Plot summary
Trapped in the catacombs of Vaale by Just Lucky and her crew, Doctor Aphra vows a painful revenge. Lucky, having secured the Rings of Vaale, justifies her betrayal as a simple act of survival. While Krrsantan tries to smash through the blocked entrance, Aphra's team searches for another way out, eventually escaping through a garbage chute into the city's labyrinthine sewers.
As they navigate the pulsing sewer walls, Doctor Okka reveals a stunning discovery: the city itself is a living organism. Its bone-like structure emits a "song"—a frequency that targets brain waves, inducing madness. The legendary insanity of Vaale wasn't caused by the rings, but by a rogue security system that grew, mutated, and now affects them. They escape to the surface just in time to see the entire ancient city obliterated by ships commanded by Domina Tagge. Aphra grimly notes, "Whatever Tagge can't have, he destroys."
Meanwhile, Lucky's crew celebrates their score, though the ring continues to emit a strange sound even in space. Their victory is short-lived. On Canto Bight, Tagge is displeased, noting they brought only one of the two rings and failed to capture Doctor Okka. He cuts their pay by a third and delivers a veiled threat against Lucky’s brother before dismissing them to the Canto Casino.
Amid the ruins of Vaale, Aphra's team finds a functioning High Republic ship. Aphra deduces that since Tagge only has one ring, the other must not have been in the city when it was destroyed. With a new plan in mind, she hails Tagge's fleet, provokes a chase, and allows her ship to be captured and boarded. As Tagge greets his new prisoners on Canto Bight, Aphra privately hopes her risky gambit pays off.
