"Careful Wim. It's not one of your stories."
―Jod Na Nawood, to Wim[1]

A blue-bladed lightsaber with a golden hilt was amongst the treasure hoard of the infamous pirate Tak Rennod. It was stored in his lair beneath Skull Ridge Mountain on the planet Lanupa. The lightsaber was discovered by the Skeleton Crew in the year 9 ABY when they unearthed Rennod's vast collection of antiquities in their search for the coordinates to At Attin. The boy Wim attempted to wield the saber against Jod Na Nawood when the latter betrayed the crew, but swiftly lost control of the weapon when he accidentally ignited it upside down, causing it to clatter to the ground. Na Nawood soon after used the Force to call the saber to his hand, claiming the weapon for his own. He later used it to disable SM-33 and hold the Skeleton Crew hostage during the invasion of At Attin, but subsequently lost the blade to Wim, who was finally able to wield it properly.

Description

The lightsaber was a single-blade saber with a[1] kyber crystal[4] that produced a[1] blue[5] blade. Its cylindrical hilt was silver with golden features.[1]

History

Wim fails to wield the lightsaber against Jod Na Nawood.

Sometime before 9 ABY,[2] the lightsaber was left in pirate Captain Tak Rennod's lair upon a pedestal.[1] Around 9 ABY,[2] the pirate Jod Na Nawood; the children Fern, KB, Neel, and Wim; and droid and second-mate to Fern—captain of the Onyx CinderSM-33 discovered the lair to locate the Galactic coordinates for the planet At Attin.[1] While searching for a dataport to access the coordinates, Wim[1]—a fan of Jedi stories[7]—was awestruck upon discovering the lightsaber. After the group found the dataport and found out that At Attin was an Old Republic Mint, Na Nawood challenged Fern for the captaincy of the Onyx Cinder per the Pirate's Code.[1]

As the children protested that the fight was unfair, Wim retrieved the lightsaber and[1] bravely[5] approached Na Nawood, clutching the weapon in hand. Na Nawood warned the child they were not in one of his Jedi stories. Wim ignited the lightsaber, though he held the hilt upside-down, causing the blade to hit the floor and[1] bounce out of his[5] hands. It tumbled along the ground before extinguishing. Then, Na Nawood finally convinced Fern to yield, becoming captain of the Onyx Cinder. The new captain ordered SM-33 to imprison the children, though they escaped through a trapdoor. After watching the children disappear, Na Nawood reached out to the lightsaber and used the Force to pull it to his hand, which he then ignited.[1] It was confiscated shortly after when Na Nawood was recaptured by his former crew, but he soon regained possession after murdering Captain Brutus. Na Nawood would later use the blade to decapitate SM-33, and hold the crew of the Onyx Cinder hostage.[6]

Wim took the lightsaber from Jod Na Nawood and ignited it the proper way.

During the invasion of At Attin, Na Nawood used the lightsaber to stab The Supervisor. Later, Wendle managed to knock the lightsaber from Na Nawood's hand and it was retrieved by Wim who struggled against Na Nawood for control of it with the help of Fern. After Fara lowered the Barrier, Na Nawood conceded ownership of the lightsaber to Wim who was finally able to ignite it the proper way.[8]

Behind the scenes

"When it comes to the one you see in Skeleton Crew, I took it upon myself to try and make one that sounds different. We aren’t sure where or when it's from, but the goal for this show was to make stuff that sounds unique, but also anchored and familiar."
―David W. Collins[9]

The lightsaber first appeared in "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates,"[1] the fifth episode of the first season of the Disney+ live-action series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,[10] which premiered on December 24, 2024.[11] Sound designer for Skywalker Sound David W. Collins created the sounds for the lightsaber. Collins had a personal goal to create a sound as "cool" as his hero Ben Burtt's original lightsaber sound, which the lightsaber gave him the opportunity to do. With the lightsaber's origin remaining a mystery, Collins created a different sound for the weapon to align with the show's goal of making unique things that are also familiar.[9]

Speaking with Variety following Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's finale, co-creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford were questioned as to why the lightsaber's blade does not turn red, in line with the depiction of bleeding in the previous show, Star Wars: The Acolyte. In response, Watts explained that Jod wouldn't be strong enough in the Force to affect the alignment of the kyber crystal, even if he had wanted to, and likened him to someone who claims to play the piano, but in reality learned one tune as a kid and can't play anything else.[12]

In addition, SWInsider "A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well. StarWars.com SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well. Therefore, the discovery of the lightsaber on the planet Lanupa happened around 9 ABY.
