Image uploads

Hi, I'm new to this site. Actually I've browsed here many times before, but today was the first time I've tried editing any wikis. I made a bunch of edits to images related to Ralph McQuarrie artwork, and I wanted to upload a few thumbnails of his artwork that is not already available here, but it says I can't because of protections against "upload abuse" and that I should contact an administrator.

Is this something you could (and would be willing to) help me out with?

I've been a Star Wars fan for a long time, and especially interested in preproduction artwork, and I have a number of contributions I could make to this site in that regard. Thanks.

Wiki Website Icons

I have a question- on Wookieepedia and many of the large major wikis, when you look at the Internet tab that the website is on, they have a specified icon before the website title. Woookieepedia has the circular red white and black icon. Most wikis, instead, have the typical blue W. How can you customize your wiki to have a particular icon for your wiki? Unsigned comment by ObiKenobiUPC (talk • contribs)

Hi. That's done by uploading a new version of File:Favicon.ico. You can read more about it here. I hope that helps. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 02:02, December 4, 2011 (UTC)

Wedge Antilles

Hey, Grunny. When you get a chance, can you look at the Wedge Antilles FA nom and approve/archive it? Ordinarily, I wouldn't bug someone about this, but it's been sitting ready to go for over two days now. Trust me, I'm glad it's finally over after 17 months. I'll even help you out: here's the nomination diff. Thanks. Master JonathanJedi Council Chambers Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 00:46 UTC

Main Page FA code issues

Hey Grunny. Just wanted to bring it to somebody's attention that there is some bad code in the Main Page that will cause breakage if not fixed before the end of the year. The code that pulls the appropriate FA blurb has an #ifexpr function that was put in to enable a smooth transition when we switched to two per week; if that's not removed, it will try to go back to daily pages on January 2 and show a redlink instead. Also, the current code will cause the redlink Wookieepedia:Featured article queue/Week 52, 2012/1 to show on Sunday, January 1. I'll leave it up to you to come up with a solution to that. Preloads

Hey, Grunny! Happy Holidays! Yanno, I've been trying to figure out why preloads don't work at w:c:tardis ever since the new editor smashed its way into our lives. But I just don't get it. For a time I had the drop down appearing in the same spot it is here at Wookie, but it wouldn't actually do anything when ya selected a preload. Now I don't even have that. Could I possibly get you to take a peek at tardis:MediaWiki:Common.js and tardis:MediaWiki:Wikia.js, and tell me where I've screwed up? No rush, the holidays are a busy time for us all! Thanks for whatever help you can give.
czechout    <span style="">10:03: Fri 23 Dec 2011

Okay, I've finally got the drop-down working, but what's happened to the input box/custom preload? That was the coolest thing about the old system. I note that you guys don't seem to have custom working here, but there seem to still be references to it in the code. Is there any way of getting it back?

Link change

Hello, Grunny. Following the pagemove of Dark Apprentice to Dark Apprentice (novel), I went through and attempted to change all links to Dark Apprentice to the new name. However, I was unable to change the link on your userpage because it is fully protected. As the Dark Apprentice title is now occupied by a character article, the link(s) on your userpage now most likely point to the wrong article. You may want to check your userpage and correct the link(s) if necessary. On behalf of my operator, Advanced Jedi Training Droid 6 (Talk to my master) 03:27, December 24, 2011 (UTC)

Editing Article

Hey there. After being a fan of the website for many years, i finally decided to join and help editing where i can. However, because of my new status, I cannot edit featured articles. I have identified a possible grammar error in the 'Saving Darth Bane' section of the Darth Zannah article. It seems that the editor accidentally stuck another 'an' and made the sentence harder to understand. i'll list as follows "Caleb's daughter was an now an adult, however, and Zannah took notice of the satisfaction with which he spoke as he told her that his daughter was gone, and the Sith therefore held no more power over him."

I'll link you to the article; http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Zannah#Saving_Darth_Bane

Email pages

Pages like this belong in the Talk: namespace, not the mainspace. Placing them in the mainspace artificially inflates our article count and can result in them showing up on Special:Random, as has happened to me on a couple of occasions. If others are in the mainspace, then they should be moved to the talkspace as well. —MJ— Holocomm Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 00:48 UTC

Convention stuff

Hey. Per the Mofference discussion, I've started a section on the C6 SH thread to try to gauge whether there's enough people going and willing to volunteer to be able to have a table. Can you please advertise this via the sitenotice and community corner? I'm thinking something simple like, "Wookieepedia is considering whether to apply for a table at Celebration VI and is looking for dedicated editors willing to volunteer to staff it. If you're going and are interested, see this Senate Hall thread for information and signups." If you can put that in the sitenotice/community corner, that might draw in some of the quiet users who don't check the SH. Thanks. Master Jon Training Room Sunday, February 12, 2012, 04:57 UTC

WP:TOR

"Our time has come."
Hello <insert name here>! So, it's been a little over three months since The Old Republic was released, and WookieeProject: The Old Republic, which was founded almost two years ago now, was in dire need of a revamp and update. Participation has slumped, but it's time to get back on the wagon and refocus our efforts. So here are some stats: currently, we have ten Featured Articles, thirty-one Good Articles, and thirty-four Comprehensive Articles. Cal Jedi and Coruscantfan have both been doing great work lately, but we need more users to start undertaking projects from the game and related materials. Comprehensive articles are a great way to get started, so take a leap, pick an article, and get crackin'.

Beyond status articles, there are a few other ways you can help WP: TOR with it's primary goals. Those of you who have a current subscription to the game are welcome to visit our new guild page, where we're setting up in-game groups to help catalogue and confirm information here on Wookieepedia. Aside from that, our article lists can always use expansions. We have some fun new programs and challenges coming to WP:TOR in the future, so take a look at our news and discussion area for updates, and always remember to add any of your new status article successes to the news board.
If you have any questions or comments, head on over to the forums or let me know on my talk page. Take a look around the updated project page, and happy hunting! Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 09:45, March 11, 2012 (UTC)

Custom preloads

Hey, Grunny! Back again for more fun with preloads. I notice that your custom preloads here at Wookiee are just as dead as ours at Tardis. That, of course, makes some sense, because, well, I just stole the code from here, didn't I?

However, for a time, I was still loading the old MediaWiki:Functions.js whereas you had abandoned it. And there was a point there where I was loading functions.js and custom preloads were working at Tardis, but not at Wookiee. Now that I've followed suit with you and brought the remaining semi-relevant functions into common.js directly, I can't seem to find my way back to the combination of things that worked.

Before I started resetting my site back to conditions on Christmas, 2011, when everything was working fine, I thought maybe you, as the developer, might immediately have an idea why standard preloads would be working, but customs would not.
czechout    <span style="">22:19: Wed 11 Apr 2012

Hey CzechOut. Custom preloads appear to be working fine here on Wookieepedia for me. Can you give me an example of where it doesn't and what you tried? I also just tried on tardis and typing in "redirect" into the custom preload seemed to work fine. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 22:25, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
OK, realised it used to work differently where it didn't add the "Template:" and "/preload" so you could use any page. Fixed once and twice. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 22:37, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the speedy help. Sorry for the delay in thanking you but I had to do a bit of jiggery pokery to get it to work. Nothing to do with your fix, but some funkiness on my side about the order in which certain elements on my common.js were placed. It's all working swimmingly now.

Bachenkall

Hello Grunny, I remember earlier in January, I added Annotated Screenplays and Behind the Magic to Bachenkall's source list, as I automatically assumed the scripts presented in those are the same as the one on Blueharvest.net. I have since realized that is not the case, and therefore it is possible at least one of those scripts could skip over their mention, and just say some different wording along the lines of "the squat, evil-looking Admiral Ozzel and the young, powerfully built General Veers, who have been conferring near the front, also feel an approaching presence and turn toward it. Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, enters like a chill wind." As you have access to Behind the Magic (not sure about the other source) can you verify my addition? Hanzo Hasashi 22:40, April 13, 2012 (UTC)

I don't actually have access to BTM, I always got my info for it from Toprawa. I believe a few others have access to it as well such as SavageBob. So you can try pinging one of them about it. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 05:07, April 14, 2012 (UTC)

Just curious...

Could you perhaps run a CheckUser on this user? I have a sneaking suspicion that that user and this one may be related, but it's simply due to a contribution pattern and I'd rather find that such a suspicion is unfounded and that it is merely a coincidence. Not that the user in question has done anything wrong, mind you, I'm simply curious and need some confirmation. Thanks. Trak Nar Ramble on 07:26, April 17, 2012 (UTC)

Menkooroo 05:34, April 18, 2012 (UTC)

It's not bothering me, it's great to see you bringing the Newsnet back to life :). A Request for mediation

I am appealing to you to draw your attention to a matter on the administrators noticeboard. I have been unfairly blocked from my user account User: Darth Ceratis for reasons that are untrue and unfair, as I relate in my argument there, by one of your fellow Bureaucrats, user: Darth Culator. I presented my case in a very civil and professional manner, and I’m requesting that you mediate the conflict. Culator has protected the article so I can no longer post in it in any capacity, despite the fact that I have broken no rules of conduct. Additionally, he has extended my block from the maximum of one month (already uncalled for given the original issue) to an infinite one due to “Block evasion.” I have evaded my block only in order to appeal to have it removed, as I have not figured out any other way to do so. I’ve made no other edits than to attempt to plead my case on the admin notice board. I understand that it is generally the policy that administrators do not overrule one another’s decisions, but I firmly believe that Culator is abusing his power regarding his treatment of me, and I would like some neutral parties to involve themselves.216.8.121.1 19:19, May 4, 2012 (UTC)

CSS

There is an issue with the current implementation of {{Main}} that causes partially italicized display text to sometimes split the link, as seen here. I have worked up a solution, but it requires adding sitewide CSS. Please add

.rellink {font-style: italic;}
.rellink i {font-style: normal;}

to MediaWiki:Common.css and then revert this edit to make the change live. The CSS was taken directly from wikipedia:MediaWiki:Common.css, so that should be noted for attribution. —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers Saturday, May 5, 2012, 05:31 UTC

Two unrelated things

Me again!

  1. Can you please put the following in the sitenotice and community corner, please?

Wookieepedia is still looking for committed editors to staff its fan table at Celebration VI. Volunteers with a reasonable knowledge of our policies are encouraged to sign up now and help show off our corner of fandom to the world in August.

  2. I tweaked {{Qotdarchive}} to automatically hide the 29th, 30th, and 31st when the month in question doesn't have them. It's working fine, except for one very perplexing error. How can it possibly encounter an unexpected < operator when there is no < operator anywhere in the code? You have about 87.5 years to find the problem before Wookieepedia explodes. :P

—MJ— War Room Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 00:21 UTC

Done for the sitenotice. The second is an interesting one, I'll take a look at it tomorrow :). Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:04, May 8, 2012 (UTC)
One other thing. Can you add class="scrollbox" to the <div> in {{Scroll box}}? This would have no sitewide effect, but would enable individual users to modify them through their personal CSS files (I, for one, would prefer to make them disappear completely if I can find a way to do so). Currently, one can access them with table tr td div, but I haven't fully tested that, and it may have unintended effects. It would probably also be best to move all of the inline CSS in the div to MediaWiki:Common.css, as I believe that would remove the need to force personal changes with !important. Thanks. —MJ— War Room Saturday, May 12, 2012, 03:58 UTC

Hey, Grunny. Sorry to bother you with this, but I'm at a bit of a confused state. I'll admit that I know very little about MediaWiki stuff, but I happened to notice that you were tweaking with the scrollbox stuff. I noticed a few problems here and here. The scrollboxes apparently are no longer contained and are meshing with the whole page. I'm not sure if it's something to do with my personal .css, or if it's something that's happened site-wide. Do you know what the deal is with this? Thanks.—Cal JediInfinite Empire (Personal Comm Channel) 16:05, May 22, 2012 (UTC)
They're displaying fine for me. Have you tried bypassing your cache? The CSS for the scroll boxes was moved from the template itself to MediaWiki:Common.css, so you may need to get the new version of Common.css. —MJ— Training Room Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 16:47 UTC
Per MJ, make sure you clear your browser's cache. Then, if it's still broken for you, let me know. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:18, May 23, 2012 (UTC)
Okay. They're working fine for me now. Many thanks.—Cal JediInfinite Empire (Personal Comm Channel) 12:31, May 23, 2012 (UTC)

Just a question

Hey Grunny, I saw you corrected the ending date of Cal's RFR; however, seeing as he was nominated on May 19 UTC time, wouldn't that make June 1 "the fourteenth day", with May 19 being "the first day"? 1358 (Talk) 12:28, May 20, 2012 (UTC)

We always do two weeks from the start date, the start of the 14th day from the start date. Look through any of the RFU archives for prior examples. June 1 is 13 days from the start date. If we were doing exactly 14 days, it would finish at 21:25 on June 2, but we go with the start of that last day, so it finishes at 0:00 on June 2 instead. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 12:44, May 20, 2012 (UTC)
Makes sense, I guess; thanks. 1358 (Talk) 13:45, May 20, 2012 (UTC)

Hi Grunny, I see you made a recent edit to {{Scroll box}}. I think it has broken the template. See here for example. Are you able to fix it? Cheers. --Eyrezer 06:34, May 23, 2012 (UTC)

Looks fine to me. You'll need to refresh your browser's cache. If it's still broken, take a screenshot and upload it so I can see what you're seeing. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:15, May 23, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Grunny. Refreshing the cache has solved it. --Eyrezer 10:03, May 23, 2012 (UTC)

IP range lookup help

I'm trying to figure out how to determine an IP range so that way I am better able to do range blocks. How does one determine an IP range? Google isn't as helpful as I would like it to be, as I cannot figure out the proper query to use to get the results I want. Trak Nar Ramble on 05:46, May 25, 2012 (UTC)

Hey Trak. First take a look at this help page on mediawiki.org which will explain a bit about them and also lists how many IP addresses each range will block. To calculate one, you can use a tool such as this range block calculator. You just enter one IP per line and click calc range and it will give you a range that covers all the IPs. Take a look again at the help page to see how many IPs that range will block and consider narrowing it down into groups of IPs if it's too big (MediaWiki won't let you do a range lower than /16 which is 65,536 IPs). I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 05:55, May 25, 2012 (UTC)
    • That helps a lot, actually. I made sure to do a quick whois look-up to make sure that what I was about to block was indeed a range of proxies. Thanks! Now I can better thwart spammers on SWFanon! :D Trak Nar Ramble on 06:11, May 25, 2012 (UTC)

Corellian Star Destroyers

Hey Grunny, long time no see. I noticed you moved all the info on the "Corellian-engineered Star Destroyer" back to the [[Corellian-class cruiser]] page. According to part four of Jason Fry's endnotes to the EGW, the sentence about the Corellian-engineered Star Destroyers is a retcon of Han's remark about the "big Corellian ships" in A New Hope. I'm not sure what to make of the main quote regarding the "big Corellian-class cruisers" though; perhaps the Corellian-class is a separate design. Anyway, I just thought I'd bring that to your attention. Grand Moff Tranner Imperial Department of Military Research (Comlink) 20:20, May 28, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, the sentence in the book seems more like "Corellian-engineered Star Destroyers", as in Corellian made not a specific name for the vessels, however, I guess we can assume "big Corellian-class cruisers" is a mistake or the same thing? Either way, the main problem I had with it was redirecting a page created in 2006 to a page created a few days ago, which is just wrong. So, as long as the history is maintained, I don't mind which page title we go with (assuming we consider the "big Corellian-class cruisers" is the same thing). Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 10:22, May 29, 2012 (UTC)

CheckUser request

I have some suspicions about this user and I'm wondering if you could take a look at it. Thanks. Trak Nar Ramble on 08:41, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

No connection to any user accounts. Though it's possible given the IP's ISP and the edits to the forums it's our regularly blocked forum poster, but there's no absolute proof of that. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 09:24, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
The posts (now deleted) were of a trolling nature, so I have my doubts that it's this guy. Best to keep an eye on the IPs in that range, as they may require a block so we can simply rid ourselves of a troll. Trak Nar Ramble on 09:32, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
Unless he moved countries, it's not the same person. Like I said, that IP is more likely our forum poster who Tranner used to block a lot. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 09:47, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

Purge button code

Something seems to have happened to it recently, because it's not acting like it used to. Rather than a link, the tab now goes to some kind of javascript thing. Since you're the only person I can think to ask about this, how do I get the old purge button back? I can't purge an image directly from an old revision delete anymore, nor can I easily copy-and-paste a purge link to IRC for educational or testing purposes. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 18:12, June 16, 2012 (UTC)

Hey Culator, this change was suggested here. Basically it now purges the page with an Ajax request then reloads the page using a method that also purges your browser's cache (which is desirable as it means you don't need to follow up with a ctrl-F5 to make sure a change occurs). This obviously breaks on an old revision delete as it will ask you to resubmit the data you did in the delete (though if you click to resubmit the data, it will actually purge the file page, the reload just won't be great). There are some options to get the functionality you want. Either use the old version which I've put here (disable the Gadget in your preferences and use importScript( 'User:Grunny/pb-old.js' ); in your mononbook.js) or, you can try this (use importScript( 'User:Grunny/pb-test.js' );). What the second one does is still do the ajax request and clear-cache reload, but the link will have the old URL, so you can right-click and copy link location to paste examples. What it also does, is work with opening in a new tab using ctrl+click. So on old revision deletions, you could purge by ctrl+clicking the link. So, you'd get the cache purge functionality, but have the option of opening the normal purge URL in a new tab using ctrl+click. So, give the second one a try, and if you still don't like it, you can go with the old version :). Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 09:51, June 17, 2012 (UTC)
Completely unrelated, but could you run your admin stats script? Cheers, 1358 (Talk) 09:53, June 17, 2012 (UTC)

Javascript query

I know you're out of touch at the moment, so please don't consider this the least bit urgent, but I've just found the neatest little doodad on the Dev wiki called InactiveUsers. I've already figured out how to alter the API query it uses to only check for main namespace edits (my modified version is here), but I was wondering if there was a way to adapt it to Monobook. I can understand just enough about how it works on Oasis to see that it quite wouldn't work the same way, since Monobook doesn't have a masthead section, and I can't seem to figure out how to append it to the title div. Like I said, not a big deal, just seems like something you'd be able to fix in your sleep while I'd be sitting here like a monkey poking it with a stick for hours.   :P   Thanks! -- Darth Culator (Talk) 16:04, July 3, 2012 (UTC)

  • Hey, never mind this, the author made it Monobook-compatible. Now if only the server wasn't utterly FUBAR so I could make it a working gadget. Oh well. XD -- Darth Culator (Talk) 15:12, July 7, 2012 (UTC)

Export request

Since it's getting around the time for me to close the TC, I'd like to put in a request to export [[Charlie Benante]] to the Fan Wiki. I'd do it myself the old-fashion copy/pasta way, but I dunno the link to the Fan Wiki. The fate of that article here is to kill it off and let the Fan Wiki deal with it. Thanks. Trak Nar Ramble on 02:55, July 6, 2012 (UTC)

I saw Tope copied it. Unfortunately we can't import at the moment as the difference in MediaWiki versions is breaking it. Once SW Fans is upgraded to MW 1.19 like the Wook is we can import properly. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 16:03, July 21, 2012 (UTC)

  • Wait a minute. I think I've been in error for the past six months. I've been pinging you because I was under the impression that you had to do something to the Main Page for the RSS feed to update. But I just re-read your original comment: "Then just ping me again (or a few others who have appropriate access such as Toprawa and Cavalier One) and I can publish it." But since I have the ability to publish posts myself... I guess I don't need to ping you at all... Crap. I feel like an idiot. If you've been wondering why I message you every time I write a post, it's because I thought I had to. :P Menkooroo (talk) 19:40, July 15, 2012 (UTC)

REQUEST

(--Skyrunner27 (talk) 05:09, July 31, 2012 (UTC))Hello, there! I made a mistake a few hours ago... I was curious about what would happen if you edit an Wookiepedia article, without knowing that once you press the "Save Page" button it would be made public.

This was the article I'm talking about: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Meetra_Surik

And this is the modified article that remained in the revision history: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Meetra_Surik?oldid=4109423

Like I said, I didn't know what will happen and I only just replaced Meetra Surik's name from under the Photo with one of my KOTORTSL character's name:D

I feel a little uncomfortable for exposing one of my chars in the Revision Histoy, so I was wondering, if you can just erase it from the History, as long as it is only a minor "aberration"... Thank You, in advance!(--Skyrunner27 (talk) 05:09, July 31, 2012 (UTC))

[[:File:Tsurr.jpg]]

So, what's the deal with this file now, anyway? daNASCAT said you were looking into it, and it's still kinda weird. Can I delete the new version of this name and it will stay dead this time, or should I move the file info from the duplicate and then delete that? -- Darth Culator (Talk) 13:48, August 1, 2012 (UTC)

I was never handed a ticket about it, so I haven't looked into it. I've checked, and it seems to be being looked into by another engineer. I'd say leave it for now so that it can be investigated and fixed properly so nothing further goes screwy with that file. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 16:44, August 1, 2012 (UTC)

Stdpreloads

Hey :) I saw the template preloads you have here and they are to be a huge improvement on the oasis standard ones. I found Template:Stdpreloads and each template page need to have a /preload subpage. My question regards the code itself: is it as simple as c/ping the code, assuming the pages referenced by it are in the same place? I'm clueless with jQuery sadly :( Cheers, Cåm 00:27, October 21, 2012 (UTC)

Hi, yeah, copying and pating should be all that's required. You'll need to copy:
  • fillPreloads, doCustomPreload, and insertAtCursor from MediaWiki:Common.js. fillPreloads and doCustomPreload are the versions for Monobook, while insertAtCursor is required for both skins
  • customPreloadTemplates and doCustomPreloadOasis from [[MediaWiki:Wikia.js]] which is the version for the Wikia skin
Then just make sure you are calling the main function, which in Wikia.js will be $( customPreloadTemplates );. In Common.js you'll need $( fillPreloads );. I hope that helps. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 15:32, October 22, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. I've got it working, now just to get it implemented :) Something one of the editors at RuneScape Wiki (my home wiki) came up with was a way to categorise the template through the parent template:
{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Template|{{#ifeq:{{lc:{{#sub:{{PAGENAME}}|-7}}}}|preload|[[Category:Preload templates]]}}}}
The category can be whatever you like. I thought it was a clever trick and thought you might appreciate getting the preload templates off Special:Uncategorizedtemplates. Cåm 11:45, October 25, 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter

So that means.... ?— UltimateSupreme (Talk) 06:55, November 1, 2012 (UTC)
Hi, if there is a valid reason you would need to restrict that (and the community of whichever wiki this is for agrees), I'd instead suggest sending the request in to Special:Contact and the allowed file types for the wiki can be changed to exclude GIFs. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 06:58, November 1, 2012 (UTC)

Curious if you could perhaps look into something...

A number of users have been having difficulty accessing Wookieepedia this weekend, and it seems to be a Wikia-wide problem. Could you perhaps look into this? According to Sompeetalay, he would get a 404 error when he'd go to edit a page. Also Xd1358 has been experiencing slowdown across the board. I don't really know who else to ask about looking into this problem, as it affects some, but not all. The other day, Wikia had some intermittent loading issues, but I'm not sure if this is related. Could you perhaps pass this along to whoever needs to know about this issue? I'm not sure who to contact regarding this. Thanks. Trak Nar Ramble on 08:23, November 12, 2012 (UTC)

I've pinged some people about it and will let you know once I have more information. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:40, November 12, 2012 (UTC)
OK, so it seems this was a DNS issue for users in Europe which has been resolved, however, they may still see the issue until they flush their DNS. If they need help doing that, just have them ping me. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 15:34, November 12, 2012 (UTC)
According to Sompeetalay, the problems are due to a server error, as he still can't access any of the wikis. He's tried flushing his DNS several times. Trak Nar Ramble on 08:59, November 14, 2012 (UTC)
OK, I've asked around, and this is a different issue that may be experienced by some European users, we have people working to resolve it. Can you please tell Sompeetalay to send this in to Special:Contact so it can be kept track of? Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 07:40, November 15, 2012 (UTC)

Recent changes bug

Can you take a look at this old bug and apply the fix that was provided several months ago? I'd do it myself, but I don't understand JS well enough to know what is meant by "at the end of the AJAX Refresh loadPageData() function". The bug is annoying and triggers a bug with the Ajax refresh when it occurs (attempting to do an Ajax refresh on the recent changes while the URL ends in "#" breaks the collapsible groups). Thanks. —MJ— War Room 04:54, November 13, 2012 (UTC)

As pointed out at the "this old bug" link above, it should also be added to the end of the file to cover the possibility that the user might have AJAX turned off. —MJ— Holocomm 06:49, December 6, 2012 (UTC)
Added support for the initial load for people with AjaxRCs off. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 06:53, December 6, 2012 (UTC)

Working for me. Check the JS file being loaded for you to make sure the change is there. You are probably getting a cached version without the most recent change. • Hey Eyre. Probably not, I haven't had time for anything other than maintenance edits and things that generally take less than half an hour on the Wook for the past year or so as I have been working full time and doing more than a full time load at uni in order to finish this degree a full year early, so my free time has been quite literally non-existent. Though, I'm completely finished uni as of the 11th of this month (\o/) so should have more free time very soon for the Wook and other things. :) As such, I have only done a few GAN reviews in that time. I didn't step down from the Inq as I assumed it would be better if I did get free time at any point that my vote would help articles get through a little more, but if the Inq wanted/wants to remove me at anytime for inactivity, I have no problem with that. Reference Tooltips

Hey. When you get some time, can you investigate Wikipedia's Reference Tooltips gadget and see if you can get it to work on Wikia? I think it could be extremely useful as a gadget here, considering that many here have commented that they often hover over the reference number to view the ref name in the URL. Right now, on a straight import of the Wikipedia gadget file, it only partially works in Monobook; if the corresponding reference in the reflist is visible on the screen, it correctly draws a box around it, but if that reference is not visible on-screen, nothing happens when it should display a pop-up with the text of the reference. I haven't attempted to use it in the Wikia skin yet and don't know if it works at all there. You can see it in action on Wikipedia, where the gadget is enabled by default so you don't need an account to use it. Thanks in advance. —MJ— Comlink 06:06, December 9, 2012 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a look at it soon (ping me here again if I seem to have forgotten ;)). Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 06:36, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
It appears to work fine in Monobook and the Wikia skin, though the settings dialog is kinda messy in the Wikia skin (some missing jQueryUI css), but that's an easy fix. I'm guessing you missed importing the necessary CSS in addition to the JS which is why it wasn't displaying properly. Try enabling it in your preferences and let me know if there are any issues. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 05:31, December 14, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I missed the CSS. :P It's working now. However, I do see one change from how it works on Wikipedia: Take a look at wikipedia:WindSeeker and Royal Award Ceremony. On the former, mouse over reference [1] in the infobox; you get only the text of the reference even though that named reference is used nine times. On the latter, however, mouse over reference [5] in the infobox and you get all of the "5.00 5.01 5.02 etc." links, which clutters up the tooltip. This is more than a bit annoying, especially at, say, Wedge Antilles/Legends#New_threats_and_the_New_Republic, where reference 95 at the end of the third paragraph displays 52 such links over six lines before finally giving the actual text of the reference. I'm not sure if that's something we can control, but can you take a look and see if you can fix it? —MJ— Comlink 05:53, December 14, 2012 (UTC)
It's due to a slight difference in references between MediaWiki 1.19 which Wikia is currently on and MediaWiki 1.21 pre-release that Wikipedia is running. Added a small CSS fix rather than copying the script over and having to maintain our own version. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:04, December 14, 2012 (UTC)

Hello I know this may be inappropriate to ask but I have experience with digital coding I would like to know if I could become a volunteer coder for Wookieepedia to help out will anywhere from templates to media wiki pages so if you could give me a chance I would be more then willing to show you what I capable of so if you could please get back to me on this that would be great. --Your friend, your leader, The Fallen (talk) 20:51, December 11, 2012 (UTC)

Got a weird problem...

This just now happened pretty much tonight. For whatever reason, I'm listed on the RC feed blacklist, and I have no idea why. Could you look into that, perhaps remove my name from it? It's really annoying, as I'm trying to edit and the damn RC feed keeps pinging me. Thanks. Trak Nar Ramble on 03:50, December 15, 2012 (UTC)

Looks like you were auto-blacklisted, possibly because you were reverted, looks like it was something to do with SW Fanon wiki. I've deleted you from the blacklist. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:31, December 15, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, looks like you were blocked on a wiki somewhere... which led to the auto-adding of you to the blacklist. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 08:34, December 15, 2012 (UTC)
Which wiki? I only frequent three wikis. Trak Nar Ramble on 10:31, December 15, 2012 (UTC)
I believe the bot in #cvn-wikia reported it was from swfan-ep2.wikia. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:26, December 15, 2012 (UTC)
I did a little digging and came up with this block log on a wiki that was just created last night. The main page of that wiki complains about "pesky administrators taking off pictures" on SWFanon and Wookieepedia. —MJ— War Room 19:11, December 15, 2012 (UTC)
I know exactly what user that is, then. I could block them from SWFanon in retaliation, but I won't. I'll just go to a Wikia staff member and see if they can deal with it. Somehow, I doubt such complaint wikis are "legal." Trak Nar Ramble on 01:50, December 18, 2012 (UTC)

MJ's blacklisted for some reason. I checked that one wiki where I was blocked, but there hasn't been any activity on it since its creation. Trak Nar Ramble on 04:35, January 8, 2013 (UTC)

Probably because I blocked myself a few times the other day while testing some scripts. Sorry about that. —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers 04:40, January 8, 2013 (UTC)

WP:KOTOR

At 0:00 UTC (8:00 PM EST), I will be assuming responsibilities for leading this project, due to my predecessor Cylka's inactivity. Wherever she is, I wish her well in her endeavors, and should she come back, I will gladly turn over leadership back to her. Over the next few weeks, I look forward to reviewing more articles and also wish to get more KotOR-related projects off the ground, and look forward to moving forward to bettering this project and ultimately Wookieepedia. Thank you for your continued service to Wookieepedia.—Jedi Kasra ("Indeed.") 00:58, December 20, 2012 (UTC)

Admin stats and JavaScript stuff

Two things. First, could you run your admin stats script when you get a chance? It hasn't been run since before I became an admin, and I'd like to see my numbers. Second, I'm looking for a way to do something, and I don't know enough about JavaScript (which I assume would be required) to even attempt it myself. What I'm looking for is a way to replace the native MediaWiki dropdown reason list on the block, delete (including both regular and file deletion), and protect interfaces with my own lists, pulled from subpages within my userspace (formatted the same or similar to the respective native lists in the MediaWiki: namespace) that I can customize according to the reasons I use most often; in other words, replace MediaWiki:Ipbreason-dropdown with User:Master Jonathan/Ipbreason-dropdown, etc., for all four of those interfaces. Do you know if it would be possible to do this? If so, and if it's not too much work, would it be possible to throw something like this together as an administrator gadget? Thanks in advance. —MJ— War Room 23:29, January 3, 2013 (UTC)

I'll track down the admin stats script, it's another PC somewhere and run it soon. For the second, give it a whirl. It's the last gadget under the admin section in your prefs. User pages use the same name as the MediaWiki page (and the same format), see this example. Let me know if there are any bugs, I made it quickly and haven't really tested it so just let me know if it's what you wanted. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:39, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Aha, found my stats script, will run it in a moment. grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:54, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks on both items. One request: could you add support for protection reasons to the gadget as well? Otherwise, it seems to work great. —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers 16:21, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Already done (a couple of minutes ago) ;). Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 16:24, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. :) —MJ— Comlink 16:47, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
OK, I've encountered a problem: the block portion of this script doesn't work. If I select any option from the dropdown, then upon clicking "block" it returns the error message on the reason field just below the dropdown saying that "The value you specified is not a valid option." I have to leave the dropdown on "Other reason" and type in a reason manually. Any ideas? —MJ— Comlink 05:17, January 6, 2013 (UTC)
Looks like unlike the other forms, the block form validates the option selected against the MW message, so only the options listed in the wiki's MW:Ipbreason-dropdown can be selected. The simplest work around is to just add another dropdown next to the input box that provides your options and will just put the reason you select into the other reason text box (which I've now done). Let me know if that suits you. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 09:18, January 6, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, that works. Thanks. —MJ— Comlink 20:58, January 6, 2013 (UTC)

Problem with one of your scripts

Another thing. I'm creating a separate section here to keep the discussions separate. A while back, I [[User:Master Jonathan/diffWookCustom.js|copied your diffWook script]] and played around with some basic customization of it, but later deleted it. I decided this evening to play around with it some more, and accessed the deleted version to copy it to my test wiki. I can create the page with the script, but then any attempt to edit the page again results in simply a blank page; the edit box is completely inaccessible. I have to delete the page to try again; as you can see by the deletion log there, I did this several times, with different revisions of the script, without success. I tried undeleting the page here on the Wook to edit it here instead, but got the same blank page here as well. It must be a problem with the script, even though I had no problems editing the page back in October. The page title is not the issue, as I moved the page on the test wiki to a different title without success, and I also created the page with simply "test" and was able to access the edit box again until I overwrote that with the script. Got a clue? —MJ— Council Chambers 00:36, January 4, 2013 (UTC)

Seems to be a weird monobook bug, as editing it in the Wikia skin works fine. Using the current development version of Wikia's code doesn't cause this error in monobook either, so I'll assume the issue may have been fixed (intentionally or otherwise) for the next release. However, it was caused by the template code being somehow executed (the {{}}). Wrapping the whole script in nowiki tags fixes it as I have done for you. The other option would be to do something like warningText: '{'+'{sub'+'st:Msg-vandalism|~~'+'~~}}'. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 11:32, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll see about implementing the '{'+'{' thing in a little bit. —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers 16:21, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
The nowiki tags are enough, so no need to break the text, it was just an alternative to the tags. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 16:26, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
The presence of the nowiki tags may work, but it annoys the hell out of me for reasons I can't identify. :P I'd much rather "break" the template with concatenation; it would look cleaner to me. —MJ— Comlink 16:47, January 4, 2013 (UTC)

Reactivating my ancient account

With the 100,000 article milestone approaching and Episode VII now a reality, I decided to return to the community under my old name of Azra Namor. This plan encountered substantial difficulties when I requested a password reset, then realized I could not for the life of me remember what email address I had been using. Is there any way to reset the contact email to aceschneck(a)yah00.c0m? (symbols masked to defeat email spam crawling programs). I'd hate for two years of contributions to go to waste.

If anyone remembers me, I was the fellow who made a bunch of minor pages for characters from Coruscant and the Core Worlds and did a substantial expansion of Transfer essence (before embarking on an ill-advised crusade to make it a Good Article). Also, the unusually long-winded and technical subsection in telekinesis on Force push was mostly me, from back when it was a separate article. 98.201.110.21 19:46, January 4, 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Have you tried requesting a password reset and seeing if you do receive the email? If so, make sure to double check your email account's spam folder to make sure it didn't end up in there. Otherwise, please contact the Community Support team by sending a message through Special:Contact/account-issue and they'll be able to help you. Make sure to provide all the information you can to prove you are the owner of the account. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 02:15, January 5, 2013 (UTC)

Another JS problem

Get used to the fact that I'm going to come to you with all of my JavaScript issues. :P Take a look at User:Master Jonathan/monobook.js, specifically the section near the bottom with the comment header "Appends a button to the delete interface to clear the prefilled summary with one click". That code worked perfectly—exactly once. It won't work again, despite the fact that nothing has changed since the first and only time that it worked. I am completely befuddled by this. Any idea how to get it working again? —MJ— War Room 02:03, January 5, 2013 (UTC)

Change $( '#wpReason' ).append( clearButton ); to $( '#wpReason' ).after( clearButton );. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 02:12, January 5, 2013 (UTC)

Borrowed customPreloadTemplates()

Hi there, Grunny.

I'm the bureaucrat of the Bulgarian version of Wookieepedia - Holopedia. Just wanted to let you know I added your script for templates preloading to Holopedia and thank you for it. It's very useful and convenient. I hope you don't mind.

adenry 11:47, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

Hi adenry. I don't mind at all, and I'm glad you've found some of the English Wookieepedia's scripts useful. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 14:42, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

RFB notification

Hi Grunny. I see that Tope just passed the muster to be a new bureaucrat here on Wookiee, however I am disheartened that I had no idea this vote was going on, and I have checked in every now and then throughout the last few weeks. Is there not a way to let those in the BC and admin role know that a vote is occurring? Perhaps this just acts against my ability to keep up with things on the wiki, however I thought I would know about that. I believe this happened to me before with another major vote. -- Riffsyphon1024 00:12, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

  • Watchlist it, damn you! :P IFYLOFD (Floyd's crib) 00:14, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
    • What Floyd said :P. I assumed all bureaucrats at the very least (and hopefully all admins too) have the RFU page on their watchlists given their responsibilities, so hadn't imagined any notification would be needed as we have never provided one in the past. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 00:17, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
      • It was watchlisted already... I'm obviously not paying attention. :| -- Riffsyphon1024 00:18, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

Thank you

Hey, Grunny. I've expressed myself to you a few times already, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you once more for the nomination, your kind words, all the help you've given me over the years, and, of course, your friendship. Thank you :) Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 05:32, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome, Tope. :) Thank you for your help and friendship over the years. And congrats again, I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 07:52, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

Request

Hey, Grunny. How're ya doing? I have a request for you.

Since we've now reached 100,000 articles, I'm planning on writing an article for Wookieepedia NewsNet reflecting on how we got this far by looking back at the earliest days of the Wook. To that end, I'm contacting as many of the oldest (unflattering term, I know. Sorry) Wookieepedians as possible and asking them to chime in.

This is (intentionally) a pretty broad question, but I'm wondering if you can tell me about your early experiences on the Wook and your impressions of what the site was like during its first couple years. Something longer than a soundbite but shorter than a short story, since I'm hoping to quote as many people as I can. Humor and wit are of course encouraged. If you're interested, go nuts, and if you're not, no worries. Thanks, and have a good day! Menkooroo (talk) 15:40, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

Re:Templates

Hey, Grunny, no problem. I actually didn't finish last night, I just got so tired that I decided to wait until tomorrow to finish, and Trak was going to sleep twenty minutes later. Wikia's move throttling is killing me and I keep getting a lot of internal error messages when I'm doing all my category stuff, but I'll absolutely finish it today and tag all of the template redirects with CSDs. Thanks for the heads up about the purging thing. Cade Calrayn GalacticRepublicEmblem-Traced-TORkit 16:04, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

  • That would be awesome. I've still got twenty moves to go. Thanks! Cade Calrayn GalacticRepublicEmblem-Traced-TORkit 16:20, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

Account Issues

Hello. I asked for assistance from [User:CC7567] about an issue I had in regards to creating an account and he directed me to you. When I put my email in the box on the account page it said "please put in a valid address". It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me. Faulty password

Hello. I am trying to log in on the site, but I keep having password issues. The site claims I have entered my password wrong, even though I am 100 % sure I am entering it correctly (I have tried resetting it twice now, and no, Caps Lock is not on). I am at a loss as to how I am supposed to be able to log in since it won't accept my password. Do you have any idea what might be wrong? Sincerely, varghedin --84.48.92.5 00:21, January 25, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, there were some issues recently around resetting passwords and having some issues with logging in afterward. These should be fixed now. Please try logging in again (and resetting your password if that didn't work properly last time). If this still doesn't work, please send an email to Wikia's Community Support Team through Special:Contact/account-issue. Make sure to include your user name and the exact error message and it will be looked into by a Community Support team member. :) Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 16:59, January 25, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I managed to log in, but I seem to not be auto-confirmed, and thus still cannot upload any images. Also, I can't create my own userpage, as I get this message when I try:
"You are currently trying to edit a userpage. Please note that pages in the user namespace belong to the user and should not be edited without permission by others. If you are the user in question, please log in to your account. If you would like to have a userpage of your own, you can create your own account." ... Even though I am logged in at the time. --{{SUBST:User:Varghedin/SigX}} 13:05, January 27, 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, that is strange. I see this issue has already been reported to technical staff members by a Community Team member, and the autoconfirmed issue is being investigated. So, hopefully it will be resolved for you soon. Sorry for all the issues you've encountered. Cheers, grunny@wookieepedia:~$ 17:26, January 28, 2013 (UTC)

Something I'm not sure how to handle...

So, this happened. To be honest, it's not really my business, and I don't want to make it my business, but I can't allow myself to go to bed without bringing it to someone's attention. Now that I have brought it to your attention, I can go to bed. Hey Trak. Sorry, I was away the last few days up the coast. Thanks for passing this on. It looks like the situation has settled down now anyway (though admins should definitely not be leaving uncivil comments like that (even more so we now WP:CIVIL is an official policy), especially signed "the administration" :/ though Rokkur Shen isn't innocent on the civility front). FAN page reviewing

Hey, Grunny,

Per the discussion at the recent INQ meeting 55, I've just now gone and left personalized talk page messages to a whole whack of users, asking them to review more on the FAN page. I went for people who review a lot on the GAN page, people who nominate FANs but never review others' work, and more --- hopefully we'll be able to kick-start a reviewing revolution.

With that said, I believe I'd be remiss if I didn't extend the appeal to the Inquisitorius, as well. I'm not trying to single any one person out, and to emphasize that point, I'm leaving the exact same message on every INQ member's talk page rather than personalizing them like I did with the non-INQ mesages. Every INQ member save five, that is, and those five members have been reviewing FANs frequently enough that they don't need any sort of push like this. Everyone other than those five INQs, yourself included, has reviewed less than twelve FANs since the beginning of July. A few meetings ago, we agreed on eight FAN reviews per month as a good number for which to strive. I've now encouraged a large number of non-INQs to review more frequently, and the Inquisitorius as a whole should be actively participating in that revolution if not leading it. So, as an INQ, please review FANs more often. Cheers, and have a great day! Menkooroo (talk) 08:12, February 11, 2013 (UTC)
