Development

Variant cover artist E.M. Gist became part of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars 15th anniversary cover line when he asked to draw a cover of Cad Bane, which he was given the chance to if he drew three other covers for that what he learned was the 15th anniversary line. The second cover Gist drew gave him a chance to draw one of his other favorite Star Wars characters, Ahsoka Tano, which would serve as a variant cover for Doctor Aphra (2020) 36. Gist also managed to, in his words, "sneak" Morai onto the cover, marking her appearance on the cover her first appearance in comic media.[3] He also shared an unused sketch for his cover.[4]

  2. The events of Doctor Aphra (2020) 36 take place during the Star Wars: Dark Droids crossover event that StarWars.com Charles Soule Unleashes Dark Droids on StarWars.com (backup link) in turn places after Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters. Star Wars: Timelines dates War of the Bounty Hunters to 3 ABY. In addition, the flashbacks of Star Wars (2020) 50, which occur after the events of Star Wars (2020) 43 and thereby also after those of Dark Droids, take place approximately twenty-two years after Sheev Palpatine becoming Galactic Emperor, which Timelines dates to 19 BBY. Therefore Doctor Aphra (2020) 36 must be set around 3 ABY.

Turns out these were all for a series of Clone Wars 15th anniversary variants, and the next one was another of my favorite characters, Ashoka Tano! I also managed to sneak in the unofficial first comic appearance of Morai.
