Plot summary
Aboard Moff Ubrik Adelhard's Imperial Star Destroyer Scepter, Imperial Security Bureau Lieutenant and New Republic spy Kith Alaytia awakens imprisoned New Republic pilot Preeti Delmin in her cell. She hastily urges the pilot to flee from the cell so she can rescue her friends from a grave threat. Delmin takes off at a sprint to rescue her allies, whoever they may be.
The friends in danger are Delmin's partner, Rynn Zenat, along with Kes Dameron, Jarek Yeager, and Therisa Alern. The four were sent by Princess Leia Organa to investigate the actions of Adelhard in the Anoat sector before their capture. The four rebels lie unconscious after being overtaken in combat by Commander Bragh and a cloaked Inquisitor during a failed escape attempt. The Inquisitor and Bragh decide to put an end to the lives of the rebels. The dark figure ignites their double-bladed spinning lightsaber and approaches the defenseless captives, but they are interrupted by a commanding voice ordering them to back away. To the surprise of the Imperials and a disoriented Kes Dameron, the command comes from the Jedi Luke Skywalker.
Skywalker ignites his blade and engages in a duel with the Inquisitor. The dark sider taunts the muted Jedi, but Luke silences them with a powerful Force push, calling the Inquisitor an impostor. Skywalker realizes his opponent is not truly trained in the art of lightsaber combat and soon disarms them. He approaches his enemy to surmise their identity, when he hears the voice of Rynn Zenat warning him of an incoming attack from Commander Bragh. Before Luke can even react, Bragh is tagged from behind, incapacitating him. The rescuer is Delmin, who reunites with her love, both women thrilled their partner is alive. They share a kiss but are cut short by a near-miss blaster bolt.
The rebels rally and Delmin gives her stolen E-11 medium blaster rifle to Dameron to fight off the wave of stormtroopers. Soon, Yeager and Alern join the fight, throwing punches and kicks at the stormtroopers. Their opponents now defeated, Luke resumes his interrogation of the fake Inquisitor. She is Reyna Oskure, an Anzati mystic of the Acolytes of the Beyond. She belittles the Jedi for what she perceives as a lack of understanding about her or the Acolytes. She warns him that no one can stop the ambitions of Adelhard to reclaim the Empire after the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader.
Near the provisional capital of the nascent New Republic, Chandrila, Lando Calrissian flies aboard his Luxury 3000 space yacht Lady Luck when he receives a holo-call from Leia and Agent Calder Behrens, informing him that a key operative, who he correctly guesses is Luke, is engaged in the Anoat sector and may need assistance. This is especially true given increasing evidence that Adelhard's consolidation of power in the sector is greater than they once thought. Upon Leia's request, Lando sets off to lead some New Republic ships to take on the Moff and support their friends.
Back on the Scepter, the New Republic operatives bind Oskure. Luke orders the others to take her and Bragh to the docking bay, grab a ship, and get away. Despite the protests from Zenat and the taunts from Oskure, Luke intends to confront Adelhard. He runs through the ship until he reaches the chamber in which Adelhard awaits the Jedi.
On the strike team's way to the docking bay, they encounter significant Imperial resistance. They fight their way through, but Zenat does not feel right leaving Luke behind. They are soon jostled by a lurch in the ship, suggesting an attack on the vessel.
Luke approaches his powerful enemy. Adelhard sends in a large contingent of stormtroopers, which Luke fights through and eliminates. All the while, Adelhard taunts Luke with claims of his own might, but Luke remains calm and steady. Even so, another massive jolt in the ship knocks Luke over and he drops his lightsaber. Adelhard recovers better and furiously kicks Luke in the forearm and the side as he shouts about his plans for a new, stronger Empire and his disdain for the Force. Luke manages to reclaim his lightsaber and swiftly cuts the bridge Adelhard stands on. The Moff is too preoccupied with his speech that he does not realize the danger until too late.
With the New Republic forces bombarding the Star Destroyer, the strike team, no longer ushering Oskure and Bragh, run to a ship as time runs low. Zenat tries to buy as much time for Luke to join them as possible, but Lando urges them to hurry. Luke eventually makes it to the hangar and the rebels escape in their stolen ship. They thank Lando for his assistance, and Luke informs them of his interaction with Adelhard. Luke spared him, but his main takeaway is understanding the nature of their enemy and how dangerous he could be. Back on the Scepter, Adelhard recovers from his fall, seething in rage and vengeance. He starts to reconsider his disdain for the mystical, now open to embracing the darkness.
