An Imperial engineer officer was a human member of the Galactic Empire's[1] Engineering Corps[1] with the military rank of major.[2] In 4 BBY, the Imperial officer was one of a handful of Imperials personally requested by Director of Advanced Weapons Research Orson Callan Krennic to join the Ghorman project, an initiative by Krennic to extract vital kalkite from the surface of the planet Ghorman. Such a project would likely destabilize the planet's core, and as such, the population needed to be handled in methods created by the project.[1]
The first meeting in a secret installation in the Maltheen Divide included representatives from the Ministry of Enlightenment, the Imperial Security Bureau, the Imperial Navy, and the Science and Engineering Division. The engineer officer, among these members, responded to ISB Major Lio Partagaz's question on the process being invasive, stating that the extraction process would present difficult challenges to the local Ghorman population as the extent of the Imperial extraction would give stress to the planet's core and render it unstable. After a pause in official business, both the science major and Major Partagaz spoke further on the subject, with the science officer stating that the mining equipment was already warehoused and ready for transport. After Partagaz asked how long was needed to begin, the officer replied that the drilling was simple, as the operation could start in several weeks.[1]
The officer continued that it was the security and administration issues that were the issue with the project. Partagaz proclaimed that the Empire did not have a large enough presence on the planet, and the officer replied that Director Krennic already planned for that subject as the Empire would build a new armory on the city Palmo as a pretext for the larger Imperial presence.[1]
Behind the scenes
The officer debuted in "One Year Later," the premier episode of the second season of the live-action Disney+ television series Star Wars: Andor. The officer was portrayed by actor Tom Bonington, and the episode released on April 22, 2025.[1]

Star Wars: Andor — "One Year Later"
- ↑ Lucasfilm Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo confirmed that live-action productions treat rank insignia plaques of the Galactic Empire by two eras: pre–Death Star I destruction and post. The pre-destruction era utilizes the "single row" format for live-action media including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: Andor per
Pablo Hidalgo (@pabl0hidalgo) on Twitter (post on June 4, 2022): "@peacemakervitus There's basically two eras for Imperial badges - pre-Death Star destruction and post. So Andor and Kenobi follow the Rogue One 'single row' model." (original link is obsolete). Due to this, this individual's rank insignia plaque is consistent with its respective rank insignia and branch in the live-action production chart here, and as such must be that military rank and in that branch.
