to hold as a droid passed by. Fern then joked that KB had the force too, to which Jod replied that the force flows through everyone.[6]

The group made their way to the dingy, and while on it, Fern remarked how easy their escape had been. Jod asked which ship was theirs, and as Wim tried to explain, Fern said that it was a wreck, and KB said it technically shouldn't fly. When they had arrived on the ship, back in the cockpit, Jod said he had an old friend they could visit, as she was an expert on star maps and lost planets. Neel then reminded them about SM-33, and when Jod asked who he was, KB explained that SM-33 was their droid, and he knew how to operate and repair their ship. Jod tried to say they would be fine without him; however, Fern said they needed him. Jod says he wouldn't go back for a droid; however, Fern said she thought the Jedi never left a man behind. When Jod tried to make an excuse, Fern said if he didn't go, then she would, which the other members of the crew, including KB, agreed with. Jod told them they would be captured again if they returned to the port. Finally, after much argument, Jod agreed to retrieve SM-33 and told the children to stay put. [6]

Mission to At Attin

Going to the Observatory Moon

"Are you okay?"
"'I'll be fine. But what are you going to do? Go with Jack?"
"'He got us this far. But I don't trust him. Not really.
"
―KB and Kh'ymm[6]

Fern told the group they should blast off before Jod returned, however, Wim was confused by this, and the group argued over whether or not Jod was trustworthy. Fern said that she and KB voted to leave him. KB reminded her that they were just children, saying they couldn't return to At Attin on their own. Suddenly, they noticed Jod returning with pirates after him. Jod told them they needed to go, and as they realized they were stuck on a fuel line, Jod tried to snap it. After a while, a cannon began trying to blast them, and Jod said he was going to activate the hyperdrive. KB said it might be too dangerous to go into hyperspace due to the fuel line being attached to them; however, the line broke and hit Port Borgo when they entered hyperspace.[6]

The children began to repower SM-33, who assumed Jod was an intruder. The kids told him Jod was a Jedi who could help them find At Attin. This caused SM-33 to repeat that he didn't remember At Attin. As Jod ate some food, he told the children that there was more, prompting the kids go to get some. After finishing their food, Neel questioned if there actually was treasure, thinking it was the Great Work. KB remarked that her parents were analysts, and Neel said his were as well. When Jod returned, he told them to get some sleep. While the others had gone to bed, Jod realized that KB was still up, and she said it was unlikely he was telling the truth and that he was probably not a Jedi. Jod accused her of not trusting him, but KB said she had calculated the odds, and Jod remarked that not everything could be calculated. Telling KB that she should get some rest as they would be reaching his friend's moon in a few hours. Afterwards, KB finally got some rest. [6]

KB and her friends followed Jod Na Nawood to the Observatory Moon to try get coordinates to At Attin from Kh'ymm.

KB and her friends followed Jod Na Nawood to the Observatory Moon to try get coordinates to At Attin from Kh'ymm.

As KB, along with the rest of the crew, arrived at the Observatory Moon, they quickly made their way outside, leaving SM-33 with the Onyx Cinder. KB remarked that the moon was cold, but Jod insisted she would warm up once they started walking. On the walk to Jod's mysterious friend KB questioned Jod about why they hadn't landed closer, who replied that the children needed the exercise. Fern, however, said it was to hide the ship. Jod then told Fern and KB that, while they were meeting with an old friend of his, he did not trust her completely, as he believed she might stab all five of them in the back. At the children's, including KB's, confusion, Jod simply stated that they would understand when they were older. When they arrived at the base, Jod knocked on the door, which was swiftly answered by an alien who Jod introduced as Kh'ymm. As Kh'ymm led the group inside, she referred to Jod as "Crimson Jack," once again confusing the children.[6]

Once they got inside, Jod greeted Kh'ymm, noticing that she had cleaned up the place a bit. Kh'ymm then commented on her collection to the children, saying she had trinkets and tokens from a thousand different worlds. Fern, talking to herself, remarked that she hadn't even known the galaxy had a thousand different worlds. Kh'ymm then told her that there were many more. Kh'ymm then flew closer to the group and asked why they were traveling with Jod, to which KB replied that he told them that Kh'ymm would be able to show them how to get home. Kh'ymm then said that she had maps of every star and Hyperspace route in the galaxy. When she asked where the children were from, Neel informed her that they were from At Attin. This reply caused Kh'ymm to fly off to another part of the room. Jod told her that Neel was telling the truth, and she remarked that At Attin was a very interesting astrogation problem. Kh'ymm then retrieved a scroll and flew back down to the children, telling them that their home had been purposely hidden from the galaxy at large and that there was no known map leading to the planet.[6]

Kh'ymm then explained that the scroll she had retrieved depicted the Jewels of the Old Republic, showing planets that had been hidden for their own protection. She went on to say that they had all been destroyed long ago, except for At Attin. While the planet had become mostly forgotten to time, it was now remembered only through children's stories, pirate shanties, and rumors that only fools believed in, though Kh'ymm also admitted that she had always believed in the planet. When Fern told Kh'ymm, again, that they needed a map, Jod remarked that the children were the map, which Kh'ymm agreed with. She then said they would search her archives by astronomical feature and that this way they would find their planet. When asked if the children knew of any nearby planets, KB remarked that they had learned about Coruscant and Alderaan in school. This prompted Kh'ymm to realize the children had missed the the war. As Neel talked about the Barrier, describing it to Kh'ymm, she told them that the list of potential planets had been narrowed down to ten thousand worlds. This prompted Fern to say that this method would never work, to which KB argued that they had already eliminated ninety-nine percent of potential planets.[6]

It was then that Kh'ymm noticed the patch on Fern's backpack and asked her what it symbolized, to which Fern explained that it meant she had been the head of the class at school and her mother had insisted she wear it. Kh'ymm scanned the patch, cross-referencing it with the Jewels of the Old Republic. When that failed, Kh'ymm stated that she had many parameters to run. Jod accused her of stalling, causing Kh'ymm to mention that Jod doesn't trust her. It was then that Jod noticed a radio, which had asked for updates on Crimson Jack.[6]

Kh'ymm stated that Jod wouldn't shoot her, not in front of the children. As the radio asked for updates on Crimson Jack, Jod told her to call the sector patrol squad off. Kh'ymm told the children that Crimson Jack was a scoundrel who only wanted At Attin's treasure. Telling the children that she had only called on the X-wings to help them before telling them to run. Kh'ymm began to attack Jod, saying the children couldn't trust him. Jod grabbed At Attin's coordinates and blasted the screen she had used to find them, and as the others ran, KB noticed Kh'ymm and asked her if she was alright, to which she said she would be. Kh'ymm then asked KB if she was going with Jod, to which KB said yes, as he had gotten them this far, though she didn't trust him fully. Kh'ymm told her to trust her gut and use her head to get to the truth. She also let KB know that she could call her if they ever needed help, and KB nodded before running away.[6]

KB had caught up with the group as they all ran to the ship. KB then said they weren't going anywhere until Jod told them the truth. As Jod tried to force KB onto the ship, she asked who he was, and Fern added on, asking why Kh'ymm had referred to him as Crimson Jack. Jod said he would tell them the whole story on the ship. Jod then tried once again to board the ship, causing KB to shove him backwards. This prompted Fern to call for SM-33. Fern then said that no one was going anywhere until Jod answered their question. As Jod tried to tell them they couldn't go anywhere without coordinates, KB walked off the ramp, waving her arms and calling for the X-wings using the voice modulator in her cybernetic implant. Jod stopped her and tried, once again, to board the Onyx Cinder and was blocked by the children. KB insisted that Jod tell them the truth right now. Jod finally relented and said he was lost, just like them. He also told them they could make a deal: they could form a partnership where he would help them return home, and in return he would receive a little reward. KB objected to this, saying that they wouldn't be partners and that Jod would work for them. Jod reluctantly agreed and joined the Skeleton Crew.[6]

After the group boarded the ship, they immediately took off and attempted to escape from the moon. KB asked what they were to do now, and Jod told her to get the hyperdrive ready. KB said she would get SM-33, to which Jod quickly objected, as he believed droids would always let you down. The X-wings continued pursuing Jod and the children. Having told Jod over the comm unit to surrender, Jod remarked that they would need to get to the other side of the moon to make the jump to hyperspace. Jod then ordered Neel to take the flight controls. As KB inserted the coordinates into the navicomputer, Jod led Wim and Fern to the laser cannons. When the ship was shot by the X-wings, Jod called for KB, who responded that they needed to go a little further. Jod then took back control of the ship, telling KB to alert him when they were able to jump to hyperspace; not long after, she informed him they were clear, and the Skeleton Crew jumped into hyperspace. [6]

Landing on At Achrann

"I wonder who this guy was."
"'Maybe he was the leader of this planet."
―KB and Wim[8]

The group exited hyperspace and seemed to have found At Attin. KB looked out the cockpit and noticed houses, and they begun to enter the planet's atmosphere. When they were locked into an autopilot landing sequence, SM-33 canceled it and landed the ship himself. once the ship was landed, the group got off the ship, wondering where everyone was. Suddenly, they heard an explosion in the distance, then Jod got off the ship and asked if this was At Attin, saying it reminded him of his homeworld, before Neel realized they weren't on At Attin. The group ran of, with Fern telling SM-33 to keep Jod on the ship until they returned. They reached a building, where KB told Fern that this wasn't safe, saying it was in danger of collapsing, with Fern responding telling them to watch where they stepped. Neel pointed out how a tree was way to big, meaning this wasn't At Attin. Wim then begun thinking they had fallen asleep for 100 years like in Tales of the Knights, before Fern told him that they weren't on At Attin. Wim told her it looked exactly like At Attin, to which KB agreed, but reminded them that Kh'ymm had said there were other hidden planets like theirs that were destroyed, thinking this was another planet co-founded with At Attin. Fern said that anyone that lived here may know about the planet.[8]

While walking through the planet, they realized there was a lot of smoke, and KB admitted getting directions home might be harder than she thought, thinking there had to be somebody on this planet. Abruptly, they heard something near them, and saw a statue with no head. Wim wondered who he was, with KB thinking he was the leader of the planet. Suddenly, the kids saw a blaster bolt get fired. KB stared at the statue, before getting pulled to cover by Fern. Moments later, somebody arrived asking them what flag they flew, with Fern telling them they did not fly a flag. Another person asked them who they were, and Fern asked them the same question, with them saying they were Troik. They then said that if Hattan got closer, they would kill them, asking them who they were again. Wim introduced himself, asking if they were an army of kids battling the adults for control, before Neel introduced himself, saying they just wanted directions home. Suddenly, an enemy patrol arrived, forcing the kids to hide. the older girl said they needed to slip away, taking them somewhere safe.[8]

The Troik took them to a school. When they entered, a Troik boy forced them on their knees, introducing them to General Strix, the leader of the Troik, and saying he was the true ruler of At Achrann, which revealed the name of the planet to the kids. The boy told Strix the names of KB and the others, and when Fern said she was Captain Fern, Strix asked if they were warriors. Neel said they were children, but Strix said that they treated their children as adults, hence, why his daughter, Hayna (the older Troik girl), saved the group, He said they were brave to wonder into Hatten zones, asking them what they sought. Fern responded with directions home, asking them if they knew At Attin, but they said that they did not concern themselves with offworlders, causing Wim to ask if they had any ancient maps or star charts. When Hayna reminded her father of the knowledge hidden in the Fallen Sanctum, Strix called her name, since she wasn't meant to talk about it. When Fern asked what it was, Hayna said there were old carvings, coordinates for other planets, thinking one of them might be their home. Fern asked if they could take them there, however, General Strix said they wouldn't survive the journey. He did say they each had potential however, telling them to train with the Troik to determine if they were ready to go to the Fallen Sanctum.[8]

The Troik forced KB and the Skeleton Crew to fight for them on At Achrann.

The Troik forced KB and the Skeleton Crew to fight for them on At Achrann.

KB and the others practiced blaster firing, while Neel and Hayna explored a bit. Wim acknowledged KB was good at blaster fire, giving her a high five. When they returned, KB and Fern wondered where they had been. When General Strix returned, saying the group would honor them by leading them into battle, Fern tried to get them out of the situation, but the Troik forced them to lead them into the battle. Wim said they needed to win the battle, but KB told him to drop his weapon as soon as the fight begun and follow Fern, before a soldier said that talking of desertion would get them shot. When Strix told them to go and scout ahead, and the Troik aimed blasters at them, KB asks Fern how they would run from it, with them pointing their blasters. Neel was hesitant to go, so Hayna said that she would go with them, saying she felt it was better to go with a friend when scared. The group heard a noise, and saw Jod ascending through the fog.[8]

The group sighed in relief, as SM-33 followed behind Jod, with Jod returning their eopies. Strix offered Jod a reward, and Jod requested for the children to be released, telling the Troik to let them go, with KB thanking him. Hayna said that they had proven that they were brave, and said she would take them to the Fallen Sanctum. On the way, Jod explained what happened; saying he gave them Wim's dataries for the eopies. Hayna stopped, showing them the Fallen Sanctum, and KB recognized it as their version of the Supervisor's Tower. After Neel talked with Hayna for a bit, they entered the Fallen Sanctum.[8]

The group entered the elevator, which KB got working, as Neel explained that it was the Supervisor's Tower on At Attin. When they reached the top of the tower, they noticed it was another ruin. Wim discovered coordinates to a planet called At Aytuu, then after searching for a bit, Neel found At Attin's coordinates. Once they realized that the coordinates had been destroyed, SM-33 explained that he had destroyed them when he was there with his old captain. Fern asked why he did it, and after SM-33 repeated that he didn't remember At Attin, she ran away, with KB attempting to repair his memory. During this, Wim talked with Fern, which caused her to ask SM-33 where At Attin was. After repeating the phrase "C-Can't say I remember no At Attin", KB asked her what she was doing. Fern responded that droids do what they are told, so he may have been ordered not to say anything about At Attin, stating that she used the same trick on her nanny droid back at her house. She then reminded SM-33 that she was his captain now, telling him to run memory override and remember At Attin.[8]

SM-33 said that he remembered At Attin and explained that, in the room, his captain had killed any of his crew that saw At Attin's coordinates, and ordered SM-33 to destroy the coordinates and forget everything he knew of the planet, then saying that if anyone ever came poking around looking for At Attin, to pull them apart, limb from limb. SM-33 moved to to hit KB, Fern and Wim, but Neel threw a stone at him to divert his attention. As SM-33 was about to attack Neel, Jod deactivated him. KB and the others called Neel brave for what he did, as Neel fainted due to the traumatic experience.[8]

Mission to Skull Ridge Mountain

"Someone has to sacrifice their life."
"'No, no, no, no You... You have a lot to learn about pirates. Tak Rennod was known for killing. He didn't think twice about taking a life."
―KB and Jod Na Nawood[10]

Back aboard their ship, Neel woke up and the kids tied SM-33 up. KB told the group that she had rerouted the memory chip so it would not overload his core processor. Neel, still terrified, reminded the group that he had been just about to tear them apart limb from limb, and Jod responded that it would be alright. Fern and Jod argued, then Fern instructed KB to switch SM-33 on. She activated him, then Fern asked him if he remembered where At Attin is. After Neel told Fern to make him promise he would not attack them, SM-33 said that he would not harm them, as those were his old captain's orders, calling him "Captain Rennod". Just as Fern was about to ask a question, Jod realized that his old captain was the famous Tak Rennod, and that the ship they were on was the Onyx Cinder and explained that Tak Rennod was the most infamous pirate the galaxy had ever known, explaining his backstory. However, Fern didn't care, asking SM-33 if he remembered where At Attin was, he replied that he didn't, but Tak Rennod had scanned At Attin's coordinates and hidden them in his lair beneath Skull Ridge Mountain. Afterwards, Fern said that it was perfect and told SM-33 to take them there.[10]

SM-33 explained how they had been on course for At Attin, when Tak Rennod had begun to suspect mutiny, and his first mate had gone mad with greed and challenged him. Next, his concubine had betrayed him, stabbing him with his own dagger. He explained that Tak Rennod had had the last laugh and locked out the ship's controls, as his crew had died crashing into At Attin. Jod listened, laughing, and Neel asked what a concubine was, before Jod said that is enough story time for now. As they approached Lanupa, SM-33 informed them that Tak Rennod's lair was hidden in the mountains, where none dared to go. However, KB noticed a ship and asked about it, to which SM-33 thought it was a cavalcade of fearsome bloodthirsty buccaneers. Jod, on the other hand, said that he thought it was a pleasure yacht. Fern thought that he had taken them to the wrong planet, however, SM-33 said that he recognized the planet, and Skull Ridge Mountain should be ahead. When a ship appeared, greeting them, Jod tried to lie and say they had a reservation. KB asked what a pleasure yacht was alongside the others asking questions, and the man replied that children were not allowed there. Jod tried to say that he and SM-33 would go and get the coordinates, but Fern said they were going, not fully trusting him, and SM-33 said that he went where his captain went. Jod replied that they could all go, but he would need every last Old Republic credit they had.[10]

KB and the kids adopted a disguise to appear like old people, to which, KB donned a brown cloak. As they were greeted at the mountain (which was now a hotel & spa) one of the guards told Jod that weapons were not allowed in the spa, taking his dagger of him. However, unknown to them, Jod used the Force to reclaim it. Following a tour of the spa, Fern thought that the lair was down in the mud baths, to which, KB said that she hoped not. Jod asked why there was so much security, so the woman explained that the Banking Clan was there for an economic summit and to enjoy the baths, so they were on high alert for spies and impostors. Jod gave the woman some Old Republic credits to upgrade them to their finest suites, when a bounty hunter called Pokkit recognized Jod as Dash Zentin. The kids wondered how many names he had, and after a short conversation, Pokkit told the kids to not trust him, and left.[10]

As the kids entered their suite, Jod explained that she was a ruthless bounty hunter with a grudge, however, KB and her friends were interested in the room. As Jod closed the windows, he explained that they needed to assume that somebody was after them, as SM-33 explained that the lair was in the Spa. Simultaneously, KB and the others had a pillow fight, and Jod angrily asked if they were listening to him. Fern tried to lie, but Jod became angry, explaining that murderous pirates were after them. KB asked why Pokkit hated him, before Jod said that they would split into two teams to search the Spa. KB, worried about corrosion from the steam, said that she couldn't venture down there, but lied that it was just gross. Jod said that she could take the Sensory Gymnasium, and after an argument over teams, also said that they would do it before the pirates came after them.[10]

KB ended up going with Jod and Neel. As they looked at carvings, KB noted that Tak Rennod's symbol did not look like any of them, telling the group to keep looking, but got smoke in her occipital link. The guards spotted them, so Jod told KB to cross-reference all of them, and as the guards arrived, KB and the other two ran. The guards called them Wise Elders, so KB said that they were kids, and as the guards tried to arrest them, she pulled something out, then unscrewed something, causing mud to splash all over the guards. Soon, SM-33 arrived, saying that Fern was in trouble in the grottos, and they went down to see a giant alien called Cthallops. As they explained what had happened on At Achrann, when they saw KB and the others, they introduced Cthallops, saying he would help them if they entertained him. Cthallops smashed the ground, revealing Tak Rennod's maze.[10]

As they entered, SM-33 said that there were booby-traps inside the maze and told the kids to follow him and watch where they step. However, Neel accidentally trod on one, causing lasers to nearly decapitate them. After making their way through the maze, they discovered the lair, albeit covered by acid. Jod said to search for a lever, however KB noticed words in Aurebesh that said, "All who enter paradise must make the greatest sacrifice", which KB thought meant life, before Jod said that they had a lot to learn about pirates. Jod explained that Tak Rennod didn't think twice about taking a life, and KB realized that life wasn't the greatest sacrifice to him; credits were. Jod threw a credit it in the acid, and after a minute, it emptied.[10]

KB went to Tak Rennod's Lair in order to get coordinates to At Attin.

KB went to Tak Rennod's Lair in order to get coordinates to At Attin.

As they entered the lair, the pirates found them and tried to blast them, so they closed the door. The group made it into Tak Rennod's lair, and SM-33 said that the coordinates would be in his datalog. As the group began to search, Neel called them over, noticing how all of the food on a table looked rotten, except a roast that seemed fresh from the cooker. Neel then nearly fell into a booby-trap because he stepped on a chair. Jod said that he would grab it, and upon lifting it up, they discovered Tak Rennod's log. Fern and Jod told SM-33 to access the dataport, and they found At Attin's coordinates. Jod instructed SM-33 to refill the chamber with acid, causing the pirates to die, and asked him to find out what the treasure was. He pulled up a hologram of Tak Rennod, as explained that it was the last Old Republic Mint.[10]

Wim asked Fern what a mint was, so Fern explained that it was where money was made. Fern then reminded Jod of the deal, but Jod told SM-33 that he wanted to challenge Fern for the rank of Captain. Jod told Fern to say that she yielded, but she instead attempted to fight Jod. However, he used the Force to block her attacks and threatened her with his dagger, and KB and Fern begun to cry. Wim attempted to save Fern with a lightsaber Tak Rennod had found but held it the wrong way up. The weapon flew across the room, forcing Fern to yield, and Jod told SM-33 to take them prisoner for mutinous intent against their captain. However, Wim saved the group by activating a trap door.[10]

Corrosion and Near-death

"Anyway, pretending I can run around on a freezing cold moon, through a bunch of steam, climb a cliff, after days without maintenance, that's just not reality, Fern."
"'So, then, just tell her that."
"'I can't do that.
"
"'Why not?"
"'Because... she doesn't have patience for that. You know how she is. And then... I'll have zero friends again.
"
―KB and Wim[5]

The kids fell through pipes, which took them outside in a snowy environment. Neel, noticing KB on the ground, walked up to her and asked if she was okay. As he called the others over to make sure she was alright, Fern told the group that her augs could sometimes go bad and she couldn't move. KB nodded, and Fern reset her occipital link. Not long after, KB noticed pirates flying away, and the group realized that X-wing starfighters were fighting them off, like the ones Kh'ymm had called. Wim realized that the people inside the starfighters were in fact the "good guys", and the kids tried to call for them. However, the pilots didn't notice them, prompting KB to say that it was to bad as she had the coordinates to At Attin and everything. When the kids heard this, they realized that they just needed to return to the Onyx Cinder and KB could take them home. Fern called it perfect, as the ship was still there, but KB told Fern that it wasn't perfect, saying it was impossible. KB walked off, and Fern ran after her, asking her if she was okay, to which KB nodded. Fern asked KB how they should climb the cliff, and KB said to consider other options. Fern, not knowing any other options, angered KB, and said she just assumed there weren't any, claiming if she was actually interested she would be listening for once. After a short argument, Wim found trash crabs and had an idea to follow them. Fern and Neel disagreed with his plan, while KB agreed to it, so KB set off with Wim, while Fern and Neel climbed the cliff.[5]

KB's occipital link began to corrode with steam, causing KB to nearly die.

KB's occipital link began to corrode with steam, causing KB to nearly die.

While walking, Wim asked KB if she went with him because she actually believed in the trash crabs or just because she was mad at Fern. Giving no response, KB sat down as the steam which got into her occipital link was preventing her from moving. Meanwhile, Wim had found a droid like SM-33, and asked KB if she thought he was okay, before noticing KB sitting down. KB told Wim she couldn't move, saying her augs were corroded, and told Wim to gather some droid servos as he may have been be able to fix it. Wim rushed to get some. When he returned, he asked if what he had found was enough, and KB replied that it was, showing him what to do. Wim did what KB had told him to do, and asked if she had done it before, to which she said that she sort of had, but not outside. Wim then asked if that was why she didn't want to climb, then realized it was. He said that she could have told Fern, and KB told Wim she wasn't exactly living in the real world herself sometimes. Wim agreed, but asked what she means, and KB told him that ever since her accident, Fern had assumed that KB could do anything she could, as if she wasn't different. Wim said that it sounded good, but she replied that she was different. KB then instructed Wim to pull out the resonator housing and remove the micro-fuse, which she clarified was a little metal cylinder. KB continued, telling Wim that pretending she could run around on a freezing cold moon through a bunch of steam, and climb a cliff after days without maintenance, wasn't reality. Wim said to tell tell that, but KB worried she couldn't do that because her friend didn't have the patience, so it would leave her with "zero friends again".[5]

Wim argued that it was stupid, as she could just be friends with him and Neel, and she smiled. Unwinding some lighter wires, Wim asked if it was enough, to which she replied it would have to be. She then said to melt the wires using a blowtorch, and created a mold, which she told Wim to pour the melted wires into. Once he did that, she told Wim to replace the micro-fuse. Wim said it didn't fit, so she told him to push it in. Once he managed to replace the micro-fuse, KB re-powered, saying that it was close. Wim asked "to what", and she responded with "total system shutdown", saying he probably thought it would have been more exciting to save somebody's life. KB thanks Wim, referring to him as "Jedi", and they began to follow the trash crabs again.[5]

Soon, they noticed a giant trash crab, and smaller ones surrounded the two kids. KB realized that they had brought them there to feed the giant trash crab. Wim grabs a walkie talkie and tried to contact Neel and Fern, when they saw that the Onyx Cinder was connected to three trash scouts coming towards them, with Fern and Neel on board. As the Onyx Cinder got lower, KB and Wim hopped onto one of the trash scouts, but the giant trash crab threw a rock at one of the trash scouts, causing the group to crash. Wim noticed that they were getting good at falling, and KB said to make it the last time. Fern rushed over to KB, asking her if she was okay, and she said she was, telling her that Wim had fixed her augs. Fern tried to apologize for leaving them, but Wim said that she was amazing, and how she got the ship. Fern then apologized for not listening, but KB in turn apologized for not telling her. The two both said that they were each other's best friend, before hugging, when they heard something in the distance.[5]

They found a scrapper barge approaching the Onyx Cinder, about to destroy it, and rushed towards the starship to save it. Fern asked if anyone knew how to start the ship, to which KB answered that she had watched SM-33 and Jod do it, and began pressing buttons. As the scrapper barge loomed closer, KB went to jump-start the engine, leaving Neel to fly the ship like he had done on the Observatory Moon. KB hit the engine and it began to start, before getting stuck, so Fern told KB to give them more power, offering one last surge. When she did so, the engine overheated, but luckily Fern had an idea to use the emergency hull demolition sequencer to remove the outer hull of the Onyx Cinder. Neel pointed out that SM-33 had said never to touch it, to which KB agreed. Fern pressed it anyway, removing the outer hull of the Onyx Cinder, KB stopped the engine from catching fire, and the group escaped Lanupa.[5]

Returning Home

"So that's what the Barrier looks like from the outside."
"'Whoa. No wonder no one ever went in there."
―KB and Neel[11]

In hyperspace on the way to At Attin, KB watched the ship's instruments, while Fern and Neel played with a slap ball. Once in the cockpit, KB informed them that they should arrive home soon, and Wim felt upset, as he knew that everything would go back to the way it had been once they reached At Attin, thinking that he should have never pushed the button in the first place. KB told him to not say that, as the group stated how fun the adventure was, and Fern telling Wim that she was glad he pushed that button. After a bit, the group arrived at At Attin's Barrier, with KB realizing how it looked from the outside. However, they became caught in a tractor beam which pulled the Onyx Cinder onto Brutus' frigate.[11]

Captured by Pirates

"KB, my sweet girl, don't give up. No matter what. We know you must be scared to go so long without maintenance. Get your friends... to help keep you dry. And you shouldn't have to many malfunctions. Get home safe to good, old At Attin, where you belong."
―Garree and Maree to KB[11]

Brutus told the group to come out of the Onyx Cinder unarmed, or else the pirates would come in. Before he could enter the ship however, the group grabbed him with a cargo riding claw, and KB used her voice modulator to force the pirates to stay away, telling them to release the tractor beam and they would let him go. Jod got close to Brutus, and KB saw him, then whispered his name in her normal voice. Jod then used the force to remove his handcuffs, and KB used her voice modulator to tell him to not come closer, saying it was their last warning; telling him to let them go, or they would kill Brutus. However, Jod blasted and murdered Brutus. Now in control of the pirates, he commanded Kona and Pax to capture the group and seize control of the Onyx Cinder.[11]

KB's parents, Garree and Maree, sent KB a transmission on how to return to At Attin.

KB's parents, Garree and Maree, sent KB a transmission on how to return to At Attin.

KB and her friends were taken hostage by Jod, with Jod trying to find out what allows the Onyx Cinder to get through At Attin unharmed, when a transmission came through. A hologram of Fern's mother, Fara, said that they had used a transmitter to send a message, and the hologram of Fara told Fern that she loves her, telling her daughter she wasn't in trouble. Next, KB's parents, Garree and Maree appeared, and told her not to give up no matter what, and that they knew that she must be scared going so long without maintenance. KB and her friends tried to get closer, only to be sopped by Pax. Fern said that they weren't trying to escape and only wanted to hear the message. On the hologram, Garree told KB to get her friends to help keep her dry, so that she shouldn't have too many malfunctions, telling KB to return to At Attin where she belongs. Neel's parents gave Neel some encouragement, then Fara said that they couldn't transmit any coordinates due to security procedures, but told the kids that they could get home, telling them to find a Republic Emissary. As Wim's father, Wendle appeared, he said that they were an official who knew the secret location of At Attin and how to get through its barrier, telling them to be careful as the barrier could be dangerous. He also told the kids to not tell anyone else where they were from, not knowing that they already had, and wished he could say more, saying he wasn't supposed to find out about any of this until graduation. Wendle apologized to Wim, before the hologram ended.[11]

The kids realized that they needed to take back the Onyx Cinder. They planned to trick Jod, knowing that he was greedy. Before Wim attempted to attack him, Kona grabbed Wim, saying that the Onyx Cinder was their ship as they had found it first, and Jod said it was his. SM-33 however said that the Onyx Cinder remained unattested since he was captain of the frigate, and a captain could only claim one vessel by the pirate code. As Wim attempted to claim it, Jod put his hand over his mouth, muffling his speech, then claimed it himself. However, Fern then called "unclaimsies" and claimed it only for kids, telling SM-33 to get the pirates off the Onyx Cinder. SM-33 punched Jod in the face and got them off the ship.[11]

Jod Na Nawood threatened KB and her friends with a lightsaber.

Jod Na Nawood threatened KB and her friends with a lightsaber.

The Onyx Cinder began to take off, and Fern instructed SM-33 to get them back to At Attin, which he said would be an honor. Pirates attempted to blast the ship down, and escaped the frigate, however, some fighters chased it. As they entered At Attin's barrier, it began to blow up the other fighters, and SM-33 revealed that the Onyx Cinder was actually an At Attin ship, enabling him to fly to the planet safely. They made it through the barrier to find At Attin, which KB said looked huge from up there. The ship locked into an autopilot landing sequence like on At Achrann, when suddenly, they noticed that Jod had sneaked onboard. SM-33 tried to stop him, but was sliced as Jod pulled out the lightsaber Wim had dropped in Tak Rennod's lair, then told the kids to get on the ground.[11]

Deactivating the lightsaber, Jod attempted to contact the frigate, however, KB noticed that the Barrier was jamming the signal, which Jod screamed that he knew. He attempts to fly the ship, and when Neel mentioned it was on autopilot, told him to shut up. Wim told Jod to leave him alone, and Jod asked them all to shut up, calling Wim the worst one, and them all weak and spoiled. He said that they would land, he would contact the frigate, and they wouldn't say a word about what was going on. Igniting the lightsaber and pointing it towards their necks, he added that if he got a hint any of them were thinking otherwise, he would cut their parents up piece by piece, slowly, before deactivating his lightsaber.[11]

Reunion at the Mint

KB returned to At Attin and reunited with Garree and Maree.

KB returned to At Attin and reunited with Garree and Maree.

As the Onyx Cinder landed on At Attin, the kids and Jod exited the ship, where a Safety Droid welcomed him. Thinking he was a Emissary, the droid said hello to the kids, but reminded them that travel outside the barrier was not permitted. The droid said that the planet-wide protocol required that any visiting Emissary had to go directly to the Mint to begin Offload procedures. However, Jod told the droid he needed to speak to his other ship, saying the comms had been jammed, and the droid said that they would proceed to the Mint, and that he would alert the group's parents. Jod said to hold them on his ship, and the children waited on the ship while Jod requested to talk with the Supervisor so he could get the frigate through the barrier. While Jod looked inside the vault, the group's parents came down on a lift, with the kids rushing to hug them. As KB embraced her parents, smiling, Jod appeared behind them, igniting his lightsaber.[11]

Maree, one of KB's moms, asked how they could thank him, and KB stared at Jod as he claimed that reuniting families was what he does. He told the parents he was called Jod Na Nawood, before deactivating his lightsaber and bowing. When Fara asked if they were in trouble, Jod replied that they were, and claimed that they had stolen a ship, breaking just about every security protocol, saying At Attin and its safety should be their top priority. Fara took full responsibility for their actions, and Jod said to take them home, asking the droids to keep an eye on them. As KB and her parents left for their home, Jod told Fern and her mother to go with him.[12]

Invasion of At Attin

"Did we win?"
―KB to her friends after waking up.[12]

After entering the Supervisor's Tower, Jod destroyed the Supervisor and made Fara disable the barrier, causing At Attin to be invaded by his pirates. KB watched as the frigate entered At Attin, and rushed to get her hoverbike and find Wim.[12]

Neel and KB traveled to Wim's house on their hoverbikes, and Wim ran over to the two, asking if they thought Fern was okay. KB responded that she didn't know, but realized that Jod had done something to the Supervisor. Neel said they needed to call for help, and Wim asked how they would do so, to which, Neel reminded them of how the X-wings had chased the pirates away on Lanupa, and KB reminded them that Kh'ymm knew them, so Neel said they should get to the Onyx Cinder, fly out of the Barrier, and call her for help. Wim got his hoverbike and followed KB and Neel. Unfortunately, Wendle followed behind Wim, telling him to come back, then caught up to the children with another hoverbike.[12]

Before Wendle had a chance to stop them, pirates exited the frigate on airspeeders. KB called her parents on a comlink, telling them to stay hidden as pirates were invading, but assured them that she was getting help. The citizens of At Attin were made slaves by the pirates, including KB's parents. Two airspeeders found KB alongside Wim, Neel and Wendle and they narrowly avoided being hit by their blasters. KB told the others they needed cover, and they headed for a giant cliff. KB instructed them to go full throttle, and all four of them made it over the cliff. Before long however, more airspeeders found them, and in need of cover, KB told the group to go into At Attin Middle School Gamma, which already had been blasted by pirates. Despite being called crazy by Neel, the group made it inside the building. However, as the pirates blasted the building, Neel's hoverbike was hit, knocking him off. KB, Wim and his dad stopped, but Neel assured them he was okay and told them to go without him, as the ship might need cover via walkie talkie. The group reached the Onyx Cinder and entered the cockpit. Wim and KB powered up the ship, but as KB attempted to launch, they realized the legs were stuck in docking clamps, with Wim telling KB they needed to restore power. KB asked how they would do that, and Wendle realized the power relays were routed through the Supervisor's Tower. Wendle and Wim left to restore power, while KB rebuilt SM-33. Once the power was restored, KB began to fly the Onyx Cinder.[12]

During the Invasion of At Attin, KB and SM-33 piloted the Onyx Cinder through the Barrier in order to get a message out to Kh'ymm, who contacted the New Republic.

During the Invasion of At Attin, KB and SM-33 piloted the Onyx Cinder through the Barrier in order to get a message out to Kh'ymm, who contacted the New Republic.

KB's parents asked how she was flying it through a comlink, to which, KB said she had help, with SM-33 asking KB to hold her head steady. The frigate attempted to blast the Onyx Cinder, but it was saved when Neel blasted the canons with a turbolaser. KB and SM-33 made it through the barrier and she contacted Kh'ymm, telling her about the invasion. Kh'ymm asked her if she had found her way back to At Attin, to which, KB replied yes, and sent her the coordinates, asking her to send some X-wings. Kh'ymm said she would contact the New Republic, they were the "greatest pirate busters in the galaxy". KB said it was good, but told Kh'ymm they would need to find a way through their Barrier, before the Onyx Cinder got blasted by the frigate. SM-33 attempted to take evasive maneuvers, while KB contacted Wim, saying she got a message through, but had been hit. Fern and Wim looked out the window of the Supervisor's Tower to see the Onyx Cinder going down. Garree, one of KB's moms, contacted her asking if she was alright, and she said she was fine, saying she would fix the damage, to which, Maree said she could fix anything. Due to her and SM-33's amazing flying, she was able to survive the crash, however, everyone thought KB had perished.[12]

KB's actions proved to be pivotal as Fern, Wim, and their parents managed to destroy the Barrier and Wendle managed rid Jod of Tak Rennod's lightsaber, which was grabbed by Wim, who made sure to hold it correctly and ignite it. The New Republic arrived, defeating the pirates and destroying the frigate. Wim, Fern and Neel ran to see if KB was okay, and see that the Onyx Cinder had crashed, with KB falling out of it landing on a massive pile of Old Republic credits. KB soon woke up and asked her friends if they had won the fight, to which, they say yes, and all hug each other. Next, SM-33 appeared, saying it is one of his better landings. The kids ran to not get crushed by the ship, while a CR90 corvette entered At Attin's atmosphere.[12]

KB without her cybernetic visor in front of her eyes

KB without her cybernetic visor in front of her eyes

KB was intelligent and, at times, quiet and thoughtful.[13] Having spent her early childhood with "zero friends" she was afraid to be vocal about her needs or limitations, even to her best friend Fern, due to her fear of being isolated again. This led to, on at least one occasion, KB putting her health at risk.[5] KB had a grey cybernetic implant on the back and right side of her head that connected to another, visor-like implant which she could manually raise and lower, which she kept in front of her eyes most of the time. She usually wore yellow fingerless gloves on both of her hands.[1]

Behind the scenes

KB first appeared in the Disney+ live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, portrayed by Kyriana Kratter.[14] She was first identified in a listing by German retailer Müller revealing the LEGO set 75374 The Onyx Cinder.[15] The design of KB was inspired by the character Lobot.[16]
