"Ten sectors were sealed away behind a barrier that prevents hyperspace jumps into the Exclusion Zone. Communications in and out of this region have failed, and the Nihil have begun to expand their presence in the Outer Rim. Wherever they rule, horrific brutality follows."
―Harli Cogra about the Occlusion Zone sectors, in Chronicles of the Jedi[5]

The Pelgrin sector was a sector in the Outer Rim Territories and the Trailing Sectors. The sector contained the Daslkehnt, Draay, Kasiol, Kinun Depot, Lessuris, Pagodon, Pelgrin, Perilious, Port Yonder, Rordak, and Sakuub systems.

During the High Republic Era, the sector fell within the Galactic Republic's Galactic Frontier exploration region. After being poisoned by Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro in 231 BBY, former Nihil Tempest Runner Pan Eyta found an unhygienic medic on the Pelgrin sector celestial body Port Yonder who equipped him with a ventilator in order to survive. The Pelgrin sector became part of the Occlusion Zone following its formation in 230 BBY as one of ten sectors sealed behind a barrier preventing hyperspace travel. In 228 BBY, the Stormwall's fall dissolved the Occlusion Zone.

During the Imperial Era, the smuggler Han Solo encountered an individual on Port Yonder who mentioned the trader Bralem Mopak selling members of the Hoojib species as animals on the planet Arbra. In 9 ABY, the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin visited the Pelgrin sector planet Pagodon and captured his bounty, a Mythrol known as "The Fledgling Mythrol." At some point no earlier than 35 ABY, Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts' Director of Creature Cartography, Ardis San Tekka, visited Pagodon to observe its native ravinak creatures.

Description

The Pelgrin sector was a space sector located in the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the Trailing Sectors regions of the galaxy[3] that bordered the Tolonda sector.[1] The Pagodon system was situated in the sector[4] and contained the icy planet Pagodon.[6] The terrestrial astronomical object Port Yonder[7] was positioned in the Pelgrin sector's Port Yonder system.[8] The sector also contained the Daslkenht, Draay, Kasiol, Kinun Depot, Lessuris, Pelgrin, Perilious, Rordak, and Sakuub systems. The Pelgrin sector's star systems were situated in grid squares R-17 and R-18 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[4]

History

Harli Cogra documented the formation of the Occlusion Zone, which included the Pelgrin sector, in Chronicles of the Jedi.

Harli Cogra documented the formation of the Occlusion Zone, which included the Pelgrin sector, in Chronicles of the Jedi.

During the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic designated a section of the Outer Rim—which included the Pelgrin sector—as the Galactic Frontier, locations considered removed far enough from the galaxy's center to send explorers there.[2] In 230 BBY, the Nihil marauder organization formed the Occlusion Zone—an area of space in the Outer Rim's Frontier that was situated behind the Stormwall barrier preventing hyperspace travel.[9]

As one of the ten sectors forming the boundary of the Occlusion Zone, the Pelgrin sector was cut off from the rest of Republic space,[1] and the worlds within it were forced to pay tributes to the Nihil.[10] Weeks afterward, in 229 BBY,[11] the Vurk Jedi Master Harli Cogra wrote a book titled Chronicles of the Jedi, which detailed the Jedi of the High Republic Era. In the book's afterword, Cogra lamented the formation of the Nihil's region and the ten sectors it affected.[2]

In 228 BBY,[12] the Nihil surrendered to the Republic following the Stormwall barrier's fall, which dissolved the Occlusion Zone as a territory. The worlds of the Occlusion Zone,[13] which included those in the Pelgrin sector,[1] were welcomed back into the Republic if they wished. However, some opted to retain their independence, while others remained under the control of individual Nihil warlords.[13]

Locations

"You're looking for ravinaks right?"
"It's clear right now, but be careful near the port. Everyone dumps their Gray Holds out. They think the whole entire planet is their personal stink pit."

After being poisoned by Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro[15] in 231 BBY,[16] Pan Eyta, former Nihil Tempest Runner, found an unhygienic medic on[15] the Pelgrin sector astronomical object[8] Port Yonder who equipped him with a ventilator in order to survive.[15] During the Imperial Era,[7] the smuggler[6] Han Solo encountered an individual on Port Yonder who mentioned the trader Bralem Mopak selling members of the Hoojib species as animals on[7] the planet[15] Arbra, which he later recounted to his associate,[7] the Wookiee Chewbacca,[6] between around 5 BBY and 0 BBY.[17]

The Pelgrin sector planet Pagodon[6] featured a breathable, Type I atmosphere,[18] a frigid climate, and icy terrain.[6] Ravinak creatures were native to Pagodon, residing in its icy waters.[14] By 9 ABY,[19] Pagodon was inhabited[6] by many species,[14] although travelers often made up most of the population.[6] That year,[19] the Mandalorian bounty hunter[14] Din Djarin[6] visited Pagodon to capture his bounty,[14] a Mythrol known as "The Fledgling Mythrol."[6] After detaining the Mythrol in the Ferryman's Reach settlement, Djarin departed toward his starship, the Razor Crest. Despite a brief entanglement with a ravinak, the bounty hunter managed to leave Pagodon with the Mythrol.[14] At some point no earlier than 35 ABY,[20] Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts' Director of Creature Cartography, Ardis San Tekka, and her safari droid, B8-T5, visited Pagodon and observed the ravinaks there. San Tekka sketched several illustrations of the creatures and included these in the entry on ravinaks within her journal.[21]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, prior to being retconned into other media,[6] the ten sectors forming the Occlusion Zone were first mentioned, albeit unidentified, in a flashback in the second issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Eye of the Storm comic-book miniseries. The issue was written by Charles Soule and released by Marvel Comics[22] on March 2, 2022,[23] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[24] The Pelgrin sector was later identified by name and specified to be one of the Occlusion Zone sectors via a map in the first issue of the 2023 comic series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. The issue was written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, and published by Dark Horse Comics[1] as part of Phase III on December 6, 2023.[25]

In the current canon, Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy placed Pagodon in the Pelgrin sector, thus making the sector's first appearance retroactively in The Mandalorian television series.

The 2024 reference book Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy placed the planet Pagodon in the Pelgrin sector.[6] Thus, retroactively, the sector—via Pagodon—first appeared in "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian,"[14] the first episode of the first season of the live-action Disney+ television series Star Wars: The Mandalorian, which aired on November 12, 2019.[26] It was first pictured during a panel at Celebration Chicago on April 14 of the same year.[27] During The Mandalorian's development, artists Doug Chiang and Nick Gindraux created concept art of Pagodon's landscape.[28]

The Pelgrin sector originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the StarWars.com Online Companion to the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry. The Online Companion placed the Perilious and Rordak systems in the sector,[29] thus retroactively establishing the illustration of the Rordak system planet Rordak in the 1991 West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game sourcebook Planets of the Galaxy, Volume One[30] and the appearance of the Perilious system[29] planet of the same name in the comic story "Dark Journey"—written by Jason Hall, illustrated by Ben Templesmith, and published by Dark Horse Comics in the seventeenth issue of the Star Wars Tales series[31] on October 1, 2003[32]—as the first visual depiction and first full appearance of the Pelgrin sector, respectively.[30][31]

  11. Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes that the in-universe book Chronicles of the Jedi was written weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 230 BBY. The issuing of the Guardian Protocols, dated by The High Republic Character Encyclopedia to 229 BBY, are depicted in The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 as taking place one week after Starlight Beacon's destruction. With this, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been authored no earlier than 229 BBY. Chronicles of the Jedi further establishes that Pra-Tre Veter is still a Grand Master of the Jedi Order, meaning it was written before his death, which The High Republic Character Encyclopedia states took place in 229 BBY. Therefore, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been written in 229 BBY.
