Behind the scenes
During widespread debates over the status of the Neel's species - before the reveal of them being Myykians - as potentially just being the Ortolans, Leland Chee shared an image on Instagram showcasing nine distinct species he labeled as being "elephantine." Among these included Canon-exclusive species such as the Onodones, the Pakiphantos, and the previously unidentified Andraven, as well as one Legends only pachydermoid, Trud and Bothel's species.[1]
In the comments of said post, he revealed he chooses to classify these species as "elephantine" rather than the previously utilized terms "pachyderm/pachydermoid" as that would also include species inspired by real-world animals such as rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses, while the former phrase simply encompasses species with elephant-like features such as trunks. He also stated that, despite being previously classified as both insectoid and mammalian (specifically anteater) inspired, the Kubaz would have been a worthy inclusion for his graphic as well, given their trunks.[1]
Additionally, within the aforementioned comment section, he responded to a comment about the Chevin Ephant Mon species, stating he had "waffled on it," though did not deny its status,[1] When later asked for clarification on the process of determining an elephantine, Chee stated "I’d rather not make a strict ruling either way. I don’t mind leaving room for a bit a subjectivity." and "Maybe today I rule out Hoover because of size. Maybe tomorrow I wouldn’t." though he did reiterate that possessing a trunk and being generally elephantine,[2] defined as "of or relating to an elephant" by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary,[5] were the primary factors in his decisions making. He also further revealed that no official entry for the term elephantine existed within the Holocron continuity database until after his initial Instagram post about the topic, with the term previously relegated simply to a key word.[2]
