- "Stranger, it's best if you get what you're looking for, then leave. No good will come to my people—Nagai—from you being here. Only hurt, anger—pain. Death."
- ―Jesrit, to Luke Skywalker
Nagai was a sentient humanoid species hailed from the astronomical object Nagi. They had black hair, two red eyes, and pale white skin, along with pointy ears and unique face markings. The species was shown to be strong-willed and spoke in Galactic Basic Standard.
Biology and appearance
The Nagai were a sentient humanoid species with black hair, a pair of red eyes, and pale white skin. They also had distinct pointy ears and face markings unique to each member.[1]
Society and culture
- "In Garlev's name, we fight! For the Nagai, we fight!"
- ―Jesrit, upon rescuing other captured Nagai
Individuals of the Nagai species were shown to be brave and strong-willed, as they took opportunities to rescue one another and rebel for their freedom.[2][3] They were able communicate verbally with Galactic Basic Standard.[1]
History
- "The Zantarrk are manipulators—their leader, Gallana Venk, is a traitor to the Nagai and our ways. She's corrupted us. Taken our children. Our brothers and sisters."
- ―Marntiv, on the Zantarrk
By the time of the New Republic Era, the Nagai had forcibly been removed from their homeworld,[1] the astronomical object Nagi,[2] by outside forces—the Zantarrk Gang[4] and the Fenril Consortium[5]—to work in labor camps after the betrayal of the Nagai Gallana Venk, who led the Zantarrk and sold her allegiance to the Anzati Reyna Oskure and the consortium.[4]
Nagai in the galaxy
- "It's not that, Han. I'm not trying to sell these people—they're my people. I'm trying to save them."
- ―Garlev, to Han Solo
Displaced from their homeworld, the Nagai were forced to do labor work in various planets in the Fenril sector,[4] including Kaltrais[2] and Gadrilam.[1] At some point, in an attempt to get their freedom back, the Nagai started a rebellion against their oppressors. Amongst the rebellion was the Nagai Garlev, who worked multiple times with smugglers Han Solo and Lando Calrissian to smuggle his people to safety.[3] Over time, Garlev's bravery convinced other Nagai to follow along and fight for their freedom, including Marntiv[4] and Jesrit.[2]
Years later, around 6 ABY,[6] a Nagai pirate was confronted by the Jedi Luke Skywalker and New Republic pilot Rynn Zenat on a planet, following an ambush at the edge of the Fenril sector.[7] The pirate informed Skywalker of a Nagai smuggler Ibo Truddispal and his possession of a stolen Jedi artifact, the Crown of Verity, on Gadrilam. They added that Skywalker would then learn the truth about the Nagai and himself. To cover their trail, the Nagai committed suicide,[1] injuring Skywalker in the process.[7]
Behind the scenes
Nagai, albeit unidentified, was introduced to current Star Wars canon in the first issue of the 2025 iteration of the flagship comic book series Star Wars,[7] which was written by Alex Segura, illustrated by Phil Noto, and published by Marvel Comics on May 7 of that year.[8] The species was later identified as Nagai in the following issue of the same series also written by Segura.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the species first appeared in the ninety-first issue of Marvel Comics' 1977 iteration of the flagship Star Wars series, written by Mary Jo Duffy, illustrated by Tony Salmons, and published in 1984.[9]
