FORTUNE AND FATE part 5 POWER PLAY
Doctor Aphra and her team are after the Rings of Vaale, mysterious ancient artifacts of untold power. There's just one tiny but
extremely dangerous detail—Ronen Tagge, scion of the infamous and insanely wealthy Tagge family, has his eye on the prize.

The race for the rings began on Dianth where Professor Okka discovered the fabled Ring of Fortune! But Okka's new protégé, Detta Yao,
betrayed Aphra's team! Aphra turned the tables on Detta only for Just Lucky to snatch the ring and deliver it to his real boss—Ronen!

Aphra's team narrowly escaped the complete obliteration of the ancient city long home to the rings. After stealing an old star-
ship and bringing the fight to Ronen, Aphra is determined to…be taken prisoner? It's all part of her plan. Probably…

Plot summary

Inside Ronen Tagge's Canto Bight penthouse, Doctor Aphra is stunned by his collection of rare artifacts. Tagge reveals his prize: the Ring of Vaale, now paired with its long-lost twin which his family has owned for generations. He explains that upon reading Professor Okka's research, he understood he possessed half of a legendary set and orchestrated the mission to unite them, intending to destroy both to create an epic ending for their saga.

Sensing an opportunity, Aphra taunts Ronen about living in his family's shadow, tempting him with the legends of the rings' power—eternal life and strength to rival the Emperor. She proposes a test: use the rings on Okka in his disintegration chamber. If Okka survives, the legends are true; if not, he still gets to destroy them. While Tagge agrees, the droid, TA-418 discreetly slices into a nearby terminal.

Okka survives the test, convincing Tagge of the rings' immense power. "If they could make me more powerful than the emperor, they will make me a God," he declares before snatching the rings back. At that moment, Aphra kicks Tagge into the disintegration chamber and begins manipulating the controls. As Tagge's soldiers storm the room, Aphra's crew provides cover. After a moment of hesitation, Okka presses the final button, triggering a massive explosion that rips through the penthouse.

The blast is broadcast as breaking news, prompting Just Lucky to abandon her brother at the casino and rush to the scene. She finds the penthouse in ruins and orders her crew to intercept Aphra's team, who are already making their escape. Surveying the damage, Lucky mutters, "This is going to be a hell of a thing to explain to Domina."

Aboard their ship, Aphra attempts to make amends with Okka by revealing she stole enough artifacts to restore Okka's tenure at the Shadow University. Okka reveals she has her own souvenirs: extensive scans of Vaale's catacombs and a valuable item she took from the penthouse. They both acknowledge they are now prime targets for the Tagge dynasty.

The story concludes with two developments: on Canto Bight, Lucky discovers Ronen Tagge is alive but severely injured. Meanwhile, aboard her flagship, a furious Domina Tagge receives the news, sets a course for Canto Bight, and issues a chilling command: "Bring me all of your information on Doctor Aphra."
