"And it turns out, spiders are not the most unique thing in Ghorman. There's a mineral underground. Doctor?"
"Deep substrate foliated kalkite."
―Director Krennic and the science officer[1]

A science officer with the title of doctor was a human member of the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative, a secret research think tank for the Imperial Military. Involved with Project Celestial Power, in 4 BBY, the Science officer was one of a handful of Imperials personally requested by Director of Advanced Weapons Research Orson Callan Krennic to join the Ghorman project, an initiative by Krennic to extract vital kalkite from the surface of the planet Ghorman. Such a project would require gouge mining, a mining process that would likely destabilize the planet's core, and as such, the population needed to be handled in methods created by the project.[1]

Biography

"No notes. No records. None of you were here. Nobody puts this in their calendar. All service and transport droids will be data-wiped, once we're done. Your colleagues, superiors… if they're not in this room, they're not cleared for the project. Colonel Yularen, Governor Tarkin, all senior commanders will be notified by the Emperor, at the time of his choosing. Now, the group in this room is, of this moment, the tightest of closed circles. Any security violation will be brought to the Emperor's personal attention."
―Orson Krennic instructs discretion to Daysar and the other attendees at the Maltheen Divide conference[1]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the doctor served as a Science officer in the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative, a secret think tank part of the Imperial Security Bureau's Imperial Military Department of Advanced Weapons Research. As an employee of the Tarkin Initiative, the science officer was involved with Project Celestial Power, which discovered the need for the mineral Kalkite in the construction of the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station. As such, in 4 BBY, the doctor, along with several other science officers from the Tarkin Initiative, was one of a handful of Imperial officers who worked with Director Orson Krennic on the Ghorman project, an initiative by Krennic to increase Imperial control over the planet Ghorman in order to extract the need kalkite from it's surface, the mining of which was feared to destabilize the planet's core, and, as such, the planet's population needed to be handled in methods created by the project.[1]

That same year, the science officer, along with other members of the Ghorman project, was summoned by Krennic to a secret conference in the Maltheen Divide to discuss next steps for the removal of the Ghormans. There, the director explained the meeting's secrecy; there would be no records or notes, and any violation of security within the group would be brought to Palpatine's personal attention. Krennic then played to the room a Ghorman Holodocumentary that detailed information about the planet, such as its Ghorman twill industry. Soon after, Krennic revealed the Empire's need for the planet's kalkite to the attendees of the meeting, and called upon the science officer to describe that Kalkite. As such, the science officer then explained that Ghorman had a unique variant of kalkite found underground in substrate foliated deposits.[1]
