"Kreegyr's a separatist. Maya Pei's a neo-Republican. The Ghorman front. The Partisan alliance? Sectorists. Human cultists? Galaxy partitionists. They're lost!"
―Saw Gerrera rants to Luthen Rael[2]

Maya Pei was the leader of the Maya Pei Brigade during the time of the Galactic Empire. The collective had connections with the anti-Imperial network coordinated by the rebel agent Luthen Rael.

Biography

Notoriety

"Caleen gave us a list of every piece of gear that came through Ferrix. And I think we've already got a match to a targeting unit recovered from a safe house operated by a rebel cell associated with Maya Pei."
―Dedra Meero, in a meeting with the ISB Board[4]

During the time of the Galactic Empire, the neo-Republican Maya Pei[2] led the Maya Pei Brigade[1] which became a notable rebel faction[3] by 5 BBY.[5] The collective had connections with the rebel agent Luthen Rael, who coordinated an anti-Imperial network which stole and traded stolen Imperial technology.[4] Cassian Andor, who worked with the network, helped it provide supplies for Pei and her rebels.[1] One cell associated with Pei attained a targeting unit from Rael's network, keeping it in a safehouse. The Empire eventually found the safehouse, recovering the targeting unit.[4]

Pei's group was one of many that was disliked by Saw Gerrera,[2] the leader of the extremist rebel group known as the Partisans.[3] Gerrera derided Pei and other rebel leaders with conflicting beliefs to Rael during one of their trade meetings[2] in 5 BBY.[5] Around the same time, the Empire's Imperial Security Bureau apprehended Bix Caleen,[2] one of Rael's contacts on the planet Ferrix that sold him Imperial tech.[3] After interrogating Caleen, ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero gathered a list of Imperial gear that passed through Ferrix, which included the targeting unit that was identified as the one eventually recovered from the safe house associated with Pei.[4]

Rebels decimated

"I was trying to save her. We got ambushed. We lost six ships, forty fighters."
―Gerdis, to Cassian Andor[1]

In 4 BBY, Maya Pei and her rebels were ambushed, leading to the loss of around forty personnel and six starships. The rebel soldier Gerdis, who claimed to be second-in-command of the brigade, attempted to save Pei but failed, believing that she was dead thereafter. Sixteen survivors from Maya Pei's cell then became stranded on the jungle[1] moon[6] of Yavin 4 and another one took their remaining ship to go back for survivors. By that time, Cassian Andor and the rebel pilot Porko were using that same place as a meeting point for a separate mission. Porko became hostile to the new arrivals and was killed, while Andor was captured by them when he arrived with a stolen TIE Avenger prototype.[1]

Upon finding out what the rebel group was, Andor mentioned his connection to Pei, to no avail, and Gerdis and fellow rebel Bardi were in disagreement on whether Pei was still alive. The distrust among the group of survivors grew, with more arguing on whether Maya or anyone else would come back for them.[1] This led to infighting and the deaths of some of the soldiers, Andor escaping in the TIE Avenger during the chaos.[7]

Behind the scenes

Maya Pei was first mentioned in "Narkina 5,"[2] the eighth episode of the first season of Tony Gilroy's live-action Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor, which was released on October 26, 2022.[8]
