Plot summary
The rebel princess and her trusty droid
The episode opens with the aurora borealis shining on the skies of a snowy, mountainous landscape. The former Princess Crane rides on a speeder bike-sidecar with her astromech droid R9-TR2 ("Tor-Tu"), the last relic of her royal life. She chats with the Mon Calamari Admiral Basil Kiucee via holoprojector while Tor-Tu plays an upbeat tune. Crane tells the Admiral that they have made it to the coast. The Admiral cautions her against playing music and running her engines too loud during a mission. The Admiral advises the Princess to retreat if she senses any danger.
Crane doesn't want to be addressed as a Princess, saying that it reminds her of the kingdom she lost. Kiucee suggests that she get ride of Tor-Tu, prompting the droid to protest in Binary. Crane defends R9-TR2, saying that he is the only droid who can play the music she likes. She adds that she had him since he was a kid. Crane narrowly avoids plunging down a cliff.
The child survivor
From the cliff, Crane scouts a nearby village with her macrobinoculars. Seeing smoke, she deduces that the village had been recently attacked by the Galactic Empire. Tor-Tu senses a life sign reading. Despite Admiral Kiucee's protests, Crane decides to investigate the life-sign reading with Tor-Tu. Descending to the village with Tor-Tu, Crane is outraged by the destruction wrought by Imperial forces. This brings back memories of her and her mother's ordeal with the Empire.
Tracking down the life sign reading to a house, Crane and Tor-Tu find an origami paper crane on the wooden floor of the house. Under a trapdoor, the duo find a frightened Gigoran child, who has created several origami paper cranes. Crane manages to strike a conversation with the child by talking about the origami paper cranes, which she says reminds her of a legendary guardian bird from her childhood. She also introduces herself and Tor-Tu. The child introduces themself as Woopas. Crane reassures Woopas that they must have survived for a reason. Tor-Tu senses movement ouside and Crane decides they have to leave since it is no longer safe.
Outside the house, Crane and her companions encounter a snowtrooper patrol. She exchanges fire with them. Woopas distracts the snowtroopers by hurling snowball from a roof. Following a brief gun battle, the trio escape on Crane's speeder bike-side car. While traveling through the snowy wilderness, Crane sights a heavily modified sandcrawler which is equipped with machinery for mining subterranean coaxium veins under the planet's pole. Crane contacts Admiral Kiucee via holoprojector and relays the information. She tells Kiucee that the Empire was unaware of their base but was only here to exploit the planet's coaxium reserves for its starships.
Taking out the Empire
In Binary, Tor-Tu warns of danger. Several AT-AT walkers emerge from the snow and pursue Crane's speeder-side car. The walkers bring back memories of the Empire devastating Crane's homeworld during her childhood. In a flashback, Crane's mother tells her daughter to flee and tasks Tor-Tu with taking care of her. Crane also recalls X-wing starfighters in her flashback and wearing the Firebird on her hairband.
In the present, she tells Woopas that there is a reason they are still here. She decides to take on the Imperial walkers by herself. Tor-Tu tells her that he knows how to use thermal detonators. The astromech droid takes out one of the lumbering AT-AT walkers with a detonator. The second walker opens several extension arms in its hull and tosses out several seismic charges. Crane and her companions dodge the first wave of seismic charges but one of them hits the speeder bike side car, throwing the trio into the air.
Crane tells R9-TR2 to enter into "armor mode" and the droid transforms into an X-wing-like mech armor unit. After catching Woopas, she returns to take aim at the AT-AT walker. However, the cannon is disconnected. While Tor-Tu frantically tries to reconnect the plug, she dodges blaster fire. Woopas closes his eyes and uses the Force to guide the power plug into its socket. With the cannon reconnected, Crane uses Tor-Tu's X-wing mech unit to fire a rocket that destroys the modified sandcrawler.
Later, Crane flies in her starship, flanked by X-wings. Woopas sits beside her in the co-pilot seat while Tor-Tu plays some music. When Admiral Kiucee remarks about her choice of music, Crane explains that it reminds her about her lost Kingdom. Kiucee thanks her for saving the Gigoran child but says he is alone. Crane reassures Kiucee that Woopas is a tough boy. Kiucee says they had to abandon their rebel base on Joetz but credits Crane with denying the Empire a major source of hyperfuel. After Crane recalls that her laser cannon almost malfunctioned but suddenly fixed itself, she notices Woopas using the Force to levitate an origami crane, making her realize that the child is Force-sensitive, much to her pleasure. The group then enter hyperspace, in preparation to rejoin the Alliance fleet for their next clash with the Empire.
