Plot summary
Separate lives
The story opens with Yuko experiencing a flashback of his bear-shaped droid BILY carrying him to safety aboard a starship. His parents are inside the ship's cockpit as their starship comes under attack. In the present, Yuko awakes from his bed. Missing his parents, he runs into the living room and hugs BILY. BILY asks Yuko what is wrong and reassures the boy that it is his birthday today, having prepared a roast nuna dish. When Yuko asks if he can stay home today, BILY replies that he needs to go into town to sell on water. He promises to return with a present but BILY insists that he has to go to work.
Later in the streets of Mos Eisley, a purple-haired boy named Sola enters Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina. The bartender tells him that this is no place for children but Sola says that it is work-related. He brings out a hologram showing two humanoid figures and says that they are smugglers. The bartender remarks that Sola has gotten himself mixed up in something. When Sola asks the bartender if he knows the individuals in the hologram, the bartender says that he doesn't know and asks the boy what kind of trouble he has gotten himself into. Sola then runs out of the store and into the streets of Mos Eisley.
Crossing paths
Elsewhere in Mos Eisley, BILY sells a water canister to a group of Jawas. Sola visits a vendor selling toys and asks the vendor and BILY if he has seen the figures in the hologram, this time claiming they are parents. BILY is uncomfortable and walks away, wondering how the child knows something. Just then, Yuko arrives in a hoverbike, which he loses control and crashes into a stall owned by Jawas. As the Jawas react with anger and annoyance, BILY tells Yuko it is time to leave. Sola takes an interest in BILY, whom he believes is connected to a triangle droid shown in the hologram.
The two walk through the deserts of Tatooine while the planet's twin suns begin setting. BILY pulls a hoversled carrying their goods. When BILY suggests moving elsewhere since Yuko is unable to befriend the local children in Mos Eisley, Yuko climbs on top of BILY and says that he is fine anywhere as long as he is with BILY. Unknown to the two, they are being watched by Sola, using a pair of macrobinoculars.
Sola laughs and rides his speeder bike back to a starship parked at Mos Eisley. He shows the footage from his macrobinoculars to a female Twi'lek with orange skin. She is dismissive of Sola's find, saying that it is not what they are looking for. Sola says that the bear-shaped droid BILY resembles the pyramidical droid seen in a hologram. He believes the droid is custom. This pleases his leader Fox-Ear, a masked man who asks Sola if he has managed to track down their hideout. When Sola confirms that he has managed to track down their location and passes him a datachip, the masked leader is pleased and orders Riku and Gura to prepare to attack the hideout. Sola is shocked because he thought this was a recovery mission. Gura counters that they will teach their targets not to "steal" from the pirates.
Breaking ranks and the pirate attack
Sola begins doubting the company he keeps and rides towards BILY and Yuko's homestead on his speeder bike. Meanwhile, Yuko is enjoying a roast nuna and a jelly dessert for his birthday. Just then, Sola knocks on the door and warns them that pirates are coming to attack them. However, the other pirates arrive in their starship and begin bombarding the house. BILY lets Sola in and recognizes him as the boy he encountered in Mos Eisley. The pirates bombard the house, blasting a hole through the walls of the house.
Fox-Ear is initially not interested in Yuko and BILY but Gura recognizes this as the place. When Yuko demands to know what the pirates want, For-Ear replies that he has no business with Yuko and asks about his parents, saying that they took something from him that he desires. BILY explains that Yuko's parents are no longer with them because they got sick and died. However, Fox-Ear believes that BILY is hiding the treasure and threatens him and Yuko. Sola emerges out of hiding and rescues Yuko from Fox-Ear's clutches. The two flee, prompting the other pirates to shoot at the door. BILY tells to stop but the pirates instead shoot the droid. Fox-Ear intends to reprogram the droid and burn the house down but BILY speaks and offers to tell the pirates where the treasure is in return for sparing Yuko's life.
The rescue mission
Later, Sola awakes Yuko who is frightened. After seeing the pirate ship depart, a distraught Yuko weeps over the loss of his guardian and friend. Sola tells Yuko that BILY is just a droid but Yuko counters that BILY is his family. Yuko tries to leave on his hoverbike but Sola stops him. Realizing Sola's love for BILY, he decides to help the younger boy. Sola introduces himself to Yuko. They are accompanied by a small triangle droid. The trio ride on Sola's speeder bike, following BILY's signal. This leads them to a canyon where the pirate starship is parked.
After some discussion, the two decide to venture into a cave near the starship. Yuko, Sola and the triangle droid found that the tunnel leads to a circular tunnel, manned by hovering triangle droids similar to Yuko's droid companion. Below, a captive BILY leads Fox-Ear and the other pirates to a door. BILY claims there is not treasure, prompting an enraged Fox-Ear to shoot him. The pirate leader orders Gura, Riku and his red droid minions to search for Yujo. Meanwhile, Yuko, Sola and their triangle droid take a lift into the bottom of the mine.
Showdown
Their presence draws the attention of a Leviathan krayt dragon, which pursues them. The children run pass Gura and Riku, who recognize the kid. The two groups are pursued by the krayt dragon, which chases them towards the gate where Fox-Ear is. The krayt dragon then plunges down a deep abyss. Yuko and Sola find themselves in the midst of the pirates. When Yuko demands that Fox-Ear release BILY, the pirate leader reveals that he has reprogrammed the droid as an aggressive hooded figure, who advances on Yuko.
Fox-Ear offers to spare Yuko's life if he opens the door but Yuko doesn't know what he is talking about. Sola fights off the reprogrammed BILY with a metal stick. Yuko reluctantly opens the door using a hand recognition system on the access panel. Fox-Ear and his pirates enter the chamber while Yuko attempts to reason with the reprogrammed BILY, who fights Sola. Meanwhile, the pirates discover that the cave only contains a single credit chip. Fox-Ear reacts with rage. The group flee as the krayt dragon climbs out of the abyss.
The krayt dragon takes an interest in the pirates but shifts its attention to Yuko, BILY and Sola. As the pirates retreat, Yuko hurls a road with the triangle droid, which snares Fox-Ear's cloak. Gura and Riku attempt to free their master but the triangle droid unleashes a sonic beam. The krayt dragon turns its attention back to the pirates and drives them off the edge of a cliff into the abyss. After some struggle, Yuko manages to push BILY to the ground.
BILY awakes and reverts to his original programming, asking what happened. Yuko is relieved to see his droid guardian again and hugs him. BILY takes them to the empty treasure chamber and reveals that the treasures are hidden underneath. They take a trap door which leads to an underground sanctuary. The triangle droid activates a hologram recording of Yuko's parents spending time with Yuko as a baby, including feeding him. Yuko cries tears of joy while BILY wipes the dust of his parents' graves.
BILY tells Yuko that his parents were wonderful people who brought food and medical aid to the people of the Outer Rim Territories. He tells Yuko and Sola that Yuko's parents left their son a starship. The hologram stops playing. BILY reveals that the original plan was to give Yuko the starship once had grown up. Sola believes there is no place for him but Yuko encourages him to come along with them into the starship, telling him that he is now part of the family. Together with BILY, the two boys start up the starship with BILY teaching them how to fly the vehicle.
The trio fly the starship out of the underground sanctuary and canyon. Yuko thanks BILY for the best birthday ever as they fly the starship out of Tatooine and into space.
